On Sesame Street's 40th Birthday Oscar the Grouch Talks About L.A.

Oscar the Grouch and Zoe from Sesame Street came to Los Angeles to tell everyone that Sesame Street is turning the big 4-0. This week the most famous street in the world is celebrating its birthday with the "Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days" DVD collection, commemorative book and an appearance by Michelle Obama on the anniversary episode.

George Hamilton to Get 2,388th Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Actor George Hamilton will celebrate his 70th birthday by having his Hollywood Walk of Fame star revealed this morning. He's been seen in The Godfather: Part III, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, Zorro, The Gay Blade, Lone Star and the Dracula spoof, Love at First Bite (Love at Second Bite is currently in development), among many other movies. Next week, My One and Only with Renee Zellweger will be released, a film Hamilton helped produce based that's partially based on his family. Hamilton's star is located across the street from the Roosevelt Hotel. LA Weekly notes another celebration is happening today, too: the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz apparently is today with an event this afternoon at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

              

It's been less than 48 hours since news of Michael Jackson's death at the age of 50 broke, and the fan tributes from his many local fans continue to pour in at significant locations around Los Angeles, including the Jackson family home in Encino and Jackson's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The tributes include flowers, candles, notes, and mementos, and already commemorative T-Shirts are up for sale from enterprising capitalists. A woman showed off her brand new Michael Jackson tattoo (on her, err, rear end) for a photog--one of the few who have added their images of the fan tributes to our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr.

Was Ed McMahon's Star Vandalized?

On Wednesday night, this is what Ed McMahon's Hollywood Walk of Fame star looked like just outside of the Roosevelt Hotel. There were no flowers or no notes, just newspaper stuck to the sidewalk with some black paint or tar over his name. Accident? Vandalism? Probably the latter--there are some crazy and mean spirited people out there. Luckily, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce cleaned it up that night and things are back to normal. Blogger TaraMetBlog also saw the star in ruin, noting her shock and dismay.

       

As promised by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, after equipment from the last night's Bruno premiere was moved, flowers would be placed on Michael Jackson's star in front of the Chinese Grauman's Theatre. Crowds are beginning to now gather there after spending yesterday at the star of radio personality Michael Jackson.

Add Cameron Diaz to the Hollywood Walk of Fame

"It will be cool to be under people's feet," Cameron Diaz joked today about her star. "It really is the place where people can understand exactly that actors are not really stars - they exist on the ground just like everybody else."

Kyra Sedgwick gets a Star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame

Just in case you were wondering, Kyra Sedgwick, wife to Kevin Bacon and who plays the hard nosed LAPD Deputy Chief on TNT's "The Closer" received a star, the 2,384th star, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Monday. It's located around Cinespace at 6356 Hollywood Blvd. She also sits on the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

In a bid to revive the Hollywood stars after years of abuse and being stepped on, Absolut Vodka became the first corporate contributor to a $4-million dollar restoration plan in advance of the Walk of Fame's 50th anniversary in 2010. To recognize Absolut's initiative (and creative marketing tactics?), Leron Gubler, CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce presented the company with an honorary star near the entrance to the Kodak Theatre. George Carlin once said that "anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac." Obviously, George lived here in LA. Almost his entire professional career was based here in the city of dreams, where he made his come true while influencing, inspiring, irritating, and entertaining so many different lives.

The names of the twenty-five 2009 honorees to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame were released today by the Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The group considers hundreds of annual submissions and the final recipients are ratified by the Board of Directors.

A chase that began at around 7 p.m. in Glendale ended with a crash right on the world-famous Walk of Fame at Hollywood and Vine last night.

No longer the CEO of Disney, but now immortalized on Hollywood Blvd. in the Walk of Fame, Michael Eisner was joined by Mickey, Minnie, current CEO Bob Iger and John Travolta (whoa, that moustache) when he was honored with a star today. The chosen spot, of course, appropriately themed, was outside Disney's Hollywood Blvd. property -- El Capitan Entertainment Center, home to Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The Flat Stanley project was started in 1995 by Dale Hubert, a Canadian schoolteacher. The project is based on the title character in Flat Stanley, a 1964 children's book. In the book, Stanley Lambchop is squished flat, which gives him unique abilities, like being able to slide under doors and travel in envelopes. The project is intended to increase literacy and educate children about geography.

Honorary Mayor Johnny Grant has died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles on Jan 9,,2008. He was found by police in his room at the Roosevelt Hotel where he lived after telling his manager he felt 'lousy.' Grant was a radio personality and television producer, and was was best known as the honorary mayor of Hollywood. He was also chair of the committee that selected stars for the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
