Warm Temps Close Mammoth Mountain, Cables Taken off Half Dome

Mother Nature is taunting us as she does best. After an earlier-than-expected season opening for Mammoth Mountain on Friday, officials had to close the popular skiing spot down as warmer temperatures made a return. "After a big storm earlier this week and great skiing and riding on Friday, record breaking warm temperatures rolled in, wreaking havoc on our snow in the process," a statement from the resort read. However, a storm in the near future could bring back the snow and lower temperatures.

Mammoth Mountain to Open This Friday

After receiving at least two feet of snow over the past 24 hours, Mammoth Mountain officials decided to move their opening date from November 12 to this Friday, they announced this morning. It is the second earliest opening for the resort ever.

Storm Dumps Snow on Mammoth Mountain, Will Ski Season Open Early?

Ah yeah, signs of the upcoming ski season! Today's storm over California is dumping snow in the Sierras up north. If it stays, we might be seeing an earlier ski season than expected. Curently, Mammoth Mountain is scheduled to open on November 12th, but depending on what happens over night, there is potential to see the popular skiing spot open earlier. Officials with the ski area say it's been snowing hard since 8 a.m. and about a foot has fallen in the main lodge area.

Local Ski Resort Postpones Opening Day

Temperatures warmed up overnight in the Wrightwood area where Mountain High Ski Resort hoped to open doors today. Snow making last night was "fairly marginal" as temperatures stayed above 34 degrees. Freezing or below temperatures are generally need to make snow.

Cold Front in L.A., but Snow in the Mountains!!

Yes, snow. Yay! About eight inches fell over the weekend on Mammoth Mountain, signaling the possible start of ski season (they hope to officially open in November). A little more locally, the colder weather has enabled two ski resorts in the San Bernardino Mountains to make snow. "Mountain High Resort, in Wrightwood, has made snow the past two nights and may open a beginner-level trail Wednesday," reported the Press-Enterprise. Snow Valley Mountain Resort in Running Springs has made snow, but no plans to open have been announced yet.

By 9:30 a.m., one half hour before opening time Saturday morning, a few rows of the LA Zoo's parking lot were already filled with cars. As families filled the ticket lines, snow donated by Union Ice began to fall onto four exhibits in the back of the park where the bears, tigers, leopards and takins live.

62 Years Ago, a Factory Explodes; 65 Years Ago, Snow in Downtown

It was yesterday in 1944 when the LA Times reported "snow flurries and a violent 10-minute hailstorm [that] laid a white canopy over most of Los Angeles." City Hall from First and Spring is shown here to the right.

Today's Weather: Scattered Showers for Rest of the Day

The heavier showers that poured over Los Angeles this morning have moved on to the Eastern part of Los Angeles County. A group of scattered showers should hit the area in a few hours and could douse the city sporadically throughout the day. Around 7 a.m. this morning there was a cloud to ground lightening strike, said Stuart Seto, a Weather Specialist from the National Weather Service. Later tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of rain and tomorrow should be mostly sunny. The snow level currently sits around 3500 feet with new snow precipitation at 4000 feet.

Stormwatch: Snow Closes the Grapevine, SoCal Soaked

The storm we were anticipating showed up early this morning, and is dumping rain and snow on Southern California.

Batten Down the Hatches!

The weather gods spared our weekend, but come tonight, the dry spell is over (and no, that's not a post-Valentine's Day nookie reference). We're talking rain, and lots of it.

Snow in the Mountains Brings Fun, but with Warnings

The recent weather has left the snow pack at over forty inches in the higher elevations of the San Gabriel Mountains, according to Forest Service officials in the 680,000 acre Angeles National Forest. And at lower elevation levels, snow is over a foot with more expected this weekend.

Traffic is a Complete Mess Tonight

The much needed rain for bitch-thirsty California is a good thing, but it has its consequences. Shortly before 5 p.m., the California Highway Patrol was reporting 57 incidents in LA County, which is higher than usual for even Friday at rush hour. A lot of the crashes are injury collisions with "rain as a contributing factor," one officer told us.

Storms to Bring Rain & Snow to Region Beginning Friday

After a short break from last week's storms, the Los Angeles region tomorrow could be soaked in the first of two weekend storms expected to quench some of the regions' thirst. "We're looking at two back-to-back systems," explained Meteorologist Eric Boldt at the National Weather Service. "One is coming in Friday afternoon or evening to the Los Angeles area and will go into Saturday morning." That storm could bring an inch or more and then on Sunday, a larger storm is expected to hit. "It will probably be double the amount of rainfall," Boldt said. As for snow levels, the first storm will bring snow up to the 3,500 foot elevation level. The second storm could bring one to three feet of snow to 5,000 feet.

It (Almost) Snowed in Los Angeles Today

Residents in Porter Ranch woke up this morning to a light layer of snow above them in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. It was only a few months ago when a wildfire raged through these hills. Ahhhh, such is life in the Valley.

Snow Causing Traffic in Grapevine, Angeles Forest & 14 Fwy

Welcome back, snow! As of 11:33 a.m., snow has caused the closure of the Angeles Forest Highway between the foothill communities and Sierra Highway. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol is running traffic breaks in both directions on the Grapevine and the 14 Freeway between Crown Valley to Santiago, according to the City of Santa Clarita's Emergency Information blog.

3rd Storm Hitting Today, 4th One This Next Weekend

It's finally starting to feel like a (Southern California) winter. As for this weekend and today: "Snow levels were expected to drop to 3,500 feet as up to 9 inches of snow falls over the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, along with rain at lower elevations and gusty winds. The storm was expected to leave the area sometime after midnight, with another storm expected by next weekend," finds the LA Times.

Shots likes these make us want to go hiking right this moment. Just a few miles north of Altadena in the Angeles National Forest, LAist Featured Photographer (from Flickr) Matt McGrath took this shot last spring when the water flow was fairly high in the Arroyo Seco. But with a good amount of snow arriving early this year, chances are that water will be running soon.

Southwest Flight 688 on its way to Los Angeles was taxiing at Chicago's Midway Airport around 9 a.m. yesterday morning when it's right main gear got stuck in the snow on the shoulder of the taxiway. As the day went on, temperatures in Chicago warmed up drastically causing dense fog to cover the region. And then what happened? All flights at Midway were canceled shortly after 6 p.m. ending in 80 canceled flights. Over at the city's main airport, around 400 flights were canceled. If all this trouble has you stuck somewhere out there, The Travel Doctor keeps his list of airports with free Wi-Fi updated.

Break out those umbrellas and get ready for the return of yet another rainy and snowy (depending on where you are) day. From 7 a.m. this morning through tonight 9 p.m., the National Weather Service has issued a "winter storm warning" for the area. That means a cold front (feel the 51 degrees?) will bring showers (raining in the Valley right now), gusty winds and a new pack of snow at 6,000 feet (and lower than 5,000 feet tonight). Enjoy the break from the sun! Some predict the weather will last through Christmas.

More rain? More snow? It's expected to his us again on Monday and then possibly on Christmas day. The National Weather Service is saying that a storm is heading towards Southern California and could drop nearly an inch across the region. Snow level will start at 7,000 feet elevation but lower to 5,000.

It rained down here and it snowed up there. It's time for morning surfing and some nighttime skiing.

As temperatures rise to between the upper 50s and mid-60s today, at least two critical freeways in Southern California remain closed due to snow and ice.

To put this in perspective, the San Fernando Valley's elevation varies between about 250 and 1200 ft, so says Wikipedia. Between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., tomorrow, a frost advisory--meaning at least two hours of subfreezing temperatures--has been issued for the San Fernando Valley and other areas in the region, according to the National Weather Service who says there "is the potential for increasing rainfall intensities and even a slight chance of thunderstorms. Some of these showers could produce bursts of heavy rainfall." For recent burn areas below the snow level, the flash flood watch remains until at least 8 p.m. tonight.

ABC7 has a live webcam showing snow falling somewhere in (or maybe near) Malibu, though it appears to be in the hills somewhere above the beachside city. This come just as the History Channel is airing a show (yes, right at this moment) about how global warming could trigger a small ice age. Hrmmmm.... ice age 2.0 begins!

Around 2 p.m., Caltrans shut down Interstate 5 between Parker Rd. in Castaic and the Grapevine to the north, cutting off the main route between Central and Southern California.

Snow in Santa Clarita? As the snow level dips to 2,000 ft., Caltrans has closed the 14 Freeway for 26 miles between Soledad Canyon in Santa Clarita to Palmdale Blvd in Palmdale for an unknown duration as they clear snow. This arctic storm has brought a good amount of snow across the region: 7 inches have fallen at Mount Wilson, 6 inches in Frazier Park, up to 8 inches in Wrightwood with an estimated 12 inches expected in some areas as the day continues, according to the National Weather Service. UPDATE, 2:50 P.M.: 14 remains closed, 5 and 138 also closed.

Brace yourselves, and bundle up: Another storm's a-comin'!

Monday's storm that dumped a ton of water over the region has gone and left, leaving us with frigid temperatures with lows even in the 30s for some Los Angeles neighborhoods. Today is calmer, but a second and colder storm is expected tonight. Prepare that hot cocoa, put in a good movie and cuddle up under some blankets.

It was rainy down here, but it snowed in the mountains to the north of Los Angeles County. About an hour north in Frazier Park, children threw snowballs at each other. A little closer, but with parts closed to the public, snow fell heavily in the Angeles Creat area north of La Canada where this Caltrans truck (picture above) is seen plowing snow on Highway 2.
