A Conversation about Las Vegas with 'SoCal Connected' Correspondent John Ridley

Tonight on an all-new episode of KCET's award-winning news program, SoCal Connected, which airs at 8 p.m., correspondent John Ridley, takes viewers on a tour of the gambling Mecca that reinvented itself during good times only to now face new challenges during a tough economy.

This past weekend, Vegas's own Sam Boyd Stadium was home to the 3rd annual Vegoose music festival which featured a few small-time bands you may have heard of, like Rage Against the Machine, Daft Punk, Muse, Iggy and the Stooges, LAist made the obligatory road trip out to Sin City to bring you some coverage on one of the more succsessful new music fests, (which, by the way, is brought to us by the same people who put on Bonnaroo.) Check out some costumes and environmental shots after the jump, and stay tuned for some interviews, vids, and band pics later this week!

Here's an audio clip of Rose McGowan singing "You Belong To Me" from the soundtrack of Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodriguez. The film opens today as part of the Grindhouse double feature.

The Host - Korean director Joon-ho Bong has created one of the scarier horror films of the year not to mention Korea's most successful domestic release ever. A mutant beast created by U.S. military negligence emerges from Seoul's Han River and snatches the daughter of a vendor who runs a small snack bar on the river's banks. The film is riddled with a sense of urgent dread but Bong also manages to poke fun...

I have a nice friend who hooked me up to see a special screening of the new Borat movie. Not only was we able to get to go to the screening, but we were on "the list" and got to get out of the long line, bypass all the riff-raff and make our way into the theater to take the primo seats behind the super primo seats that were reserved for "PRESS". And let...

Congrats Jennifer who won the Vegoose Contest. It was a random pic (since who really can judge haikus since theyre all beautiful) but this is her entry: a band of horses storms the galactic abyss for a special sauce For the rest of youse, Tom Petty, The Roots, Cat Power (pictured), Phil Lesh, The Black Crowes, Fiona Apple, and many many more will be in Vegas for Halloween Weekend so if you like to...

Hey Rockers, we have a cool contest for you today... Halloween weekend in Las Vegas there will be a two-day rock fest with dozens of bands and a crowd that loves to dress up in wild costumes. And you know the old saying about what happens in Vegas, right? Tom Petty will be headlining, the Mars Volta will be there, the Black Crowes will be there, Fiona Apple will be there, and we want...

So the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." But what happens when Vegas is actually in Santa Monica's Barker Hangar?

work for Rock Finally, a piece of the Pellicano story that's vaguely interesting: Chris Rock hired the dirty detective when a Hungarian model slapped Rock with a paternity claim. Later DNA tests would show that the kid was not his son (or daughter, we're just feeling Michael Jackson this morning). Rock's attorney says they didn't hire Pellicano to do anything illegal: "Let me put it like this: When you hire somebody to fix your TV, you don't necessarily think he's going to hook you up for free cable."

It’s refreshing to see some Los Angeles theatre that has you leave debating what you just witnessed and experienced. ), the anachronistic noir of South Los Angeles brings Larkin (Patrick Burleigh), an LAPD officer, into a dilapidated digital repair shop sketchy of its own existence. The shop’s front man, Meyer (Christopher Allport), is a man living the past as NYC bridge-and-tunnel kid who attempts to mask his erred family life with Patty (Niamh McCormally), Meyer’s wife, a creature void of emotion one moment, grounded to life the next.

Like most other movie goers this weekend, we saw Sin City. We loved it. As unashamed comic book nerds, the idea of a direct graphic novel adaptation of the Frank Miller classics was simply spectacular to watch. Cinematical thinks "The Hard Goodbye" was the best of the stories and we agree although it did run a little longer than necessary. We can forgive that though because of Carla Gugino. Mmmm, Carla Gugino. We're highly recommending the flick, particularly if you're a fan of low plot, high action, comic style storytelling. Think Kill Bill on acid and with a lot more focus on one style.

• The El Rey hosts slocore progenitors Low with Pedro the Lion and Listing Ship tonight at 8 PM. Check Ticketmaster for ticket availability.

We thought we were just going to a screening but ended up at the domestic premiere of Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle (originally titled Gong Fu) at the Arclight. Sony Pictures Classics treated us to Chinese dragon dancers and a kung fu display before we waited for 10 minutes while the overbooked cineramadome tried to clear the aisleways so the movie could start.

Speaking of Sin City, we weren't invited to last night's premiere of the film at Mann National in Westwood but, by the look of things, all the rest of Hollywood was. Every time we find something about the flick, we're surprised by another actor or actress being in the movie that we didn't previously know about. The premiere revealed Carla Gugino is in the film. She plays Lucille. This is very exciting. We're still mourning the untimely demise of Karen Sisco.

Some people love their t-shirt blogs. We love a blog about movie posters. Posterwire is a new blog focused on film posters, design, and movies in general. Without reading a word, LAist was immediately in love with the site for featuring the Jessica Alba version of the Sin City poster series.
