Dude, strange things are afoot in Lakerland. Last night, en route to the Lakers beating the Nuggets 116-99, Kobe Bryant passed the ball. He made shit happen. And then, postgame, with a smile on his face, Kobe spoke in approving terms about his team, citing the fullness of their “passion bucket”. WHO IS THIS MAN?

Lakers 112, Pacers 96 - The purple and gold have won six of seven and 12 of their last 15 games. Against Indiana, several players had big nights. All five starters hit double-digits in scoring, including 26 from Kobe Bryant, 23 from Andrew Bynum, and 22 from Derek Fisher. The Pacers are 0-9 against the Lakers in Staples Center.

Ducks 4, Kings 3, SO - Southern California's teams are getting to know each other pretty well. After opening the season with two games in London, they now face each other in three of their next six games. Last night in Anaheim the Ducks showed signs of life, but blew a two goal lead in the third period. The eventually beat Los Angeles 2-0 in a shoot-out. Spurs 107, Lakers 92 - The Lakers are...

Will Cleveland complete a giant turnaround on the shoulders of LeBron James? Will San Antonio continue their NBA legacy with another championship? We don't have a stinkin' clue, but if you make the best prediction LAist will give you a box of 2006-2007 Topps Full Court Basketball Cards. The box contains 108 cards, including two relic cards and one that's been autographed by two different NBA stars. If you haven't heard, it seems like everybody...

Dodgers 5, Pirates 4 - Brad Penny was taxed for four runs in six innings, but Los Angeles cashed in with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to keep his record at 7-1. Andre Ethier hit the two-run shot that put the Dodgers ahead for good. Grady Little watched most of the game from the clubhouse after arguing with the ump in the fourth. He's the fifth major league manager to...

Current Record: 34-36, 3rd Pacific, 8th West Last Week: While the LA hoops world has been focused on the Bruins’ repeat run to the Final Four and Kobe’s insane scoring binge, the Clippers have quietly found their groove at the best possible time. Over the last two weeks since the last CW, the Clips finished their pivotal road-trip 3-3, which may not seem terribly remarkable, but considering the team’s road woes throughout the season, it...

Spurs 93, Clipper 84 - With all the talk about the winning streak from that team in Texas, it's easy to get confused. That's because the Mav's 17 game streak is over, but San Antonio is on their own run of 13. Los Angeles was the latest victim, and in convincing fashion. The Spurs had 18 points from the charity stripe compared to just 3 for the Clippers, who also gave up 22 points off...

Current Record: 29-33, 3rd Pacific, 8th West Last Week: Let’s see, the Clippers lost all three games they played by an average of 14 points. But with the madness going on in the NBA this season, the Clippers continue to hold on to the last playoff spot in the West, despite their best efforts to mail it in. They even inched closer to the sixth spot by losing one less game than the Lakers last...

A Word Or 62: I hope to get a hold of at least a couple pints of this new Ben & Jerry's flavor. I am perennially pissed that I can never make it to the local B&J store to get the Pumpkin flavor so I know that this is all a conspiracy. Hopefully this will make red staters boycott B&J which just means - more for me!!! [Note that a lot of late night...

Pick of the Day Lemmy's new band The Head Cat headlines The Knitting Factory tonight. The Motorhead frontman has secured Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom and Lonesome Spurs guitarist Danny B. Harvey and turned it wayyyy down -- for him, that is. Opening is Bauhaus' Daniel Ash on the wheels of steel, kicking off the night with Speedbuggy. Single, lonely men rejoice. When the curtains come up near Broadway for the Lakers and New York Knicks tonight, the role of Kobe Bryant will be played by Maurice Evans. Nobody likes to pay Broadway ticket prices to see the understudy, but the NBA has suspended Kobe for tonight’s game in New York because of his “intentional” elbowing of Manu Ginobli of the San Antonio Spurs with 2.7 seconds left in Sunday’s game. Watch the video for yourself --...

Ducks 4, Stars 1 - After taking more than a week off, the Ducks returned to the ice looking HEALED! Three key players were back after suffering from injuries before the All Star break. The fresh bodies helped Anaheim recover from their recent skid and play more like their impressive season start. Spurs 96, Lakers 94, OT - The Lakers led most of the game, but not when it counted the most. Tied at 80...

Lakers 100, Spurs 96 - The Lakers opened a three game road trip by surviving a late San Antonio rally. Both teams suffered from ball control issues. The Lakers dropped the rock 17 times (7 by Kobe), and the home team had 19 turnovers resulting in 25 points. Before the game, Kobe threw a lot of cliches at the press about getting back to basics. While the turnovers didn't live up to the expectations,...

A Word or 33: Is anyone watching "Idol"? I can't believe it's back, I just haven't accepted it. Maybe when Diana Ross comes on as a consultant, perhaps after she sues "Dreamgirls," then I might consider it. The Key Club gets top billing tonight because The Bronx headlines a benefit for Wheels for Humanity, which supplies wheelchairs. Also on the bill : Chuck Ragan (ex-Hot Water Music) with members of Flogging Molly, and some rock star karaoke. Everyone will probably be there for either the ice skating or Great Northern, but The Submarines came out with a haunting CD that we played all summer long. Go downtown and ice skate from...

Spurs 103, Clippers 81 - San Antonio has a love/hate relationship with Los Angeles. Four days ago, they routed the Clippers at home (love). On Sunday they lost to the Lakers at the Staples Center (hate), then stayed in LA on Monday and smacked the tar out of the Clippers (more love). They sprinted out to a 16 point lead in the first 7:41 and never looked back. Tony Parker scored 21 points to...

Sure, the Lakers are 19 games into their season, but so far it has been the equivalent of a lazy Sunday morning. They've barely had to leave home (only four games away from Staples Center, like only leaving the house to grab the paper), and they've faced the second easiest schedule in the league so far, like making a cup of Pete's to sip while reading said paper. The young team got to gel...

Lakers 106, Hawks 95 - The Lakers starting shooting guard had 22 points in 40 minutes. Not bad, considering he wasn't named Kobe. Maurice Evans had a carrer high while filling in for the injured star, who was still nursing a sprained ankle. Luke Walton contributed 25, a career high, and Justin Farmer had 15, also a career high. Spurs 111, Clippers 82 - San Antonio had five players score double digits, Manu Ginobili...

Maybe the Clippers aren’t ready to make a championship run quite yet.

Few sports announcers have paid their dues like Joel Meyers. This guy seems to show up everywhere. Listening to the NFL playoffs on the radio? There's Joel Meyers. Watching the Padres-Cubs go to 12 innings at midnight on ESPN2? There's Joel Meyers. Wake up to watch Kansas-Iowa State Big 12 football on Fox Sports Net? There's Joel Meyers. Inadvertantly picked up an MLB Extra Innings Tigers-White Sox game from Comerica Park on Fox Sports Detroit? There's Joel Meyers. Come to bar, and find a Spurs-Hawks game on TV from some local San Antonio station? There's Joel Meyers. Find yourself watching dog frisbee, senior golf, or college swimming? There's Joel Meyers.

Don't get us wrong, Phil Jackson is one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, and we're happy to have him back. But does anyone else get the sense that this could easily turn out disastrous?

The Lakers aren't in the playoffs.
