Tonight Nashville-based alternative rock supergroup the Dead Weather, which features Jack White of the White Stripes and Alison Mosshart of the Kills, will be headlining a sold-out show at the Roxy. Local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) is poised to flow in celebration of his forthcoming disc, 2009's Jhelli Beam, at Amoeba Records early on in the evening. And, lastly, San Franciscan psych rock sextet Sleepy Sun will be performing at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with Dios (Malos) and Slang Chickens. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Portland-based indie rock duo Viva Voce (LAist Review). LAist favorites Cut Off Your Hands (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

It is the start of a new year and that means we're slouching towards Southern California's biggest music festivals, starting with Coachella in the middle of April. And, as usual, the internet is simply ablaze with line-up rumors. But this year, much like last, crazed fans have taken things a step further on the festival's message board, going as far as to contact bands directly for confirmation.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

                             

Last Thursday, British soul singer Alice Russell MySpace) returned to the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, headlining an evening that was supported by locals Emi Meyer (MySpace), Lelia Broussard (MySpace), and followed by Jesca Hoop (MySpace). The show was LAist's pick for Tonight in Rock, and included covers of "Seven Nation Army" and "Crazy".

You’ve heard it already, “Wow, they’re like 13 years old and in a band!” The Jack Bambis have gotten a lot of attention for their ages – guitarist Indio, bassist Jasper and singer Lia are all 13. Cash, the drummer, shies a few years behind. But the Jack Bambis sound better than a whole lotta crap on the radio being made by people 21 and up (i.e. old enough to know better). Cash graduated from Flea’s Silverlake Conservatory of Music, so they’ve gotten some nice attention from the RHCP crowd, such as a slot on the conservatory’s fundraising concert Hullabaloo and some kudos from Kiedis in the press. Cam’Ron Killa Season (Diplomatic Man) – He’s straight-up gangsta. In the last two years he’s hunted internet pedophiles, gotten shot and beefed with Jay-Z. Some critics complain that the beats on this album sound too much like the last one, but most agree that his lyrics make it an enjoyable listen.
