DVD Tuesday: <e>Let This One In!</em>

Let the Right One In was a fiendishly good reimainging of the vampire story. Naturallly, it is now being re-made into what will surely be an inferior, American film. I thought Mickey Rourke gave the performance of the year in The Wrestler, but Sean Penn was almost as impressive with his rendering of the late Harvey Milk. Speaking of fine actors, Anne Hathaway stirs my drink. While I liked Synedoche, New York, I was let down by it because of my absurdly high expectations for Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut. Role Models was better than it had any right to be. I'm still amazed that Seann William Scott is the sole survivor of the American Pie crowd.

DVD Tuesday: Horses, Weed, Costner

I'm a huge fan of the revisionist Western movement currently threading its way through our culture, but didn't Deadwood do it so well that everything else feels tired (fine films like Appaloosa included)? Conversely, can anyone name a good Kevin Costner film in the last decade? And you can't say The Upside of Anger because he was just a co-star! Humboldt County is all about weed and freedom so this column approves purely on principle (review coming up very soon!). Two Tyler Perry movies in one week?! Who did I piss off?

finished fifth with a decent take of $6.5M ($20.9M).

I doubt that Soul Men will be very good, but I'll watch it just to see the late Bernie Mac. His untimely death teaches all of us not to do tomorrow (or months from now) what you can do today! I know the perfect girl to take to the ghoulish Repo! The Genetic Opera, but she's so darn unavailable! Were there unresolved plot points from the original that required a Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa? Does anyone not like Paul Rudd? The great David Wain (watch this!) directed Role Models so I will definitely check it out.

I understand the appeal of Steven Seagal far more than I ever will that of Adam Sandler. I've hated him in his comedies just as much as I have in his dramas. In fact, I've yet to make it through the entirety of even though Paul Thomas Anderson is high on my list of favorite directors. Considering all that, there's obviously no chance that I'll be seeing You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
