Free Skating at Pershing Square Tomorrow Morning

If you're free tomorrow morning and want to try something fun for free, check out KTLA's "Free Ice Skating Party to Kick Off The Holidays" which happens 7-11 tomorrow morning at the Downtown on Ice rink at Pershing Square, according to Blogdowntown. "The station's Morning News will be doing a live show from the Downtown park," so you'll have a chance to fall on your rear on the local morning show.

Map of the Day: Outdoor Skating Rinks in Los Angeles

'Tis the season to pretend it's winter in Los Angeles. One surefire way to get into the spirit of things is to don a pair of skates and take to the ice for some cold-weather fun. There are a few outdoor skating rinks that you might want to check out in the coming weeks with family and friends, in Santa Monica's Ice, Pershing Square, L.A. Live, Woodland Hills, Redondo Beach, and Thousand Oaks. Here's a map to help you find a rink; you're on your own though if you need help keeping your butt from landing on the ice!

Vision Street Wear Makes A Comeback

The first pair of shoes I ever picked out for myself were the Vision Street Wear classic black high-tops. They were cool, they were skateboarding, and THANK GOD they're gonna start making them again. And a whole boatload of other classic Vision shoes.

LAistory: Tropical Ice Gardens

Every winter, many Angelenos get excited by the novelty of heading downtown to Pershing Square and lacing up their ice skates and gliding along (or falling down on) the rink set up during the holiday season. If you spend enough time in Los Angeles eventually you'll hear someone say their weekend plans include "going to the snow," as if cold weather was a destination. And though we may crank up our heat on some chilly wintry nights, we still wear flip flops on our feet with scarves around our necks around here. So it's actually quite fitting to know that once upon a time, when UCLA's roots were barely sinking into the grounds of a blossoming area called Westwood, there was an outdoor skating rink open year-round for pros and amateurs alike.

Anyone who’s ever wanted a Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle or worried about someone shooting their eye out with one can probably blame A Christmas Story. The movie follows the travails of poor sap Ralphie in his quest for the ultimate BB gun experience. The ArcLight Sherman Oaks is holding a 21+ screening tonight at 7:30 pm.

Tom Hanks told his team in A League of Their Own that there's no crying in baseball, but what about in skateboarding?

The L.A. Derby Dolls introduced a new roller derby team called the Varsity Brawlers to another packed house at the Doll Factory on Saturday night. The new kids in town were welcomed opponents for the battered Fight Crew, who have suffered through a disappointing season plagued by losses and injuries. Fight Crew vented their pent up frustrations by running up the score early and soundly thrashing the Brawlers.

This weekend marks the first ever inter-league meet-up of Derby Dolls here in LA, called Battle on the Bank and our own L.A. Derby Dolls are a big part of the fun and spectacle (last week we chatted with Micki Krimmel, aka Mickipedia, who is a "Baby Doll" on her way to joining the team). It's a banked track tournament featuring skaters from the L.A. Derby Dolls, Team Awesome, San Diego Derby Dolls, TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, Angel City Derby Girls, the OC Rollergirls and the Inland Empire Derby Divas. LAist Featured Photos contributor Michael Zampelli (aka rink_rat) grabbed these amazing shots of the action down at the Dollhouse.

There's the orange men and abundant tattoos and the fashion disasters, but is there a cooler group of people than the roller skaters? Malingering says no....

Pershing Square has once again transformed into a frozen wonderland of twisted ankles and bruised tailbones. This lovely, downtown park spends most of the year as a grassy knoll and concrete potty, but for a few brilliant weeks during the deep freeze of our LA winter, it becomes a glorious, outdoor ice skating rink for the entire city to enjoy. Hockey clinics, open-air movies, community and family events and live music make this a...
