LAist Film Calendar: Cinefamily's Crafty, It's Just My Type!

The Cinefamily regularly makes movie-going an event, with mega-rare film screenings, musical performances, crazed clip compilations & backyard barbeques. This weekend, the group goes beyond even their usual gusto for those proud souls stitching & hoisting the DIY flag. Thursday, their "Don't Knock The Rock" series features I Need That Record!, a documentary tribute to the independent record store...

Tonight In Rock: Dropkick Murphys, Jon Brion, Thurston Moore, Ryan Lindsey

Tonight Massachusetts-based Celtic punk rockers Dropkick Murphys will be headlining the Hollywood Palladium. Local producer/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review) is poised to jam with friends at Largo at the Coronet, of course. And, lastly, famed Sonic Youth front man Thurston Moore will be annihilating eardrums at the Smell. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Hotel Café to catch Oklahoma-bred singer-songwriter Ryan Lindsey.

Release Date: January 29th, 2008

Since Watt is just coming off of a mini-tour, having just played the Vegoose Music Fest and playing a gig with Thurston Moore, it seemed appropriate to post a photo of his boat. Actually, it's a picture of the red thing in the boat, which is a recurring subject, like the red couch, but smaller. In case you didn't know, the boat is Watt's van. Watt has his own language. It's a combo of Pedro...

MIKE WATT AND THURSTON MOORE, HALLOWEEN 2007 IN VISALIA Oh man, these were too good to wait for Saturday. Watt just sent me these, fresh off the road. Thurston Moore asked him to do a 10-minute Bass solo version of Young Man Blues at a pizza place in Visalia last night. (More pics after the jump)...

I'm hoping that no one had time for TV last night and if they did they had the class to watch the Boris Karloff marathon on TCM. 8:00pm Ugly Betty ABC - The Halloween Episode. TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick. 9:00pm To Die In Jerusalem HBO - Have heard enough about this documentary on NPR and elsewhere to know it's a good thing. TV Junkie Pick-O-The-Night 9:00pm The Office NBC - If you don't feel like...

Bruce Springsteen & Neil Young - "All Along the Watchtower" We can't recall a more star-studded Tuesday night in rock in LA in a long time. We realize that many of you might be preparing to head out tomorrow night, but friends, tonight is the night to rawwwwwk! And Neil if you're reading this... if you feel like recreating this moment from 2004, the Sports Arena is just a freeway away from the Nokia......

You may have noticed a new button on our left-hand column with the title We See The Best Concerts. It dawned on us the other day that we really do go to the best concerts and we usually write about them the next day or a few days later. So here's a wrap up of all 37 shows we reviewed this month, with links to the posts just in case you missed it. Chris...

After the amazing Redd Kross - Sonic Youth show at the Greek, we all headed over to an afterparty at El Cid. Thurston had asked punk legends Saccharine Trust to perform their classic album, Pagan Icons. The album thing was kind of a theme. If you want to know where bands like Nirvana got their inspiration from, in addition to Daydream Nation, you really need to add Pagan Icons and Born Innocent to your...

His name is J Mascis. He has long gray hair and looks like he practices Witchcraft, or plays Warcraft. Indeed he practices the guitar and plays with Dinosaur Jr. which could easily be the soundtrack to a nice carpet bombing. Bringer of piercing solos and bittersweet lyrics, Mascis and the original members of the grunge-era group begin their US tour in our fine burb tonight at the Troubadour with another show tomorrow. While it's...

Before Nirvana there was Sonic Youth and this summer there will be nirvana at The Greek when Sonic Youth plays their entire Daydream Nation album. If June 20th isn't marked on your calendar you probably shouldn't enter this contest. We have a pair of tickets for this show. We also have two posters for the winner as well. To enter tell us a story about Sonic Youth. Tell us what the show is going...

Just a teeny bit shy of Daydream Nation's twenty-year anniversary in June, Sonic Youth is hitting up festivals this summer with their performance of their classic album, in its entirety. Their first stop is in Chicago on July 13th as part of the Pitchfork Music Festival in collaboration with ATP’s Don’t Look Back Series. From there, the foursome (Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Steve Shelley) will move onto dates in Berkeley, Los Angeles, Munich, Berlin and three shows in London.

There are really only two major music festivals that truly matter, like really matter: Coachella and South by Southwest. The former happens over two three days in the desert near Palm Springs, the latter rages for about a week on the dusty streets of Austin, Texas. SXSW features over 1,000 bands. You buy a wristband and you wander from bar to bar, club to club, alleyway to patio and you get to see some...

Be Your Own Pet Be Your Own Pet (Ecstatic Peace) – Thurston Moore signed this teenage band from Nashville. Critics like to compare the lead singer to Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Most critics think it’s a fun, infectious record but detractors criticize the lack of sophistication. The whole thing only lasts 33 minutes. Tickets are still available for their show at the Troubadour on June 27th.

We have many fond memories from Coachellas past, but right now we're totally jealous of that Lollapalooza lineup. Sunday tickets are sold out. You'll either have to buy a two-day pass or take your chances in the secondary market.

Long weekends are relaxing, but they can also be daunting. To assuage the malaise, LAist has assembled a list of musical diversions that are kind to your wallet, while also providing a nice alternative to the crowded beaches. Unless otherwise noted, all performances are free.

The history of LA punk is a great one, and a story that has been told many times in the twenty-odd years since the initial flowering of the scene. Amidst the many bands that made it up, there's one little band that is often forgotten when looking at the greater whole: The Minutemen, the three-man powerhouse from Pedro.
