With so many skateboard competitions struggling for national attention, only one has no trouble at all... The Maloof Money Cup. Why is it so loved by skateboarders? Several reasons. First of all, skateboarders are not "extreme sports athletes" they are just skateboarders. Why does ESPN and Mountain Dew want to lump skaters together with motocross and like... hang gliding. The Maloof Money Cup is skateboarding, nothing else.

Vision Street Wear Makes A Comeback

The first pair of shoes I ever picked out for myself were the Vision Street Wear classic black high-tops. They were cool, they were skateboarding, and THANK GOD they're gonna start making them again. And a whole boatload of other classic Vision shoes.

Los Angeles, as a culture, lives by it’s own standards and plays by as many (or as few) rules as money can buy. But with that is the tacit understanding that, on many occasions, it will also die by it’s own shortcomings. As a result, Southern California is and will be the birthplace of many things, but those things will often leave their home to experience greater and more profound success elsewhere.

Crossing the campus from your Econ lecture to your Geology lab can be a pain in the ass, especially when time is tight and you're navigating a sea of student bodies plugged into iPods and hunched over text messages. For some, the solution is as easy as the four wheels of a skateboard.

It was a warm summer day in Carson, and people were jammed like sardines on the grounds of the Home Depot Center. With the festivities sold out Saturday, people were outright giddy walking into the grounds in anticipation for the excitement contained withing.

X Games 14 are in full effect at the Staples Center and Home Depot Center. It’s the time of year when Orange County crap punk bands and their spinoffs see royalties to the xtreme. And it’s the time when I try to understand what’s going on but just score an epic fail with all the jargon and loopdy-doos.

KAYAKING + LA River: Supporters are welcome to watch a group of fearless kayakers navigate the LA River – from the Valley to Long Beach. At 3 pm today, there’s a kick-off ceremony/"launch" at the LA River Headwaters on the overpass @ Owensmouth in Canoga Park. The kayakers will demonstrate to developers and the Army Corps of Engineers that the LA River is a navigable waterway that should be protected and owned by the people of Los Angeles. Here’s a fun fact: our river is one of the most hydraulically modified urban rivers in the world. “Nearly 75 percent of the fifty-two mile long river is enclosed in concrete.”

Has it really been a year since the last Go Skateboarding Day? Well, the world will ride again this Saturday, June 21 at the Venice Skatepark. I'm not sure what events are being planned in the Arctic Circle, but here in LA there's stuff to do. What better way to cool off than a shirtless glide through Venice Beach on your board? Plus, you'd be saving gas! If that's not motivation enough, there's a contest involved with prizes and what not.

The city of Torrance spent a big chunk of change to build the South Bay's largest skate park on Torrance city property. But according to local skaters, the city has not properly maintained it. They do manage to maintain the batting cages and hockey rink that share the property, though. Local skater and mom, Karen Rennie, reports, "Torrance had one of the only wood bowls around- and it is currently closed due to giant holes that could be easily fixed with less than $50.00 worth of wood- yet the holes are still there...a vast majority of the park is fenced off, for what would be only minor repairs."

For your lunch time viewing pleasure, Tyson, the bulldog who can skateboard, surf and pretty much do all the things a surf dude should be able to do. Of course, Tyson is a dog, so that's a little out there. But nonetheless, a man at the dog park this morning tells me he saw this once with his own eyes in Huntington Beach. Whatever floats your boat man....

That's right, two weeks before the grand opening you can get into the brand new Culver City Skate Park on the corner of Duquesne & Jefferson in Culver City. It's open dawn till dusk, but ymmv until the real opening. Friday night they put up the fence, and Saturday the place was jammed with 300 locals trying it out. I dropped by Sunday morning at 8am to check out the Wake n' Skate crew....

In a stunning jailhouse interview, the Newport Beach Daily Pilot spoke with incarcerated former USC star quarterback Todd Marinovich who hinted that the OC is to blame for his recent relapse that lead to his arrest for possession of needles and meth. His path to this arrest started roughly a month ago, when Marinovich said he first relapsed after nearly a year of sobriety. “Sometimes it just happens. I’ll get into a situation where...

I admit it. I am a closeted adrenaline junkie. So when I heard that I would be able to go see the X Games this past weekend if I attended a press event for ASEC (Action Sports Environmental Coalition), I just about wet my pants. Actually, I wet them a little bit. ASEC is an initiative to establish an environmental standard for the action sports industry as a whole, not just for the X...

Aussie Jake Brown decided to drop in on the X Games here in LA. In fact, he dropped 50 feet straight down onto a hard surface, landing so hard that both his shoes popped off of his feet. This is NOT a good video for people with weak stomachs. Amazingly, Jake walked away. We still aren't sure how. By the way, a couple seconds before the crash he actually landed the first 720 ever...

Figures the powerful skateboard lobby would use their muscle to snag the longest day of the year for Go Skateboarding Day. Unfortunately, many of them were out skateboarding and don't tell those of us in ivory towers what's happing down at the half pipe. What's happening is today is the day that we all celebrate this truly southern California fad sport lifestyle, so important we had to mention it twice. Not only is skateboarding...

One of our very favorite Los Angeles historical moments is when Jay Adams and his Dogtown cohort bombed the Bicknell hill in south Santa Monica, inventing modern skateboarding and changing the face of SoCal sports, culture, and fashion. (How many pairs of slip-on Vans do you own?) Salute their totally radical contribution today, and celebrate national Go Skateboarding Day. Get that old Bones Brigade board out of your closet. Roll on down to any...

Angela Boatwright and Patrick O’Dell are two New York-based photographers who are coming to LA for the new exhibit “200 Troubled Teenagers” opening tomorrow night at the Standard Downtown. As teenagers themselves, the two attended the same Columbus, Ohio high school and now they’ve joined forces for an exhibit examining two youth subcultures: skateboarding and heavy metal music. The title of the show isn’t so much about juvenile delinquency but an inspiration from the lyrics...
