Japan defeats South Korea 5-3 (10). This was one of the most thrilling games I've seen in quite some time. On the back of Ichiro Suzuki's four-hit night, the last one a game winning double in the top of the 10th inning, Japan managed to salvage some dignity after not winning gold in Beijing. While both teams had defeated each other twice during pool play in the Classic Japan won it when it counted. Being Korean it was hard to watch the end of the game, but I'm content in knowing that we're reigning Olympic gold medalists.

A host of Eastern European countries and South Korea were accepted into the U.S. Visa Waiver Program today, meaning visitors from these countries will be permitted an unlimited number of travelers to visit the U.S. without a Visa. And that's good news for Los Angeles' tourism, says Mayor Villaraigosa: “Los Angeles already enjoys a strong community of nearly 400,000 citizens of Korean descent, but this new program will strengthen our economic and cultural ties with South Korea to unprecedented new heights." His office thinks the program could bring an additional 200,000 tourists and $60 million in visitor spending to Los Angeles within a year. The program will go into effect next month.

When we spotted a place called Paris Baguette on Western near 1st Street, we naturally thought French pastries. But that's because we've never been to South Korea. There, Paris Baguette is a well-known chain, about as French as french fries. Enchanted by the cross-cultural oddness, we were lured inside. We like the little boxes for your pastries, the fancy self-serve, the extra-polite staff in bakery outfits. We tried the enormous triangle toast, somewhere between sponge cake and bread with a crispy sugar shell, and the delicious thing we forgot the name of because we immediately began calling it the red bean bear claw. Judging by English-language blogs about Korea, Paris Baguette is a step above Dunkin' Donuts -- but not a big step. It certainly isn't making the best croissants in LA, but it's got the best darn red bean bear claw around.

Never fear Bruins! If you find yourself in Asia and desperate for some of the good ol' blue and gold, you can go to one of the 20 UCLA stores open in South Korea and China (and, soon, Japan) and pick up your alumni tee or cap. We're not sure if they're stocking face paint and foam fingers yet, though.
