Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Pixies, Múm, Rupa & The April Fishes

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Legendary Boston-bred alternative rock outfit the Pixies are poised to conclude a three-night stint at the Hollywood Palladium with Brooklyn-bred TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone, who will be performing material from his solo endeavor Rain Machine of course. And, lastly, San Franciscan genre-defying septet Rupa & the April Fishes will be gracing the Mint. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch experimental Icelandic collective Múm. LAist favorites, Icelandic indie pop outfit Sin Fang Bous are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Bon Iver, Rain Machine, Telefon Tel Aviv, Portugal. The Man

Tonight Wisconsin-bred folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, otherwise known as Bon Iver (LAist Review), will be performing at the Wiltern with none other than Durham's own Megafaun. Brooklyn-bred TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone is poised to stop through the Echo with his solo endeavor Rain Machine. And, lastly, Wasilla's own rock outfit Portugal. The Man will be headlining the Troubadour with Cambridge-based rock duo Drug Rug. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Telefon Tel Aviv, a Chicago-based experimental electronic duo that experienced the unexpected passing of one of its two members—Charles Cooper—at the beginning of the year.

Tonight In Rock: New York Dolls, Gogol Bordello, BLK JKS, The Virgins

Tonight NY-based protopunk rockers New York Dolls will be headlining the Henry Fonda Music Box. NY's own gypsy punk outfit Gogol Bordello are poised to kick off the first concert ever at the newly-restored, art deco style Fox Theater in Pomona, which used to serve as a movie palace in the '30s before falling into disrepair. Local buzz band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (LAist Review) will be opening the aforementioned show. And, lastly, NY-based pop rock act the Virgins (LAist Interview, Review) will be gracing the El Rey Theatre with San Diegan singer-songwriter Anya Marina (LAist Review) and ruddy-haired bombshell Lissy Trulie (LAist Review) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch South African experimental rockers BLK JKS, who have been heralded as the TV on the Radio of their hemisphere (and rightfully so). LAist favorites Hecuba are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: TV on the Radio, Kimya Dawson, Eleni Mandell, Becky Stark

Tonight Brooklyn's crown jewel TV on the Radio (LAist Review) will be headlining the Glass House in Pomona. Moldy Peaches front woman Kimya Dawson is poised to headline the Troubadour. And, lastly, local chanteuse Eleni Mandell will be gracing the relatively newfangled Grammy Museum in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet's Little Room to catch Lavender Diamond front woman Becky Stark.

Week In Rock: India.Arie, Bloc Party, TV on the Radio, Friendly Fires

This week Denver-bred Grammy Award-winning neo soul singer India.Arie will be gracing Club Nokia in Downtown. St. Albans-based dance-pop outfit Friendly Fires (LAist Review) are poised to perform to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour. Brooklyn's crown jewel TV on the Radio (LAist Review) will be headlining the Glass House in Pomona. And, lastly, English indie rockers Bloc Party (LAist Review) will be taking on the Hollywood Palladium with LAist favorites Menomena (LAist Review) in tow.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Talk about a show explosion! Tonight Madonna will be entertaining the masses at Dodger Stadium. NY-based rock band Coheed and Cambria (LAist Review) will begin a series of shows at the Avalon in which they play each of their four albums in their entirety—tonight they'll be revisiting 2002's The Second Stage Turbine Blade. Local blues-rock band Rumspringa (LAist Review) will be playing at the Viper Room for the Day of the Living Party. And just about every music blogger and their mother will be in attendance at 3 of Clubs tonight, where SF natives Birds & Batteries and the Blacks will be performing. But the real tough choice of the night is between the Happy Hollows' (LAist Review, #2) EP Release Event at the Echo and TV on the Radio (LAist Review) at the Wiltern. The former certainly affords a bevy of superb lesser-known acts, like LBC's the Soft Hands and our personal favorite, Austin-by-way-of-Dallas the Strange Boys (LAist Review, #2). However, we can't deny the latter's latest effort, 2008's Dear Science. So head on over to the Wiltern to catch the buzzworthy Brooklyn-based indie rock quintet.

Day 2 of the out-of-state Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks this past weekend consisted of American Bang, Tokyo Police Club, The Avett Brothers, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Band of Horses, TVOTR, and Airborne Toxic Event who got their album torn apart on Pitchfork but rebutted. (Thanks a million to BetweenLoveandLike aka Erica for the ATE pics!)

As the year enters week two, organizations are programming newer music, that which was composed in the last century. This weekend, the Los Angeles Philharmonic began their Concrete Frequency series to an excellent start wth Aaron Copland's "The City" played to film and Edgard Varèse's "Amériques." After the concert, hip-hop violinist duo Paul Dateh and inka one (we interviewed Paul him this summer) played in the lobby by the cafe while Breakestra funked up the BP Hall.

Amoeba is known for their legendary in-stores, and this four track disc will be available at all three stores (including ours), and online, March 27th.

We admit it. We love year-end Best Of lists. Why? We think lists by a variety of people are a far better way to see trends and discover new acts than say award shows or sales charts. If it weren't for Best Of lists it's rare that you'd hear so much about TV on the Radio, The Cold War Kids, The Hold Steady, Joanna Newsum, or the Knife - and who knows, maybe it's...

Not that we care what they think in Frisco but the SF Weekly (wait, we thought you weren't supposed to call it SF? hmmmm) named Honeycut the Best Soul/Funk Band in town.

"Primetime" (ABC, 9:00 p.m.) Diane Sawyer visits North Korea "Battlestar Galactica" (Sci Fi, 9:00 p.m.) New episode! "Charlie Rose" (PBS, 11:30 p.m.): journalist John F. For the third or fourth week in a row (who's counting?) our lovable loser, Beck, tops the charts at Amoeba in Hollywood with his latest collection. Just behind Beck is the super sweet double-cd Pavement reissue of Wowee Zowee that included, in some cases, information as to how to download a pristine MP3 copy of their April 1994 concert at the Palace here in Los Angeles. 1. Beck - Information 2. Pavement - Wowee...

If the Sunset Junction was too hip, and the Weekly Detour Fest was too cool, and what you're after is something with a little more edge, something you won't accidentally run into your high school assistant principal at - The Arthur Nights is your godsend. Guaranteed to be weird, the kids over at Spaceland have moved the festival downtown to the legendary Palace Theater and tonight's acts feature underground darling Devendra Banhart (above). Throughout...

Babydaddy, Jake Shears, Ana Matronic and the rest of the Abba-esque Brit dance group Scissor Sisters are finding just as much success here in the states as they did early last month in the UK where they debuted at #1. The follow-up to 2004's eponymous freshman offerring did extremely well here in LA last week due to several factors: they headlined a sold-out show at the Shrine last Thursday, they appeared on Indie on...

This adventure started like many others, with a bag of treats from Trader Joe’s, a jug of Fadorade, an already looped pal, and a long walk up a steep hill. TV on the Radio : hit the stage like the kind of fireworks that boom pretty and loud and then surprise you by exploding 3 or 4 more times before falling down to earth in glittery bits of glimmering ash. TVOTR, an unlikely major-label...

If you missed TV on the Radio at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night, or if you're like me and hate seeing a band you really dig opening for another band you don't dig nearly as much, head out to Pomona tonight where TVOTR will be playing at the Glass House. The advert for the show was briefly removed from the Glass House Web site, but rest assured it is happening. When bands play...

It never really feels like summer until I go to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. By that logic, summer begins tomorrow night, so pack your pic-a-nic basket and be there to usher in the new season with this bitchin’ bowl line-up. Tomorrow at the Bowl!! 7pm!! The legendary, electro retro future sounds of Massive Attack, and experimental, art rock, genre bending sweethearts, TV on the Radio (w/ Gang Gang Dance). Tickets are still...

Rock is back in a real way, including old school rock from some classic rock legends as well as Nicole Richie's dad! May we recommend the Black Keys, Catfish Haven, Everclear, Hella, Roger Manning Jr. (from Beck's band and Jellyfish), The Mars Volta, Los Lobos, (Santa Barbara's) Sugarcult, TV on the Radio, and yes even JT Basement Jaxx - Crazy Itch Radio (XL Recordings) Bettie Serveert - Bare Stripped Naked (with DVD; Minty Fresh)...

Concerts at the Hollywood Bowl have a way of becoming historic, if you ask us. Maybe it's the rich history, or the casual class of the whole place, or the handpicked and careful bookings that have pretty much only given us the best of the best of musical performers.

Is anybody driving three hours to the desert for this? Two day passes ($167 + $23 in fees) and Saturday tickets ($86 + $15 in fees) are still available. Most of the rock bands have played LA clubs in the past few months. Otherwise you better really like DJs and house music……
