Wisdom, as Told by a Gasoline Station in Sherman Oaks

Apparently, a 76 Station in Sherman Oaks has been dispensing messages to customers for some 10 years now. "t’s not the cheapest gas in town, but it’s clearly the most articulate," said blogger Lucinda Michele, who posted about it on Los Angeles. Metblogs. Adding to that, a commenter wished that life had more cheerful easter eggs like this, hidden all around." So do we, so do we...

Having enjoyed Tara's Himalayan Cuisine on Venice Boulevard in the past, this opportunity for a new food couldn't be passed.

Is there a better place than Los Angeles to eat a wide variety of amazing food that so happens to be inexpensive? Probably not. We're as lucky as we are well fed. The new Studio Oaks Park, officially a wide median along Ventura Boulevard with a walking path that straddles the border of Sherman Oaks and Studio City, is practically finished. The meandering walking path is open to the public, except for one block that was flooded out by a trunkline break on Coldwater Canyon, and all that needs to be done to complete the project is some landscaping, which has become an issue between neighbors.

Woman Robbed After Posting Ad on Craigslist

Again with Craigslist? A woman in Sherman Oaks--living just across the street from the Galleria--was robbed last night when two men responded to her masseuse ad on Craigslist. A gun was pointed at her head, she was tied up and robbed before they left. She was able to free herself and call the police around 8:30 p.m. Earlier this month, police were looking for a few people who would place car ads on the website for extremely low prices. When the buyer would come with cash, as requested, they would be robbed. Two of the suspects have been arrested.

With all its hustle, the flips and fast paced jittering, swing dancing can be intimidating. But as lindy exhanges across the nation became bigger deals in the early part of this century, party goers danced and drunk their way into the night begetting a much slower, groovier and inebriated style. Enter blues dancing... the resurgence, at least.

Police Find Nothing in Alleged Sherman Oaks Bank Break-In

Despite an abundance of precaution over a possible bank break-in, police officials have called a code 4--everything back to normal, no issues--at a Bank of America branch in Sherman Oaks. Around 8 a.m. when the bank manager arrived, things seemed out of place and suspicious noises were heard coming from the vault area. Police were alerted who in turn shut down Ventura Blvd. between Cedros and Willis for 3 and a half hours. Search teams found no one or any evidence of of a robbery or person. A transient with a black duffle bag--wrong place, wrong time, wrong bag--was temporarily detained and eventually let go. In the photo to the right, captured by an LAist reader in an office building across the street, police are seen on the roof of the bank building.

Police have shut down Ventura Boulevard between Cedros and Willis in Sherman Oaks after bank employees suspected a possible break-in in progress this morning. Upon arriving around 8 a.m., bank workers heard suspicious noises coming from the vault area. Tuesday is not exactly a day that screams "go to the Farmer's Market!" Yet everyday of the week, there is one somewhere in the Los Angeles region and on Tuesdays, Woodman Avenue in Sherman Oaks becomes one of those places. The weekly event is not purely a farmer's market (and probably why it's called the Woodman Avenue Market)--there are plenty of vendors selling clothes, solar power and sunglasses. The real meat, no pun intended, are the quality fresh farm stands. Our favorite pick is easily the South Central Farmers who offer a box (or three bags worth) of vegetables for $15 (you will be stir frying all week long, no joke).

Daily News Blogger Opines on His New Sherman Oaks Real Estate

Steven Rosenberg has been a long time Van Nuys resident and neighborhood blogger for the Daily News. As of today's City Council vote, he now lives in Sherman Oaks and tells it likes it is from his perspective: "For one thing, every single person who bought into this neighborhood received a discount of sorts on their home by virtue of it NOT being in Sherman Oaks, even though it is close (and this is, for the most part, a fairly nice area). Now those who live here presently can reap a premium of many thousands of dollars if and when they sell (or rent) their home by virtue of their ability to write the words 'Sherman Oaks' in their ads and listings without the additional word 'adjacent' following. All this BS about 'feeling' like you're a Sherman Oaks resident, even though you live in Van Nuys — I didn't buy it then, I don't buy it now."

Portion of Van Nuys Annexed into Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys to Seek Cityhood, Sherman Oaks to try to Become Bel Air

In a vote that angered some and brought extreme joy to others, the Los Angeles City Council voted to annex a portion of Van Nuys into Sherman Oaks after residents of the affected area brought forth the idea last year. During the meeting, Don Schultz stood up announcing that he and others will seek for Van Nuys to secede from the city and that by 2011, they will celebrate their independence. There have been also rumors, albeit quite possibly jokes, that a portion of Sherman Oaks will try to annex into neighboring Bel Air.

Part of Van Nuys Could Become Part of Sherman Oaks Today

[UPDATE: Shortly before noon, the City Council voted to approve the annexation. Read more here]

Sherman Oaks Could Grow, Leaving Van Nuys Smaller

A motion that is likely to pass in the City Council will take a chunk of Van Nuys and plop it within Sherman Oaks' boundaries. This will be the second time that Van Nuys has lost parts of its neighborhood--Valley Glen and Lake Balboa are also post-Van Nuys 'hoods.

Speed Limit on Beverly Glen to Increase & Decrease

If you've ever driven the 2.1 mile canyon-to-valley-floor stretch of Beverly Glen Boulevard, you probably have noticed that it changes throughout, telling you to go 25 mph, now 35, oh wait, now 30. The city's Department of Transportation now wants to change the sporadic nature by splitting the baby with a uniform 30 mph from Mulholland to Moorpark in Sherman Oaks. "It will be easier for motorists to monitor their speed as well as for the police to enforce using radar," said John Fisher, Assistant General Manager of LADOT. Once an ordinance is drafted, it will be submitted to the Transportation Commission for consideration.

LAPD Sting will Focus on Speedy Sherman Oaks Drivers

Every month LAPD Senior Lead Officer George Aguilar takes a look at his area's traffic patterns and behaviors and focuses enforcement on one issue. In the past, he's done pedestrian crosswalk stings along Ventura Blvd., catching drivers who ignore those walking across the street, and enforcement on the various no left turn signs on Van Nuys Blvd. This month, he's going after speeders in these general areas, including nearby side streets: Woodman/Ventura, Van Nuys/Ventura, streets surrounding Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park and Valley Vista between Sepulveda and Coldwater Canyon. He encourages people to spread the word (so tell your friends), but he won't say what days each area will be heavily patrolled. Basically, if you keep it cool, there's nothing to worry about.

Bank Robbery Prompts Lockdown of Area within Sherman Oaks

A U.S. Bank branch at Woodman and Riverside in Sherman Oaks was robbed this afternoon at around 2 p.m. Now a perimeter has been set up as police look for two suspects who may be armed. A bomb squad was also called two the scene because of a suspicious package left at the bank by the two suspects, the LAPD says. Notre Dame High School and some other nearby buildings have been evacuated.

Dessert? Two Sweet Eateries Open on Ventura Boulevard

They may be only a fourth mile apart, but both family friendly yogurt chain Menchies and newcomer Sweet Rarts just recently opened in Sherman Oaks' restaurant row. First came the addicting and popular Menchies of Valley Village fame, which opened at Ventura and Dixie Canyon, most appropriately next to an elementary school.

LAistory: The Tower of Wooden Pallets

We live in a city filled with thousands of landmarks, but whether it's just our proclivity for changing courses like our capricious weather patterns, or it's a matter of life imitating the kind of art that put us on the map, even when we call something a "landmark" it doesn't mean it's even here anymore. Or, really, that it even makes sense. Such is the case with one of the most unusual landmarks to spring up in the city, the Tower of Wooden Pallets that accidentally became art, then a landmark, then--to most--just a memory.

Construction to Begin on New Pocket Park in Studio City, Sherman Oaks

Studio Oaks Park, named that way because it stretches between the two Los Angeles city neighborhoods, will start to become a reality next week when construction crews enter Phase 1 of the project.

Into the hills of Sherman Oaks where expensive homes sit and windy roads lay are many a cul-de-sac. One of those areas off Beverly Glen leads a few Angelenos in the know about a little-known hiking trail in a practically ignored city park called Deervale (it's not even listed on the city's website).

it's been about two years since Vi Trinh left her pursuit of a child psychology degree at UCLA to open Se' La Vi Sweets as a private catering business. Instead of doing homework, she would watch the Food Network and bake. So at the insistence of her boyfriend--and now partner Physent Walker--she dropped out of college and applied to Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena. She was accepted, but could not afford tuition, so she just went at it, full time, catering parties and events with her own style of cupcakes and other sweets. So far, business is great.
