Pencil This In: Multimedia Animation at REDCAT, The Moth's Westside StorySLAM

Tonight at 8:30 pm, REDCAT hosts the world premiere of filmmaker Christine Panuska’s and spoken word artist Alberto Araiza’s Mosca and the Meaning of Life. The multimedia piece has animated characters leaping off the screen and joining a live performance. The program also includes other films by Panushka, as well as an excerpt of Biting the Pillow, a performance by Araiza. Both artists will be in attendance at tonight’s performance. Tickets: $9, students $7 and CalArts students, faculty and staff $5.

Yes, technically the above title is grammatically incorrect. And, depending on your level of education and OCD, you might have a hard time getting past it and on to the rest of this piece. But that’s OK, we’re all a little different, and LA’s The Moth seeks to embrace that fact, while finding the linking commonalities in us all.

Pourtal wine bar kicks off The Imbiber’s Ultimate Playmate Fantasy Wine Tour tonight from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. It’s a flight of eight wines inspired by eight of history’s most iconic Playmates, from Marilyn Monroe to Anna Nicole Smith. Join “The Imbiber” Dan Dunn, booze writer and Playboy.com’s nightlife columnist, with a few of his friends: Featured Playmate Lisa Semler (Miss September 1980), whom Dunn paired with a selection from her family’s winery in Malibu, will make a special appearance to autograph special-edition bottles of the 2001 Semler Cabernet. Playboy model Andrea Lowell, host of the Playboy Radio Morning Show on Sirius/XM, will also be on hand to pour a special tasting of Waterbrook Melange 2005.

Oscar-winning singer-composer-pianist Randy Newman screens the John Ford film How Green Was My Valley tonight at 7:30 pm at the Skirball Center. There’s a Q&A with Newman before the film. Tickets are $10; $6 for members and $6 for full-time students.

Pencil This In: Steve Martin Plucks it Up for the LA Public Library

Steve Martin’s playing the banjo tonight at 8 pm to raise money for the Los Angeles Public Library. The comedian-bluegrass musician will be in conversation with Dave Barry to launch the ALOUD at L. A. LIVE series. Held at L.A. LIVE’s Club Nokia, Martin will be performing songs from his musical debut CD, The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. The Steep Canyon Rangers band will appear with Martin and the CD’s producer, John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder) will join the group on stage during the performance. Tickets are $25-$250.

Heeb Magazine brings seven-minute Jewish stories by Joanna Angel, Lizzy Cooperman, Evan Kleiman, Jon Korn, Ben Kronberg, Eric D. Weingrad and the accordion playing of Adam Shenkman to the M Bar stage tonight from 8-9:30 pm. The event’s hosted by Marc Evan Jackson.
