Shopping "experiences" like those Rick Caruso has developed in Los Angeles certainly give locals a lot to grouse about, but aside from the perils of modern living (see: Muffin tops, American Girl, and Uggs), these outdoor hyper-designed environments aren't anything new. Of course we can go back hundreds and hundreds of years and note that shopping outdoors in a village-esque atmosphere was a way of life--mainly because you lived in that village--but we can also go back to the 1930s to look at was once a glorious architectural and entrepreneurial vision that was much celebrated right here in LA.

The LAFD is reporting a fatal fall at the Topanga Plaza shopping mall, located at 6600 Topanga Boulevard in Canoga Park. According to the LAFD's Brian Humphrey: "One person [is] dead at scene of (long?) fall at shopping mall." No further details are currently available. The mall is operated by the Westfield chain of malls, and opens for business on Sundays at 11 a.m. It is not clear if the incident took place before or during shopping hours or at what location in the mall the fall happened.

  • In the wee hours of the morning, a cop driving west on Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys crashed his patrol car into a tree in order to avoid a collision with another driver who was believed to have been under the influence. The suspected DUI driver allegedly was driving away from a bar, and got away after the cop's crash.

  • Up in Ojai, folks are talking about Jennifer Moss, an eccentric resident who likes to ride around on her motorcycle in a hemp g-string and flower-shaped pasties in the name of environmentalism. Her latest outing was on Easter Sunday outside a Catholic Church, which locals did not appreciate.
