Week In Rock: Girls, Tom Brosseau, Little Dragon, Cold Cave

This week San Francisco-based alt pop act Girls will be headlining a sold-out show at the Troubadour with none other than the Morning Benders in tow. North Dakota-based singer-songwriter Tom Brosseau is poised to grace the Largo at the Coronet. The City of Brotherly Love's own experimental synth-pop outfit Cold Cave will not only be taking on the final show of the year at Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock, but will also take part in this week's edition of Part Time Punks with local electronic chanteuse Nite Jewel. And, lastly, Swedish electronic act Little Dragon will be performing at the El Rey Theatre.

Tonight In Rock: Martha Wainwright, Ra Ra Riot, The Submarines, John Doe

Tonight Canadian folk rock singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright will be performing at the Getty. Recent Apple commercial inductees, LA-based indie pop duo the Submarines are poised to headline the Troubadour with the Morning Benders and the Mumlers in tow. And, lastly, famed punk rock front man, X's John Doe will be rocking out at the Largo at the Coronet. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch Syracuse-bred indie rockers Ra Ra Riot. Auckland-based indie pop outfit Cut Off Your Hands (Review) are slated to kick things off.

Tonight LA offers a bevy of options that make our show-going brain hurt. We've got the conclusion of the usual free Monday Night Residencies. Kenan Bell will be performing one final night with the Morning Benders and White Arrows at Spaceland. Rademacher and the Western States Motel (LAist Interview) will be wrapping up shop at the Echo with One Trick Pony and Seasons. And Manhattan Murder Mystery will be doing the same with Princeton (LAist Interview) and Divisadero at Mr. T's Bowl. But we're going to try to tackle two shows. How? Well, we'll start things off in the heart of Downtown at the Smell with the jazz-infused pop rock group LAKE and then continue the rather tranquil evening over in K-town at R Bar with LA's own alt-rockers Everest, who will be playing around 9:30 PM. The secret password? "hilljack"

The Kooks and The Morning Benders showcase a plateful of indie pop rock goodness at The Echo on February 8, 2008.

It's a quality night in Echo Park with Super Furry Animals and Holy Fuck are at the Echoplex and if you can swing it, right there at The Echo you'll find The Kooks and The Morning Benders. In Hollywood, Grammy award winning Dirty Vegas front man Steve Smith is slated to play acoustic tonight at the Hotel Cafe (but is not on the calendar anymore, so who knows).

It may be a holiday, yet Mondays are always a guaranteed good night for music with all the residencies in addition to tonight's appearance of Venice local Harry Perry (pictured right) in WeHo

Two weeks ago, locals The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace), declared one of three bands to watch by The LA Times' Kevin Bronson, performed the first of five shows for their January residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake.

Now that the rain has gone away, Spaceland on Ice can continue this week with The Chapin Sisters and their folk/pop.

Last Friday, I made a plan to go out to Club Underground at The Echo for my birthday, and I had all my friends meet me there. On a total stroke of luck, I realized a band I had discovered a month or so before was also playing that night before Club Underground started. So I told everyone to get there at 9 if they wanted to see a good band first.

It's a rockin' Friday night in LA with Stevie, Van Halen, RZA, and R. Kelly in town, a XMAS Sweater Party at Crash Mansion featuring local indie up'n comers, and cow punk comes alive at Safari Sam's, with X side project (since 1982) The Knitters.
