Your Los Angeles Kings, looking to bolster attendance, have finally decided to direct some money into getting some talent on the ice this season. No, they aren’t looking to pick up some superstar NHLers to fill out their anemic lineup. I’m talking about management’s decision to put time and energy into hiring “Ice Girls” for the home games this year. Monday, September 8th at 6PM, the (dis)organization will be holding open auditions at Staples......

On Wednesday, the city of Seattle found out that their SuperSonics would be packing their bags and leaving for Oklahoma City. Thanks to owner Clay Bennett, in 2008-09 there will be no pro basketball in Seattle for the first time in 41 years. "He drained the Sonics' joy out of Seattle," said Seattle Times' columnist Jerry Brewer of Bennett. Cheer up Seattle. It's not all gloom and doom. Some good news for the city arrived......

"The Lakers just stunk. They trailed by as much as 24 points in the fourth quarter but managed to get within four points in the final seconds of the game," said LAist Sports Editor Jimmy Bramlett in LAst Night's Action. However, "at least Lakers fans were able to deliver the beat down that there team couldn't," a post at FanIQ notes. "Some Celtics fan showed up at the Staples Center in a jersey and......

It started as SB 1771, a bill that would implement a program teaching homeowners how to navigate through the current mortgage crisis. Then, all of the sudden, it was about the NFL in the City of Industry. It may seem tricky, but that's the game when it comes to "spot bills," or placeholders with text and intentions that may be the goal or not. Developer Ed Roski Jr., owns 600 acres of land in Industry......

With one week to go in the regular season, your Los Angeles Kings find themselves in last place in the NHL. With three games left, the Kings are two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have also played one less game. Kings, your pathetic fate is in your own gloved hands. Go out there and give it your all. Make us proud… Lose those last three games! That’s right. Lose! There’s no pride in......

For the third time in less than a year, nu-metal/rock/rap powerhouse Linkin Park, blew through Los Angeles. Bringing their now familiar sound to the sold-out Staples Center, co-frontmen Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda screamed, sang and rapped their way through a blistering hour and a half set. More Pics after the jump.........

Reeve Oliver plays Tuesday nights at the Key Club this month | Photo via their MySpace Tuesdays are usually slow nights in LA for music and as bands prep to head Texas-way for SXSW, we'll probably see even fewer choices like tonight. But fewer doesn't mean worse. Mountain Goats and Jeffrey Lewis (great video below) play at the Troubadour tonight (and tomorrow), Working For A Nuclear Free City is back with another concert, this......

All photos by Kelly C. Gallamore for LAist. The Los Angeles Avengers kicked off this weekend with a comeback win over the New Orleans VooDoo, marking the ninth straight season we've had pro football back in the City of Angels. Last year the Avengers finished second in the American Western division and won their wild card round of the Arena Football League playoffs. This year, coach Ed Hodgkiss thinks they ... could ... go......

Blazers 82, Clippers 80 - Portland blew a 14 point lead in Staples Center one night after blowing a 15 point lead on the very same court. This time they were playing the Clippers, so things worked out OK. Los Angeles managed a pathetic 29 points in the first half, but did make a noble effort in the second. Corey Maggette was hot with 32 points, but missed a big shot with eight ticks left.......

I told people not to overlook the Portland Trail Blazers. Historically they have played the Lakers really tough. Even though the Blazers were 32-50 last season, they won the season series against the Lakers last season. So there they were in the first quarter being run out of the Staples Center by the Blazers down 15 points. The Blazers seemed run their offensive sets as if they were in practice, and the Lakers couldn’t get......

Lakers 96, Blazers 83 - Portland made their first 21 free throws so, um, they got that going for them. Otherwise is was show time in Staples Center, with Kobe pouring in 30 along with 21 from Jordan Farmar (equaling a career high) and 15 from insta-hero Pau Gasol. The bearded big man added 10 rebounds for a double-double. Animal style. Los Angeles has won nine in a row and is looking ridiculously good (not......

Celtics 104, Clippers 76 - The NBA's top team won last night in the Staples Center, and it wasn't the Lakers. Boston, now an NBA-best 43-12, was just too much for the Clippers. Chris Kaman sat out once again, dropping LA's record to 1-6 without the big man in their lineup. Sam Cassell was also injured and watched from the bench. Kevin Garnett, one of five Celtics to hit double digits, was recently named by......

Since the recent opening of LACMA's Broad Contemporary (BCAM) a flurry of international eyes have been on Los Angeles, and an ensuing flurry of words have issued forth in review. It seems irresistible to review the Broad without also reviewing the city that houses it, which was precisely the tact taken by Chris Haslam in London's Sunday Times today. It takes Haslam seven paragraphs into his article to even mention the precise reason he......

Lakers 122, Hawks 93 - Atlanta had a bad draw. They were coming into a pumped-up Staples Center that hadn't seen the Lakers play a home game in weeks. They were coming in against a team rejuvenated by Pau Gasol. They were coming in against a Kobe Bryant with something to prove. Before halftime, the Lakers had a 41 point lead. Gasol and Bryant each scored 23. Bryant whacked his hand a couple times and......

Photo by Heath Biter/LAist It might seem hard to believe that tonight’s game between the Phoenix Coyotes and your Los Angeles Kings carries any weight, but it does, and I’ll tell you why. With 21 games left in the season, and a lowly 53 points to their cellar-dwelling name, the Kings would be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with a loss tonight. Not officially of course. After all, only 13 points separate the Kings......

Lakers 117, Timberwolves 92 - The Lakers sent a major sign to the rest of the NBA on their long road trip, finishing with a 7-2 record, acquiring Pau Gasol, and seeing Kobe pour in 29 points last night even with a dislocated finger. Against Minnesota, the Lakers got another solid performance from Gasol, who shot 9-of-11 for 19 points and blocked three shots. The team is off through the All Star game (Sunday) and......

Sunday's Grammy Awards weren't just about honoring the best in music, they were also about supporting environmental awareness and conservancy. And the The Recording Academy® hoped to set the precedent with getting the Grammys to go green. The show itself was produced to have a reduced environmental impact, which, according to their press release, meant that in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) and......

The WGA Board voted unanimously last night to not picket the 50th Grammy Awards, February 10th at Staples Center. If there was an exasperating gasp of relief following the WGA vote, excuse us for missing it. For most of our lifetime the Grammys has done little more than exemplify just how out of touch the so-called mainstream is with Gen x+y's musical taste (with apologies to The Dixie Chicks). The only way this Grammy Awards......

Red Wings 3, Kings 0 - The best hockey team in the NHL was in Staples Center on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for local fans, the worst team in the NHL calls it home. The Kings lost to Detroit for the 17th time in 18 games. Next up, LA hosts Anaheim, then gets some time off for the all star break. That means plenty of rest, since it's not like the Kings will have many......

Lakers 112, Pacers 96 - The purple and gold have won six of seven and 12 of their last 15 games. Against Indiana, several players had big nights. All five starters hit double-digits in scoring, including 26 from Kobe Bryant, 23 from Andrew Bynum, and 22 from Derek Fisher. The Pacers are 0-9 against the Lakers in Staples Center. Spurs 88, Clippers 82 - Manu Ginobili returned from an injury to his left hand and......

The newly reunited Spice Girls hit the stage at the Staples Center for two sold out nights this past Wednesday and Friday. Today's LA Times review says the girls are "thinner and more plastic than ever" and that "the show was even more elaborate and pyro- technic than the British pop group's 1998 L.A. debut at the Forum." However, the article goes on to say that the spectacle "played more like a Broadway production......

Scattered across Southern California today, the hundreds of fans who left Staples Center well before the game was over should be kicking themselves. Hard. Some wouldn’t blame them - the Dallas Stars were smoking the Kings 4-0, and it was Saturday night so perhaps they had amazing plans for after the game. If it were the latter, I can say with certainty that those postgame appointments should have been blown off or at least......

On June 19, 2000 I was staying at the Radisson Hotel across the street from USC, visiting campus for my freshman orientation. About two miles north on Figueroa Street that night, Kobe Bryant was winning his first championship with the Lakers. I didn't get much sleep. The impromptu parade of cars (Benzos, Civics, low riders, it didn't matter) made my hotel their turnaround point before they looped back to the Staples Center. I've lived in......

It's Halloween and that means it's a big day at CreepyLA.com. Among many stories posted today, an interview about today's holiday with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. How does one do a green Halloween? Fire 1, Galaxy 0 - We happened to be at Chicago-area hotspot Krem last night and saw players from both teams drinking, but for different reasons. The Fire scored in extra time to clinch the final MLS playoff spot and send the Galaxy back to Los Angeles for the year.
