Sunset Strip Music Fest Organizers Announce 2010 Dates

Talk about wasting no time. Organizers for the Sunset Strip Music Festival have already determined the dates for its third year. It will run from Thursday, August 12th through the 14th, with a Sunset Strip street closure on the last day. “The first-ever street festival brought a renewed energy to The Sunset Strip, and we received a tremendous amount of positive response from the press, attendees, artists and city officials following the event,” said festival Executive Director Todd Steadman in a statement. “We are excited to solidify a date for 2010, and we are thrilled to build on the success of the event for next year.”

Legendary New York House Music Night Visits Hollywood

Body and Soul was one the country's most regarded house music affairs. With tunes spun by a legendary trio of house DJs, each individually renowned -- Francois Kevorkian, Joe Claussell, and Danny Krivit -- Body and Soul was a day of global rhythms from disco to techno. Literally a day -- this weekly was from Sunday afternoon to Sunday evening. The trio no longer does it weekly (a few times a year in NYC,) which truly makes each occasion that much more special. The second ever Los Angeles entry into the limited Body and Soul tour diary takes place this Saturday, from 9 p.m. - 3 a.m., at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.

For years, the Sunset Junction Street Festival has been a hub of Los Angeles' music event scene. Now, a few miles down the same street, a new festival--serving up a different kind of music--has appeared and organizers say it's here to stay.

The Sunset Strip Music Festival kicked off its first street closure today, drawing big crowds early afternoon as The Donnas, Fishbone, Unwritten Law, among other bands, took to the one of the six stages. Over 50 bands are playing through 2 a.m. with Ozzy Osbourne headlining--his first time back playing the Strip in years.

Sunset Strip Music Fest Free for L.A. City, County Firefighters

A lot of thank-yous, hugs and gratitude has been given to firefighters this past week in light of the recent wildfires, most notably the Station Fire. With that said, Sunset Strip Music Festival organizers today announced that they are allowing free admittance to Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County Firefighters with proper ID into the festival on Saturday when the street closes. Some 40 bands will take the outdoor and indoor-club stages from 2 p.m. to around 9 p.m. (with shows continuing indoors until around 2 a.m.). Headliners include Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Pepper, The Donnas, Fishbone, Unwritten Law, Kottonmouth Kings, Shiny Toy Guns, Shwayze and LMFAO (see a full list here). Tickets are selling at $39.50 pre-sale, $50 at the door.

Ozzy at the Top! Set Times Announced for Sunset Strip Music Festival

Organizers with the Sunset Strip Music Festival just announced the line-up for the festival's third and final day, which includes closing the famous stretch of Sunset Boulevard for for the first time ever. Headliner Ozzy Osbourne takes one of the stages at 8 p.m., following performances by Korn, LMFAO and others. The Roxy and Cat Club have shows for nearly 12 hours straight, with shows also at the Key Club and Whiskey. Here's the full schedule of events for Saturday, September 12th:

Festival Watch: Taking the Sunset Strip Back by Closing the Street Down

Santa Monica Boulevard sees two huge streets closures a year: Halloween and Gay Pride, both of which that draw hundreds of thousands of people. But for the first time the Sunset Strip is getting its due in a week and a half. "The street has never been closed for something like this, this is a first," explained an excited Nic Adler, the tech savvy owner of The Roxy and one of the Sunset Strip Music Festival organizers.

Tonight: Community Meeting for Sunset Strip Fest Street Closures

Tonight is the second of two community meetings Sunset Strip Music Festival organizers are outreaching the immediate surrounding community about the first ever street closure of the Sunset Strip for a day long music festival. On Saturday, September 12 for 24 hours starting at 7 a.m., the famous drag will be shut down from Doheny to San Vicente. The first meeting bought out less than a dozen people, who were "amazingly positive," according to Nic Adler, owner of The Roxy and one of the festival organizers. He said no access to homes will be completely cut off, but most questions were geared to those basic type of logistics.

WeHo Thinks Soho is a No-No

Some residents of West Hollywood and neighboring Beverly Hills are in an uproar about the British-import members-only club Soho, which is poised to open up on the penthouse level of the Luckman Plaza on the Sunset Strip. Those opposing the club fear that it will lead to excessive noise, crowds, and traffic in the area, not to mention increased paparazzi presence aiming to snap a goldmine shot of one of the club's exclusive members.

Remember Motely Crue? Sure you do. So do the thousands who packed arenas around the country to catch Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, and Mick Mars doing what they do (due?) for this summer's Crue Fest 2: The White Trash Circus. LAist fave protographer, and Tommy Lee's pal, Drew "Rukes" Ressler joined the tour to catch a dose of the 1980s Sunset Strip. And yes, Pam Anderson is still smoking hot.

Sunset Strip Music Fest Announces Line-Up & Street Closures

Now in its second year, the Sunset Strip Music Festival in West Hollywood announced yesterday that the event has evolved from a series of concerts in nearby venues to a full on street festival with two stages in addition to the strip's indoor venues.

After five very long months, nude dancing finally returns to the Sunset Strip tonight. The Body Shop, which was heavily damaged as a result of an electrical fire, will open its doors and dusts off the poles for the first time since that December 4th blaze.

Elmer Valentine, the man credited for putting the Sunset Strip on the map, died in his sleep on Wednesday. In 1960, he opened PJ's on the Strip and then the Whisky A Go-Go. After that he helped open the Rainbow Bar & Grill and the Roxy next door.

A fire at the landmark strip club breaks out this morning and memories, jokes and traffic complaints in 140 characters or less ensued.

The Rainbow Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip kicked off the Halloween festivities early Wednesday night. Manager Tony kept the vibe cool, the drinks were flowing and the costumes were interesting. Late-night munchies, especially pizza, are always popular at The rainbow. Of course, there was plenty of hard partying and skimpily-dressed hot chicks. It is the Rainbow, after all.

After over 100 calls to police, 44 arrests and a general bummer in quality of life over the last year (plus a murder last year), a West Hollywood Councilman is proposing to revoke the House of Blues Sunset Strip location's business license, according to the WeHoNews. Councilmember John Heilman introduced the motion that will be debated tonight.

We gotta love when our pals in the gaming industry invite us to check out their latest suite of titles. Since the season is creeping slowly upon us various companies like to invite the press to various events to check out some games for a pre-holiday push, and with free booze and food you can bet LAist was there. This week’s event was held at the Standard in Hollywood by our buddies at Namco/Bandai, publishers of such big named titles as Soul Calibur IV and Tekken and classics like Pac-Man, and Galaga. The night was filled with mine shaft rides, cheerleading, and ninja slashing, all within the confines of the swanky Sunset Strip hotel. Check out more pics and reviews after the jump.

Nic Adler grew up at The Roxy. His father, Lou Adler, opened the club the year Nic was born. He would spend his afternoons after school at the club and grew to dislike the rock music it became so famous for spotlighting.

The Sunset Strip in West Hollywood is notoriously known for its high parking prices. As the Sunset Strip Music Festival approaches, we decided to see to test Sunset Strip business owner's claims of the myth of high priced parking. On a short drive down the famous boulevard, especially on a weekend night, you'll see signs for parking: $15, $20 and various flag wavers who won't announce the high parking price until you're already pulled into their driver way.

Over the last couple of weeks, the scene at the Viper Room has been changing -- bartenders were let go, one of the bookers is gone, and now the internal publicist and talent buyer announced a seemingly abrupt departure. Former publicist Annie Geyer writes in an e-mail:

Everyone loves (great music) or loves to hate (parking for local residents, admission) the annual Sunset Junction Street Festival, which hits Silver Lake come this August 23 and 24. And this year's schedule so far is shaping up to be quite excellent: Cold War Kids, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Issac Hayes, Kinky, Broken Social Scene and The Black Keyes (there's still a whole lot of TBAs).

Harry Morton, son of famed Hard Rock hotelier Peter Morton, is no longer content with opening crudely-named margarita bars. No, the Li-Lo-lovin' entrepreneur has decided to purchase the infamous Sunset Strip club The Viper Room: with plans to franchise, of course. While the Viper Room has only been a part of the Strip since 1993, it immediately rocketed to infamy when River Phoenix collapsed and died of a heroin overdose outside the club in the fall of that same year.

The City of West Hollywood's Planning Commission met the other night to discuss the Standard Hotel's request to extend their poolside hours to 1:30 a.m. from the current weekend midnight closing (closes at 10 p.m. on weekdays), keeping the hotel's poolside bar competitive with other Sunset Strip nightlife options. B-Side Blog attended the meeting to support the idea, but left the meeting fuming. He was the first to speak during public comment:

... as I wrapped up my little speech, something came over me. I just felt the need to be... snarky. I told the Commission that the Sunset Strip has been around for decades. People who move next door and complain about the noise, well, that's like moving next to a dumpster and complaining about the smell. ZING!
Then came the homeowners, who of course were not in favor of the extra weekend hour and a half. This is where it gets good:

Acoustice performance of "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs

If tonight's slim pickings in the music scene had an official theme, it would fall into Western/Country. In mid-country, House of Blues, Sunset Strip, is hosting a night of insane Psychobilly (punk, meet rockabilly). The Southlands of Long Beach finds the baritone country rock sounds of Brad Johnson at Cowboy Country and to the north in the Valley, the straight ahead country rockabilly Jeffrey Michaels visits The Cowboy Palace Saloon.

Though hardly a mainsteam name, George Hickenlooper has managed to carve out a long filmmaking career full of varied and fascinating work. From documentaries (.

Despite all the competition that's around it and new clubs that are constantly popping up, the Roxy has continued to be a major player in the LA rock club scene. It was just a year ago yesterday that the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a rockin show at the classic venue - and not only was LAist there, but we gave out a dozen free tickets to lucky wieners. Keeping the hope alive, the...

In a show of good will that we don't even think the firefighters got, the world famous Roxy on the Sunset Strip will be opening its doors to the WGA writers throughout the strike, LAist has just learned. In support of the writer’s strike, The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood is opening its legendary doors to all members of the Writers Guild of America. Simply presenting a membership card will allow all guild members...
