I'm thankful for my family, even when they're "challenging." I'm thankful for my husband, who for some reason has signed on to sleep beside me, watch lots of tv, do the dishes and read every draft (even though he won't see movies more than once.) I'm thankful to be lucky enough to pursue my passion, so few people have that luxury! I'm thankful for Los Angeles, where the sky is big and the horizon...

Even Flat Stanley pays his Orange Line fare. The Daily News has an idea. We're not so much into it, but here is how it goes. While Metro contracts with LA County Sheriff's, the LAPD has a man who knows something about enforcing ticketless travelers on transit systems and he happens to be top cop Chief William Bratton. Some will remember that he became famous for his "broken windows" theory that enforced smaller crimes...

Imagine a day when the Purple Line "subway to the sea" and Expo Line to Culver City (and eventually to Santa Monica) are a reality. Two rail lines running parallel from Downtown to the ocean -- are we mad men or what? But what about traveling north-south? Enter the Crenshaw/Prairie Transit Corridor:The Crenshaw/Prairie Transit Corridor extends approximately 10 miles north from Wilshire Boulevard, south to El Segundo Boulevard, east to Arlington Avenue and west to...

Need a reason to ride Metro? Tonight you can catch a bus or subway to Hollywood and surface to find Ladytron about to rock your socks off. Global Inheritance, a multi-faceted non-for-profit (also involved in this weekend's Swerve Fest) is back with their second in a series of Public Displays of Affection. Last October's inaugural PDA event fully vindicated the subways-are-fun philosophy lifestyle -- with DJ's, dancing, and a live set from Secret Machines....

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week!

This totally made my our last Thursday night. If it were only legal to busk on subways. Or at least in stations. Too bad it's not. He made some handsome pay in the 15 minutes we were with him and the guy "booing" offered to sell us drugs. Then there was the guy who busted out "only in LA" as he danced. Rock on... This blog talks a lot about riding the busses and subways and being Green, but some of us drive and aren't ashamed. Further, Los Angeles loves its car culture and it's fine time that we take pride in who we REALLY are. As we drive our cars proudly, there comes the times when we have to park them. Last week I was shocked and amused when the writer of the busblog clued LAist readers...

- According to the LA Times, people who live next to trains and subways do not use them. - Eek! "From July 1 of 2006 to June 30 of this year, only 3.21 inches of rain fell in downtown Los Angeles — the lowest precipitation level since records started being kept in the 1880s." - After 80 mph driving and weaving on the Hollywood Freeway in March, actress Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill, Independence Day)...

Even though you might be at work, today is Martin Luther King Day.

Over the weekend, the anonymous "scribes" at Martini Republic voiced a complaint common to many: "The City of LA’s continued shakedown of its own citizens continues apace. The foto-tickets cost about $365, and are very tough to fight (a day off work, a drive to Compton), even though cops snicker when they see that one has popped up in your life: 'Those lights are almost always wrong,' they say." Will someone explain to me...

Under the Influence of Giants @ Key Club

We like it when people get their camera and ask each other questions and then put it on YouTube and then email us at thelaist at gmail.com and show us the interview.

LAist gets good seats to shows. This week we went to a lot of gigs. Next week we will go to even more.

For some reason there are hella shows happening tonight so lets get right to it

Coachella, the 100-plus-degree Woodstock of the West has announced its 2006 lineup. As rumors had predicted, Depeche Mode will perform in the unofficial "I love the 80s" slot. We're surprised that rumors of Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine reuniting haven't proved true. Maybe concert organizers are holding back a few "surprise guests" to goose ticket sales down the line.

LAist dutifully got decked out last night in our latest hipster gear to check out the Subways at Cinespace. It happened to coincide with DJ Steve Aoki’s birthday party. What did this mean? Mayhem at the door until the doormen had the brilliant idea to only have one line instead of the Hollywood Three that seems to form all the time (one for the every-man, one for the kinda-special and one for whom no rules apply). It didn’t help that Cinespace had a private party until 11pm and only started letting people in at 11:30. But once the line started really moving you could hear a collective sigh of relief from the scenesters as they shuffled their way to the door.

LAist loves this photo so much, we just couldn't bring ourselves to crop it. Anyway, if you didn't catch The Subways last night for free at Spaceland we've got two pairs of tickets for their performance tonight at Cinespace (tickets are $5 for general public. It is also Steve Aoki's birthday party tonight so Cinespace will get to capacity...probably before 11). We've also got a free mp3 for you to download to check out their music: Rock and Roll Queen.

We've recently surrendered to the abyss that is public transit in LA. We're adept users of mass transit, having logged in some serious train, bus, and streetcar time in some of North America's biggest cities. And it's hard to explain to people outside of our fair metropolis what it's like to use the MTA here on a regular basis. Sure, our subways are much cleaner than New York's--of course they're 100 years younger, too. And we all can agree that by and large, LA is a driver's town, and deliberately so. So naturally the city's subway users are behind the times on subway etiquette. It's gotten so bad lately that we're ready to speak up about it.
