Last Tuesday, LA-Underground co-presented a show with KCRW at the Bootleg Theater, featuring Kentucky-based Daniel Martin Moore as well as beloved locals Eleni Mandell, Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), and Ferraby Lionheart.

Tonight Utah-based alternative rock outfit the Used will be headlining the Wiltern with Florida-bred Underoath side project the Almost. The Bird and the Bee front woman Inara George is poised to take on the Bootleg Theater. And, lastly, Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview) will be gracing Largo at the Coronet. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch Brooklyn-based indie rocker Bishop Allen. Seattle-based indie pop act Throw Me The Statue are slated to perform as well.

Tonight the principal architect of P-Funk, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (LAist Review), will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. Grammy-nominated pop singer Katy Perry (LAist Review, #2) is poised to headline the Hollywood Palladium with none other than local indie pop duo the Bird and the Bee (LAist Review, #2). And, lastly, Brooklyn-by-way-of-Cincinnati indie rock act the National will be taking on the Wiltern with California-bred folk rocker Cass McCombs in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch NY-based experimental folk rock outfit Akron/Family. LAist favorites Howlin' Rain (LAist Review) and Lucky Dragons are slated to kick things off.

Tonight local indie pop duo the Bird and the Bee (LAist Review, #2) are slated to headline the Echoplex with LAist favorite Juliette Commagere (LAist Interview, Review) in tow. LA-based indie rockers the Henry Clay People (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) are poised to kick off a month-long residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, Fullerton's own rock outfit Dusty Rhodes and the River Band will be starting their residency at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Foreign Born side project Fool's Gold, who will be taking on a free, month-long Monday night residency.

This week Canadian poet, novelist and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen will be taking on a two-date stint at Club Nokia in Downtown. Local indie pop duo the Bird and the Bee (LAist Review, #2) are slated to headline the Echoplex with LAist favorite Juliette Commagere (LAist Interview, Review) in tow. Israeli shock rock troupe Monotonix (LAist Review) will be letting it all hang out at Spaceland. And, lastly, Portland-based folk songstress Mirah is poised to grace the Echo.

Tonight the Black Keys' front man Dan Auerbach will be headlining the El Rey Theatre. LA-based indie pop outfit the Bird and the Bee are poised to play the Tricot Showroom. New York's own shoegaze queen Asobi Seksu will be gracing the Troubadour. And, lastly, local indie rock trio Nico Vega are slated to open for the Von Bondies at the Roxy. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet. Not only will Rickie Lee Jones be rocking the main stage (with a very, very special guest we're told), but Boston-based ex-Candy Butcher front man Mike Viola will be playing in the Little Room.

Tonight Bay Area punk rockers NOFX will be concluding a two-date stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Toronto's own raucous punk outfit Fucked Up are slated to headline the Echoplex with LA locals Mika Miko. LA-based indie rockers Oliver Future will be gracing Spaceland. And, lastly, English rapper Lady Sovereign is poised to flow at the Echo. But we insist that you head over to the Museum of Natural History to catch the second edition of First Fridays. Acclaimed indie-pop duo the Bird and the Bee will be accompanied by D.C.-bred indie rockers Jukebox the Ghost.

It’s the first Friday of the month, meaning that the First Fridays series continues at the Natural History Museum tonight. It’s a little gathering where you learn a little and party a whole lot more. First up at 5:30 (and 6) pm is a tour of the Vertebrate Paleontology Collection with NHM Curator Dr. Lawrence Barnes. At 6:30 pm, there’s a discussion and book signing on “Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters” with Dr. Don Prothero, tackling evolution, creationism and “intelligent design.” Now after all that learning, grab yourself a drink and listen to the live music from 7-10 pm featuring the music of Jukebox the Ghost and The Bird and the Bee with DJs The Phatal DJ and DJ Michael Stock (dublab.com) in the African Mammal Hall. Admission is $9. Dinner and drinks are on sale beginning at 5 pm. And, if you see our News Editor Andy Sternberg wandering the crowd, wish him a happy birthday and buy him a beer!

KGRL -- mentioned previously here -- is a local "...non-profit non-commercial internet radio station that plays the freshest and the best ALL QUALITY female artist / fronted acts in a wide variety of genres." Their "Top 10 Artists To Watch Out For In 2007" included local singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles (MySpace), who in 2008 experienced mainstream recognition due to "Love Song", which garnered Grammy nominations for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Song of The Year.

                      

Last Wednesday, local indie band Obi Best (MySpace) -- previously mentioned here -- performed at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood. Opening were Miami-based singer-songwriter Rachel Goodrich (MySpace) and the Rio de Janeiro-based Kassin +2 (MySpace).

Alex Lily, an integral backing force for the prominent pop duo the Bird and the Bee, has gone solo. Her 2008 debut Capades is a beauteous amalgam of conscientious tunes that makes you think as much as it makes you bop. And she wants you to live in the swirling, whimsical world that is her head.

Tonight two lucky dogs will be in attendance at the Raconteurs show thanks to LAist. And if those lucky dogs aren't you, then might we suggest some other options? Austin-based Okkervil River will be rolling through the Henry Fonda Music Box with local favorites Sea Wolf. Zykos, another exemplary Austin act that we are quite fond of, is slated to open as well. Bordello in Downtown will be hosting a superb bill of LA's finest, including Echo Park's EXITMUSIC. And tonight will be the final night of a three-night run featuring Brazilian pop sensation CSS at the Mayan. But, all things considered, the Barack Obama-rama Fundraiser at Spaceland takes the cake. The wondrous female-fronted lineup of predominantly electronic acts (Lady Tigra, the Bird and the Bee and Electrocute) will be belting out notes in support of the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee. As the relatively newfangled saying goes: Love your momma, vote Obama.

Last month, the singer-songwriter supergroup trio The Living Sisters (MySpace), comprised of The Bird and the Bee (MySpace)'s Inara George (MySpace), Eleni Mandell (MySpace), and Lavender Diamond (MySpace)'s Becky Stark, performed at the 35th Annual Topanga Days Festival (MySpace).

The moment has finally materialized: The official lineup for the three-day mega music fest in the middle of nowhere (aka Empire Polo Field in Indio) has been announced.

Two weeks ago, local singer/songwriter Inara George (MySpace) and her band The Bird And The Bee performed as the headliner at Detroit Bar (MySpace) in Costa Mesa.

As the year enters week two, organizations are programming newer music, that which was composed in the last century. This weekend, the Los Angeles Philharmonic began their Concrete Frequency series to an excellent start wth Aaron Copland's "The City" played to film and Edgard Varèse's "Amériques." After the concert, hip-hop violinist duo Paul Dateh and inka one (we interviewed Paul him this summer) played in the lobby by the cafe while Breakestra funked up the BP Hall.

Earlier this week, KGRL, "...a [Southern California-based] non-profit non-commercial internet radio station that plays the freshest and the best ALL QUALITY female artist / fronted acts in a wide variety of genres," presented their List of Influential CDs of 2007, which included local residents Inara George (The Bird and the Bee), Charlotte Martin (MySpace), Sara Bareilles (MySpace), and Carina Round (MySpace).

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year.

On Monday night, and after being on tour for two months, Rilo Kiley (MySpace) made their triumphant return to Los Angeles with a performance at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Starting this Thursday May 3rd, our little bohemian neighborhood that could, Silver Lake, will be holding its nine day long, 7th annual Silver Lake Film Festival, complete with indie movies, indie music, and even indie darling Parker Posey accepting the “Spirit of Silver Lake” award.
