Tonight In Rock: The Allman Brothers, Jane's Addiction, Ben Folds, M83

Tonight legendary Southern rockers the Allman Brothers Band will be concluding a two-night stint at the Greek Theatre with the Doobie Brothers. The buzz from last night's antics, Tom Petty and Bruce Willis joining onstage to jam, is still lingering across the internet. Winston-Salem-bred singer-songwriter/pianist Ben Folds is poised to headline the Hollywood Palladium. Denver-based singer-songwriter Jill Sobule (LAist Interview), best known for her 1995 single "I Kissed A Girl," will be gracing Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, electronic shoegazer Anthony Gonzalez, otherwise known as M83, will be taking over the Glass House in Pomona. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre to catch local alternative rock outfit Jane's Addiction. Cleveland-bred industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails are slated to co-headline.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Free Fallin, Runnin' Down a Dream, Mary Jane's Last Dance, I Won't Back Down, Refugee. Four decades of music from legendary rock band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers hit the Bowl on what should be a perfect L.A. summer night.

Am in a post-Super Bowl stupor. The commercials were so-so, I wasn't unduly impressed, and the halftime show was terrible, they practically had to frickin' wheel Tom Petty and his aging cronies out there. Going for it on 4th and 13?? That made me almost as sick as the above clip.

How 'bout the end of that Super Bowl? Good thing Eli Manning came through because the ads really weren't all that, save for the near death of Richard Simmons (with Alice Cooper behind the wheel). But at $2.7 million per 30 seconds, who are we to not expect more?

So I spent my Sunday sick as a dog on the couch watching, of all things, football, literally because I was too wiped to find the clicker and move on. I'd forgotten how obnoxious the graphics were and how pompous and full of itself football has become. Still, gotta watch the Super Bowl for the commercials so I still have some time to devote to that. Am dismayed that the talentless hack Ryan Seacrest is going to be entertainment host for the Super Bowl and even more dismayed that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the featured band - can they not find an artist from the most current decade to perform at these effing things?

I wasn’t much of a Tom Petty fan in my pre-L.A. years, but like most people, I knew him from the basics…I had caterwauled the lyrics to "Free Fallin’" alongside other angsty Massachusetts teens at a dance or two, and I had been baffled by, but pretended I knew what the hell was going on in, the "Mary Jane's Last Dance" video.

NFL playoffs are here! Which means that Superbowl XLII is right around the corner. This year's Superbowl is going to be played in Arizona on February 3, 2007 and it was recently announced that Tom Petty will be playing the halftime show.

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...

The announcement that Tom Petty will play the halftime show at this year’s biggest football game got me thinking about those of the recent past. It seems like only yesterday that men across America froze their Tivo to catch a glimpse of Janet Jackson’s nipple ring during the Super Bowl XXXVIII performance. This notorious halftime show also featured Kid Rock wearing the American flag as a shirt and P. Diddy and Nelly flanked by scantily...

Tunng visited The Echo last night for the second time this year. The band was enthused by the turnout this time, coming on the heels of their third full-length and first release for Thrill Jockey, Good Arrows. On the album, Tunng's music has an endearing balance of soft instrumentation over digital percussion and effects with occasional hand claps. Call it "folktronica" if you must. Live, however, it's a bit disconcerting to see three long-haired...

My heart wasn't saying Bruuuuuuuuce, it was booing. The biggest cliche in amateur criticism is to say "I liked his older stuff better". Bruce Springsteen is supposed to be held on the same level as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, or Johnny Cash. However, if one is to keep it real, the songs The Boss released after the mid '80s don't hold up to contemporaries like Tom Waits or Tom Petty. Seriously, after the Born...

LA Times staffer and Buzz Bands blogger Kevin Bronson's story "Taking the L.A. indie rock scene personally" hit stands last Thursday. By means of an intimate portrayal, Bronson set forth his pick of indie rock up-and-comers for L.A.'s indie rock scene in 2008. While I completely admire that he would put his neck out there for three rather small, entirely worthy bands (The Airborne Toxic Event, Castledoor, and The Deadly Syndrome) at the forefront of...

With a crowd that maybe topped 35, we caught Ferraby Lionheart's appearance last night in the intimate back room of the Tangier Lounge.

Let me preface the following review with: I've never seen Grand Ole Party, Everest, or Sea Wolf perform live before. Last night's show at The Echo was exceptional. However, I noticed a palpable disparity between Sea Wolf fans as I traveled from the back to the front of the brimming room. In the back, I experienced insouciant veterans, who felt as though the set list dragged a bit, but ended with a bang. In...

The Long Beach teenager who became the youngest person to climb the Seven Summits after she mounted Everest last month, says that even though she fell into a frozen lake, waiting for the weather to break was the hardest part of her climb. Samantha Larson, 18, graduated Long Beach Polytechnic High School early so she could take a year off before entering Stanford. Instead of hanging out in her parent's house or interning at...

Believe it or not, but glampop rockers Poison have been on Capitol for 21 years now. And if that doesn't make you feel old, next year, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" will be 20.

Steve Nash and the Suns are in town tonight playing the Lakers. And to us, he looks like the product of a Tom Petty and James Blunt affair......

When you write and sing songs as good as Whisper Town 2000, you can make any list you want. Here are Morgan Nagler's Best CDs of 2006 1. The Beatles The White Album 2. The Rolling Stones Exile On Main St. 3. Neva Dinova The Hate Yourself Change 4. Elliot Smith Elliot Smith 5. Notorious BIG Ready To Die 6. The Jackson 5 Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 7. Tuesday night Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rocked the Hollywood Bowl and the surprise of the night was when long-time Petty producer and fellow Wilbury joined the band to play the classic cut "Handle With Care". Although no one can fill Roy Orbison's shoes, Lynne does a fair job and it's also nice to hear Mike Campbell on the slide. And even though Petty is from Florida and still has that southern accent, his...

David Geffen won the bidding war in the mid '80s to nab the country-tinged LA band Lone Justice and their self-titled debut came out to much hype. Everyone was fixated on the blonde singer, Maria McKee, whose voice was often compared to both Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin as the songs went from bluesy to hillbilly with a solid foundation in rock. Record sales didn't meet expectations despite being overwhelmingly loved by critics, fans,...

Liquid Nitrogen + Hotel Swimming Pool + Nerds = oooooooo - via Boing Boing

At halftime of the Lakers-Suns playoff game 3 tonight, a Tom Petty song played during the "McDonald's I'm Lovin' It Highlights." And LAist couldn't help but think of Petty's doppelganger: Suns' point guard Steve Nash.
