LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fail Again

Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 11-1. On their second try to try and clinch the NL West, the Dodgers failed miserably. Only today they had no shot whatsoever. Three baserunning mistakes that led to three outs in the first two innings will not get it done. But then again having a spring training lineup won't help things either. Just to make sure the score was somewhat respectable, Chin-Lung Hu hit a sac fly in the ninth inning with one out to score Orlando Hudson. However a couple of positives come out of this: Vin Scully will now be calling the Dodgers clinch, and the Dodgers will do it in the visiting clubhouse at Petco Park. Sweet!

LAst Night's Action: Angels Outpitch Rangers

LA Angels defeat Texas Rangers 2-0. The score would seem to dictate this was a quick moving game, but quite the contrary happened. Walks and foul balls kept this game a three-hour grinder. Scott Kazmir went six shutout innings for the Angels yielding only six hits and no walks. Torii Hunter got the Angels on the board in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Maicer Izturis from second base. Although it would be the only run the Angels would need Vladimir Guerrero provided some insurance in the top of the third with a lead off booming home run. The Angels bullpen yielded only two hits and two walks in the three innings they pitched. This win gives the Angels a 7 1/2 game buffer in the NL West.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Marquis Loss

Colorado Rockies defeat LA Dodgers 3-0. In the race for win number 10, Chad Billingsley came up on the short end against Jason Marquis. He didn't do a terrible job giving up three runs on five hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings. The problem was that Marquis was better pitching a complete game two-hit shutout on only 86 pitches while walking no one. With the Dodgers offense sputtering, Friday is looking brighter as the days go by.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win a Squeaker

LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 4-2 (13 innings). The game just wouldn't end. All of the scoring in regulation came in the fifth with each team scoring twice. While both teams had their chances in the tenth inning to put it away, the lack of fundamental offensive baseball kept the game tied. Finally in the 13th inning with Casey Blake on board with a single, who else would knock the walk off homer other than Andre Ethier. To be honest Ethier's at bat looked horrendous until he popped that change up out to right field. So the Dodgers manage to avoid losing three consecutive games, the only team in baseball to do so. Also Randy Wolf gets his 11th no-decision of the season. The offensive star of the game was Juan Pierre who went 3-for-5 with a walk, three stolen bases and NO runs. Like I said, the Dodgers have not been playing fundamental baesball.

Portland Trail Blazers defeat LA Lakers 111-94. Absolutely nothing in this game was pretty. The Lakers offense was MIA scoring only 56 points through three quarters. A scary moment at the end of the third quarter happened when Trevor Ariza made a hard foul against Rudy Fernandez during a fast break opportunity. Fernandez landed hard on his ribs when he couldn't get his feet under him. Ariza was charged with a flagrant two foul and ejected from the game while Josh Powell and Portland's Travis Outlaw and LaMarcus Aldridge were given technical fouls for the scuffle afterwards. While the Lakers made a valiant attempt in the fourth quarter, a 28 point deficit at the start of the quarter was just too much to overcome. Hopefully they regroup quickly for the upcoming games at Houston and San Antonio.

Sports Illustrated just published a story on SI.com that Yankee's third baseman slugger Alex Rodriguez tested positive in 2003 for Primobolan and testosterone while with the Texas Rangers.

LA Angels defeats Texas Rangers 7-5. The Angels were in an awfully similar situation Thursday night as they were Wednesday night. Angel's starter Jon Garland gave up a four-spot to the Rangers in the first inning. Unlike Joe Saunders the previous night, Garland would stay in the game for eight innings an shut down the Rangers for the remainder of the game with the exception for a run in the fourth inning. Down 5-3 in the eighth inning, the Angels loaded the basepads. Pinch hitter Juan Rivera came up to the plate and drove a ball way out to the right centerfield wall for a go-ahead three-run double. Francisco Rodriguez would get this 51st save while the Angel's magic number goes down to 13.

LA Angels defeat Seattle Mariners 7-4. The Angels looked like they would suffer a letdown after their weekend sweep over the Yankees by falling behind the Mariners 3-0. But aided with a Juan Rivera solo shot and Vladamir Guerrero two-run shot in the fifth inning, the Angels came back to show who's king of the AL West. They got three insurance runs in the eighth inning and just continue to steam through any and all comers who stand in their way. Just to show how dominant the Angels are, at the All Star Break they had a six game lead in the division. As of this victory the Angels have a 15 game lead, and at 75-43 have the best record in baseball. In related news, the Angels flagship station AM 830 KLAA (which is owned by the Angels) will be a radio affiliate for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football.

Chivas USA ties LA Galaxy 1-1. The Galaxy came out strong at the beginning of the first half, but soon gave way to Chivas' aggressiveness. Ante Razov would score for Chivas in the 15th minute with the assist from Sacha Klejstan. The Galaxy didn't look sharp at all especially Landon Donovan. However Edson Buddle saved the Galaxy in the 72nd minute with a game tying goal with the assist to Peter Vagenas and David Beckham. Both teams remain in first place atop the Western Conference .

LA Dodgers defeat Atlanta Braves 2-1. Dodger's starter Derek Lowe flirted with a perfect game for six innings. In the top of the seventh Gregor Blanco hit a single up the middle to break up the perfect game, and Jeff Francoeur emerged from his hitting slump to go yard in the eighth inning for the sole run. Matt Kemp, coming off his golden sombrero performance the night before, hit a homer in the sixth inning to get the scoring started for the Dodgers. The Dodgers would eventually add the winning run in the seventh inning and would win their fourth consecutive series. Yet again the Dodgers crawl to one game under .500 and tied for first with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Atlanta Braves defeat LA Dodgers 9-3. Yeah Chad Billingsley was pitching a no-no. For four innings. Then the wheels came off in the fifth inning with a three-run double by Gregor Blanco. Billingsley went 5 1/3 innings giving up six runs, five earned on six hits and four walks. For the Braves, Jair Jurrjens brought his record to 9-4 going six innings giving up one run on five hits. Perhaps the telling moment of the night was the very last at-bat for the Dodgers. Matt Kemp came up with two men on and struck out giving him the golden sombrero for the night (four strikeouts).

LA Dodgers defeat Atlanta Braves 3-0. It was Mark Teixeira's double to lead off the eighth inning that broke up Hiroki Kuroda's perfect game. And it was that double that was the only blemish of Kuroda's game who pitched the entire game striking out six, walking none while throwing only 91 pitches in 2:03. Offensively, Blake DeWitt went 3-3 while Nomar Garciaparra smashed a hanging curve to the Dodger bullpen in the fifth inning to drive in James Loney. With the win, the Dodgers reach one game under .500 and are now tied with the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West.

LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 124-101. No tacos for the fans, but joy still rang out with the Lakers clinching the #1 seed in the Western Conference for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. If anyone predicted this 57-25 season after the chaos of last summer that simmered through training camp, they are liars. It's amazing what the emergence of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, the bench and the Pau Gasol heist can do to a team. The Lakers now face either the Denver Nuggets or the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.

LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 3-2. Dodger second baseman Chin-Lung Hu zinged a liner down the third baseline in the top of the ninth to score in Russell Martin from second base for the go-ahead run. The Dodgers end up taking two of three games from the Padres at Petco, and Jake Peavy denies using pine tar Saturday afternoon.

LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 112-108. The Lakers broke Lawler's Law by defeating the Mavericks even though the Mavericks got to 100 points first. Lamar Odom has a season high 31 points while Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol got 25 points each. The Lakers join the New Orleans Hornets as the only two teams in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff spot. With six games left to go, their only tough games are at home against the Hornets on the 11th and the San Antonio Spurs on the 13th.

The Dodgers have a certain way of making me look like a complete asshole. Just when I proclaim that it would take a miracle for the Dodgers to make the postseason, the offense explodes as if some saintly being was guiding them in the outfield. You know, they should make a movie about that. Against the Phillies on Wednesday the Dodgers scored 15 runs in an obvious show of laziness since a horrible Texas...

Thank heavens baseball is back. Despite my week of partaking in bacchanal debaucheries there was a void akin to eating empty calories. But enough about me.

Beckham Watch - The British are coming! The British are coming! Wait! The British are here! And they're drop dead sexy. Tonight's Action - Games are back! After a longer All Star break than most, the Angels will welcome the Texas Rangers at 7:05pm. Ten minutes later, the Dodgers will get underway in San Francisco. The Blue Crew joins three players (Martin, Penny, and Saito) who were already in town for the All Star game....

The Dodgers finished their disappointing season with a loss to eventual division champs San Diego Padres and closed the books on what was their worst season in over 10 years. We don’t know what was more frustrating, the fact that the Dodgers, just before the post season was to start last year, watched their first place team melt away under the misguided general management of the since fired Paul DePodesta. Or that the team that was brought in to replace it this season was mainly on the bench injured while unproven youngsters took the bulk of the innings as well as the bulk of the losses. LAist never thought that DePodesta’s “Moneyball” system was going to work in LA bringing in new players with stats but not taking into regard the chemistry of the clubhouse (see future Hall of Famer and clubhouse cancer Jeff Kent). Then to add insult to the injuries (sorry that was too easy) manager Jim Tracy, a master at making the most of what he was given, was let go.
