Surf's Gonna Be Up--Dangerously Up--at OC Beaches, Dude!

Lifeguards are cautioning surfers and swimmers alike that a high surf is due to hit the shores of the OC with some pretty serious strength starting tomorrow, according to the OC Register. "The waves are going to be so big from this south swell - the biggest our coast has seen for years - jet-ski assists have been added to this year's Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing so the surfers don't paddle against a raging river all day."

There has been some great surf in Los Angeles the last few days and Branimir Kvartuc, Founder of EppicSurf.com (it's like Facebook & Flickr for pro surf photographers and surfers), was kind enough to share what we've been missing down in the Southbay.

Dear Gothamist and Chicagoist,

Here's one of those great photo juxtaposition Los Angeles moments. A voter marks her ballot this morning as a surfer heads for the water at a polling place at Venice Beach lifeguard headquarters.

New footage has been released of one of the weekend's brawls at Paradise Cove in Malibu, this one shot by a mother who was there with her son. This particular scene proves some of the beach goers were acting just as bad as the paparazzi.

Two brawls between surfers and paparazzi over the weekend are leading Malibu officials to look more closely into the law regarding 1st amendment rights. "The city of Malibu will do all it legally can to protect and preserve the natural beauty and tranquillity of our town," Malibu Mayor Pamela Conley Ulich said in a statement, per the LA Times.

On Saturday, two paparazzi were reportedly injured when a group of surfers ousted them from Paradise Cove in Malibu. One paparazzo said his camera was tossed in the ocean and on the video you can hear someone make a slight death threat: "you're going to drown." It all started when Matthew McConaughey said he wished they would go away. The other surfers took it upon themselves to do so.

At least three paparazzi photographers were attacked in the Los Angeles area over the weekend in two separate incidents. On Friday evening as Britney Spears returned from a trip to Louisiana, a push-and-shove incident occurred between her body guard and a photographer outside an LAX terminal resulting in a minor abrasion to the paparazzo's face, but no charges were filed. On Saturday, two photographers were attacked by a group of surfers protecting Matthew McConaughey's wish to not be filmed while surfing at Paradise Cove. One paparazzo is reported to have several injuries and a water-soaked broken camera and another with a broken nose.

Perhaps you thought Burton was just for winter-sports, and didn’t realize that they’ve taken over Channel Islands. It’s all good, that’s why you’re reading LAist. Now they have all kinds of tight shit for the summer, and the beach, and just straight up kicking it pool-side. (For some of us, the beach is like a million hours of traffic on the 405)

Commuters and some politicians say the Foothill South 241 toll road needs to finish in order "to relieve congestion and accommodate development southern Orange County and take some of the burden off Interstate 5, the heaviest traveled corridor between Los Angeles and San Diego," the LA Times is reporting.

Topanga State Beach is not one of the state recreation areas threatened by the Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed budget cuts.

For your lunch time viewing pleasure, Tyson, the bulldog who can skateboard, surf and pretty much do all the things a surf dude should be able to do. Of course, Tyson is a dog, so that's a little out there. But nonetheless, a man at the dog park this morning tells me he saw this once with his own eyes in Huntington Beach. Whatever floats your boat man....

"The surf was so big, no one was surfing here and the Pier was closed. Apparently, all the surfers were in Redondo," explains LAist Featured Photos contributer, Jake Rome, about yesterday's surf. LA Times: No big waves yesterday. We beg to differ. The LA Times is reporting this morning that "the big waves predicted for Southern California beaches failed to materialize Tuesday afternoon." Photographer Jonathan Alcorn, an LAist Featured Photos contributer on Flickr, shot these large waves yesterday in El Segundo at El Porto. These surfers seem to be riding waves in that 7-12 ft. range the Times predicted yesterday morning. Hrmmmmm? Yes, throughout the region waves were not as high as many hoped to be,...

If you're looking for 20-25 ft. waves, you better at least head up to Point Conception or past Eureka for even higher ones. If 7-14 ft. waves are your style, then stay LA.The surf will build throughout today and tonight, peaking Wednesday. By Thursday, the swell is expected to diminish into the 5- to 7-foot range, Seto said. A rainstorm from the Northwest is expected Thursday through Saturday, bringing more than an inch of...

... but there's not much Los Angeles in the latest issue of Plenty, a bi-monthly magazine on environmental news and commentary. There's a feature story on the negative environmental impact of surfing and good tips for going to the farmer's market (use it with the new Farmer's Market Google Map), but our dear home is not but a mere mention in a small, but fun brief. With the fact that "urban areas are responsible for...

Dodgers 5, Rockies 4 - Los Angeles must feel like they dodged a bullet after Thursday night -- not because of Colorado's attempted comeback, but because of all the pitching injuries. Brad Penny earned his 13th win, but was pulled out of the game in the seventh after an all-out sprint to earn a single. Turns out he only had a bad cramp. Takashi Saito returned after missing seven games with shoulder trouble, taking the...

What's up moon doggies?! It's time again for the International Surf Festival 2006. Here's a quote from the AOL Cityguide:

Since the mid-1960s, when the Beach Boys were topping the charts with songs about SoCal surfing, the cities of Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach teamed up to present the International Surf Festival, a weekend of good vibrations with competitions in just about every possible beach activity. Surfing and life guarding top the list, with some of the country's most skilled surfers catching South Bay waves, but people can also compete in swimming, volleyball, running and even sand-castle-building events. Most events have categories to accommodate a range of ages and skill levels.

The event is going on all weekend long, and it's free to watch. So come check out this big beach spectacle or come be part of the mess. It's sure to be hot this weekend, and worth the trip to the coast regardless.

Antelope Valley residents were warned to not speed yesterday, yet 130 drivers still got tickets. Maybe next time, they will read the newspaper before they go to work.
