Earlier this month, LA-Underground co-presented a showcase, with KXLU and Manimal Vinyl, at The Smell in Downtown LA, featuring Alexandra Hope, VOICEsVOICEs, EXITMUSIC, and Warpaint.

Last Saturday, Little Radio (MySpace) resumed its weekly Summer Camp (MySpace) series Downtown with performances by local bands Crystal Antlers (MySpace), Imaad Wasif (MySpace), and The Pity Party (MySpace).

On Friday night, The Damn Sons (MySpace), BlackBlack (MySpace), and The Like (MySpace) performed at the 6th St. Warehouse in Downtown LA.

The City of West Hollywood's Planning Commission met the other night to discuss the Standard Hotel's request to extend their poolside hours to 1:30 a.m. from the current weekend midnight closing (closes at 10 p.m. on weekdays), keeping the hotel's poolside bar competitive with other Sunset Strip nightlife options. B-Side Blog attended the meeting to support the idea, but left the meeting fuming. He was the first to speak during public comment:

... as I wrapped up my little speech, something came over me. I just felt the need to be... snarky. I told the Commission that the Sunset Strip has been around for decades. People who move next door and complain about the noise, well, that's like moving next to a dumpster and complaining about the smell. ZING!
Then came the homeowners, who of course were not in favor of the extra weekend hour and a half. This is where it gets good:

For Westsiders, two bands of note at The Good Hurt tonight: Atomatique (powerpop) and Kinetic Stereokids (DJ/Rock/Ecclectic). Downtown, check out The Smell for experimental trip-hop etherealsim with All Neon Like. Popular Seattle singer/songwriter/rocker Jeremy Enigk will be at the Troubadour and there's a great mix of psychobilly, Spanish ska and surf at The House of Blues. Get fresh with some down South banjo fiddlin', mandolin fingerin' and jew harpin' at The Hotel Cafe as Ray Don & The Backwash Band remind us of Splash Mountain at Disneyland (lyrics not Disney safe, think sexual banjo). Also on the bill is Zachariah & the Lobos Riders -- classic sounding Western rock, sometimes mixed with hip-hop. Of course, Spaceland and The Echo are always safe bets.

There's only one place hardcore enough to host a night bands tonight and that's The Smell in downtown. After all, it is their 10-Year Anniversary Series.

Mars Volta - L'Via L'Viaquez

Mi Ami (ex-members of Black Eyes from SF) and Bipolar Bear. Since we love classical minimalism, we thought to ask the band a few questions before tonight's show:

If you happened to miss the December 3 Downtown News, you haven't seen the personal ads Jon Regardie suggested to help Mayor Villaraigosa get a New Year's Eve smooch. They're pretty hysterical from top to bottom. My favorite one begins with the perfectly awkward hook: "Looking for My Energizer Lady Bunny: Hot bilingual mayor has an opening on his staff - for love!" In the same edition, peep Evan George's report on the uneasy relationship...

It’s a beautiful, wonderful day! Why, you ask? Have they pulled the troops from Iraq? Is America’s Next Top Model going to be syndicated twice a night, every night? Has the retail industry decided that Christmas should just be about spending time with family and loved ones, and yanked their holiday marketing bonanzas? No…it’s even better. For those of you who missed it this morning…Dunkin’ Donuts coffee will now be available for purchase in...

A bit of happy news for our sister site over in Texas: the Austin Chronicle just named Austinist Best Local "Fun" News Site. Yay for the Ist-iverse! The correct term is babes, sir: "Point Break Live!" -- yes that's right, as in the classic 1991 Patrick Swayze-Keanu Reeves film -- is coming to a stage near you! NBC is leaving its longtime home in Burbank for the greener pastures of Universal City, or Campo...

We bought this from a dude's Toyota trunk in a dollar store parking lot for $50 an 8th. Trainwreck is a toker's favorite, with its unique flavor and powerful high who can blame them? This sativa blend is rumored to have originated out of Humboldt, CA. Pre-Smoke Examination: The nugs come in all sizes, from the pictured above, to little pebble sized nugs no bigger than a US dime. The buds are fresh, and...

We bought an 8th of this stuff for $50 from some guy eating Cap'n Crunch cereal. Skunk #1 is an infamous and popular strain and has been around LA, and the world, for decades. In case it isn't obvious already, it got its name for smelling like those black and white members of the rodent family, Skunks.

  • Don't litter stupid! Soap opera actress Kirsten Storms was pulled over on the 101 freeway early Friday morning for throwing a cigarette out her window. Then officers noticed the smell of alcohol. Whoops! Jail she went.

  • We got an 8th of Lavender for $50 from a friend who told us it was allegedly grown by the Hell's Angels. Lavender is genetically engineered by Soma Seeds, and won 1st prize at the 2005 Cannabis Cup in the Indica category.
