Jay-Z Announces Staples Center Show, March 26th

Jay-Z's show at UCLA this Sunday has long been sold out. Damn college kids and their disposable incomes! Don't worry, LA-based Hova fans. Sean Carter just announced he's coming back. This time he's bringing his show to the Staples Center, March 26th. The rap icon who's currently on the road with Wale and N.E.R.D. finishing up the final dates of his college tour, will pack up his Yankee hat and hit the road again for "The Blueprint 3 North American Tour." The BP3 tour starts on February 22nd in Houston and takes Jay's "Empire State of Mind" to arenas across the country to places like New Orleans, Boston and San Jose before wrapping it up right here in LA. Young Jeezy will serve as the opening act. Tickets go on sale November 13th, with various pre-sales beginning November 10th.

Lloyd Newson is bringing his radical DV8 Physical Theatre to UCLA for two shows this weekend. For those not familiar, Newson and his troupe create some of the most interesting dance performances out there today (check out these three amazing YouTube clips). This Friday and Saturday, they will bring the controversial “To Be Straight With You,” which explores tolerance, intolerance, religion and sexuality based on 85 interviews with the pious and apostate, straight and gay, activists, among others. It ultimately asks how modern society will reconcile faith and human rights.

Dodgers Release Tickets for Games 6 & 7

The Dodgers lost yesterday, giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead in the series, but if our boys in blue win tomorrow, the playoff series comes back to Los Angeles for games on Friday and if need be, on Saturday. That said, Dodgers officials today are releasing 6,000 tickets for the two potential games. The cheapest tickets go for $51. Go, go Dodgers!

Stay Safe: CHP Out in Full Force this Holiday Weekend

It's the last holiday weekend of the summer and that means more drinking and driving than usual. Last year Labor Day, 40 people died on California freeways--half of those killed were not wearing a seat belt, according to the California Highway Patrol. That said, the agency will begin a Maximum Enforcement Period statewide at 6:01 p.m. through midnight on Monday, meaning every available officer will be on the road keeping a vigilant eye out for errant drivers, mainly for violators of the three major causes of highway deaths: speeding, drinking and driving and not wearing a seat belt.

NIN Shows Rescheduled for Next Week

After falling sick and canceling two shows, Trent Reznor is getting better and this afternoon announced the rescheduled dates for the farewell tour, which ends here in Los Angeles. "Sorry about the hassles with the show not happening last night and tomorrow's rescheduling," he wrote on the band's webpage. "If it would have been possible to pull these off, I would have. Anyway, here's the new plan. I appreciate your patience and understanding - we're attempting to make sure that everyone has the best experience possible and we're at full power." Those dates include 9/6 at the Echoplex (unchanged), 9/8 at the Henry Fonda (rescheduled date) and 9/10 The Wiltern (rescheduled date). Rockstar Status? Free Tix for LA Phil Conductor's Inaugural Performance Scalped for $1600

Well, we did call him the Obama of classical music earlier this year. 28-year-old Gustavo Dudmel is set to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic this upcoming season in what is probably going to continue to put Los Angeles on the map for the genre. Former conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the group strong in past years and it helped to be in the internationally renown Walt Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry (did you know, the hall was designed before the similar-looking Guggenheim in Spain? Los Angeles just didn't have the money back then to build it).

Last weekend, the noted Bruce Norris play, "The Pain and the Itch" opened at the Boston Court in Pasadena, earning the Critic's Pick nod from Back Stage. "This astutely designed and intelligently rendered production is a shared feather in the cap for two of L.A.'s most adventurous theater companies," wrote Les Spindle of the Furious Theatre Company's production.

First Subway Fare Gates Coming this Week

By the end of this week, we should see gates in the Metro Purple Line Wilshire/Normandie station, reports LA Streetsblog: "Once the Wilshire/Normandie installation is completed, Metro will continue along the Red and Purple Lines, a process that Rick Jager estimates could take up to six months before moving on to the Green Line, then the Blue Line and finally, the Gold Line." But that doesn't mean they'll be in working condition. "A start date for the turnstiles to be operational hasn't been announced, nor whether they will begin operation "piecemeal" or wait until the system is installed at every rail stop."

Scalpers Disciplined by Police at Jackson Memorial

Police quickly surrounded a man who was allegedly scalping on the corner of Figueroa and Olympic in front of the only major crowd outside L.A. LIve. Once in handcuffs, the crowd cheered as he was escorted into the security perimeter to a detainee holding area. A security guard placed on the rooftop of the Grammy Museum and Club Nokia said he had witnessed various people throughout the morning get arrested for the same thing.

              

Of the 1.6 million who tried to get a pair of tickets and wristbands for tomorrow's downtown Michael Jackson memorial service, only several thousand were chosen for admittance into either the Staples Center or to the Nokia Theatre to watch a live feed. If you did get a ticket, part of the deal was to head to Dodger Stadium today for pick up. That meant thousands of people descending upon Echo Park and Elysian Valley, many of them during rush hour.

How to Get a Ticket for Michael Jackson's Memorial Service

AEG officials announced today that 17,500 tickets will be available for Tuesday morning's memorial service for popstar Michael Jackson at the Staples Center. A website has been set up for people (U.S. Residents only) to enter for a chance be selected for a pair of tickets, meaning a total of 8,750 names will be drawn. You have until 6 p.m. PST, July 4th to enter, so don't delay! Names drawn will be notified on Sunday by 8 p.m. PST (Update: It seems the server has crashed as the whole world tries to enter their info for a ticket)

The Death of Ticketmaster (in Name at least)

Ticketmaster and Live Nation merged today creating one behemoth of a company called Live Nation Entertainment. The merger, expected to save the companies $40 million and create annual sales worth up to $6 billion, is now subject to an anti-trust review because they would dominate 80% of the market. The new company will fill various rolls including promotion, ticketing and artist management. Ticketmaster has always been under general scrutiny for service charges and the such and most recently some legal complaints. The question now is whether with Live Nation's presence, will the company treat customers with the respect they've deserve? Comment with your predictions below...
