LAX Ranked 3rd Worst Airport in the World. Are You Surprised?

For an airport that looks horrible, operates terribly and still has no train connection, who would be surprised at the latest poll results? Based on an online survey taken by 14,000 members and world travelers of Priority Pass, LAX came in number three behind London's Heathrow Airport and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris.

How's Your Sexual Pleasure and Satisfaction, Los Angeles?

According a recent study conducted by condom manufacturer Trojan, we're at least in the top ten for US cities based on how often we have sex and how often we're satisfied with it. Their study has us ranking number 4 in the nation, with Angelenos getting lucky an average of 82 times a year--that's just a few times shy of the action in Atlanta and Washington DC, but well behind Houston, where the Texans are gettin' it on 101 times a year (is there anything else to do there?).

'Tis the season for Top Ten lists, but this one--the 14th annual Kosmont-Rose Institute Cost of Doing Business Survey released by the Rose Institute of State & Local Government at Claremont McKenna College--gives our fair city more of dubious honor. Once again, Los Angeles ranks among the "10 most expensive places in the country to do business," reports the Daily News.

Remember that earthquake we had last week? You know, the 5.4 magnitude that struck just before lunchtime and had tall office buildings swaying on their rollers, grocery stores seeing items topple from shelves to the floor, and the media scrapping all other programming for non-stop post-quake coverage. Yeah, that one. Well, if you felt it, the US Geological Survey wants to know about it.

American Express conducted a survey (link works only for cardholders) to find the top 10 restaurants in the Los Angeles area. Their polling group was their customers and their data was their transactions (so no subjective surveys here). The list below is based on the number of transactions:

For twenty-four hours starting tomorrow at noon, 120 scientists, 1,400 LAUSD students and community members will embark on the 2nd National Geographic BioBlitz in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area (though some say it's essentially a National Park), which stretches from the ocean to Cahuenga Pass at the 101 Freeway. Together they will comb the area, as well as Griffith Park, observing and recording as many plant and animal species as possible in 24 hours. Think of it as part scientific endeavor, part festival and part outdoor classroom.

A poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times/KTLA has found that Californians are practically split even on the issue of gay marriage, which was deemed legal last week by the California Supreme Court. The findings on their website, which was posted yesterday afternoon, time stamped for today, has already garnered over 3,000 comments. Let the fight begin...

The results of a recent survey administered in seven public schools in South Los Angeles are downright depressing. Students feel scared, unmotivated, unsupported, and ignored, and it's causing many to experience the symptoms of clinical depression. Administrators and psychologists agree, noting that the multiple killings of youth in the community leaves a pall on the students, and that their choice to skip school because they are "tired, had trouble sleeping, felt helpless or hopeless, were bored or felt lazy" is to be expected. With schools a reflection of a depressive environment, it's no wonder their students are sad.

Last month a program called Project 50 aimed at identifying homeless individuals most in need of immediate housing was begun in Los Angeles, and a similar program kicked off today in the City of Santa Monica.
