Seven Questions with...Diana Miller, Talent Executive - 'Last Call with Carson Daly'

LA has a diverse cast of characters. Whether it's the characters with stirring stories or interesting occupations or the people who are just simply characters, this town has them all. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..."

"The Hives have rocked stadiums of 40,000 or more! You 1200 people should present no problem...," bombastically declared Hives' frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist to the Mayan Theatre crowd last Thursday night (9/25/08).

Tonight we find Los Angeles amidst a flurry of relatively pedestrian shows, including local indie rock heavyweights the Cold War Kids (LAist Review), who just concluded their stop by KCRW a few short minutes ago, New York City-based electro-pop masterminds Brazilian Girls (LAist Interview) and Swedish rock band the Hives. If you're as bummed as we are about Glasser's cancellation of their gig at the poorly-lit dive 3 of Clubs, then get your dose of underground greatness elsewhere. Aaron Embry of AmniOn's "solo" performances have steadily garnered him wide acclaim. Acknowledged as a musical genius by many, Embry actually played keys for Elliott Smith before Smith's untimely death. He'll be playing the Tangier Restaurant in Los Feliz. But the lineup at Spaceland tonight intrigues us most. Specifically, Obi Best. Or rather Alex Lilly, who can generally be found singing back-ups for the Bird and the Bee. Lilly has penned a whimsical new record that rivals, if not exceeds, the Bird and the Bee's sing-song brand of saccharine pop.

Last night garage-punk rockers the Hives got to show off their new stuff for the LA crowd at the Avalon. Armed with new material from their new CD The Black & White Album, the Hives broke down the walls and rocked the hell out of the crowd. Dressed in their typical 50's style getups, the band enters the stage without any opening acts. Resembling more of a Southern Baptist preacher than a rock star,...

The year 2007 has been good to the Hives, what with a TV commercial, a collaboration with Timbaland, and the recent announcement that they'll be opening for Maroon 5 at the Staples Center in November. The Hives, a Swedish garage-rock outfit that spent a majority of musical discovery on small-time labels, had officially struck gold with their last album, Tyrannosaurus Hives. It was at this point that they signed to Interscope, and the punks...
