Weekend Movie Guide: I'll take Monsters over Aliens

Does anyone else have the same feeling about Monsters vs. Aliens that I do? Namely, "Gee, I wish Pixar had made this movie instead of DreamWorks." It's either very sad or very cynical that two fine actors like Martin Donovan and Virginia Madsen are doing rote horror pics like The Haunting in Connecticut. The premise of 12 Rounds is that a criminal is manipulating a cop after the cop kills the criminal's girlfriend. Is it just me or does that seem like a reasonable response? Skip The Education of Charlie Banks and wait for next week's very similarly-toned Adventureland. Spinning Into Butter stars Sarah Jessica Parker. So...I won't be seeing it.

While the new DVD set of may have been the worst movie of the year. Poor, brilliant Michelle.

In what can only be considered a shocking debut, can maintain any momentum going forward is debatable since almost half of its weekend gross came from Friday audiences who rushed out to see the film to the tune of $26.9M.

There's really no point in me carping or teasing about Sex and the City since it's obviously not a movie for me. Early ticket sales are showing it to be a surprisingly big hit in its first weekend. Maybe it's success will convince HBO to get off its ass, throw out a big pile of money and put together features for on the big screen if Milch would explain what it was all about.

Readers of made only a ripple at the domestic box-office. It should do much better on DVD as a wider audience discovers this wonderful, heartbreaking film.

Convincing people to go to a movie theater and see a documentary is a labor of love for me. Folks always protest that they'd rather see something else--something bigger and shinier!--but if they suck it up and buy the ticket for the doc they are invariably happy that they did. This weekend, a truly great documentary unspools in Los Angeles. It's called Young @ Heart and it's about a group of elderly New Englanders who love to sing, well, Coldplay, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, etc. That's right--it's about senior citizens who live to rock. See it.

LAist was intrigued awhile back looking at what Angelenos were watching off Netflix and wanted to check out what seems to be on our radar now. Any of these strike your fancy? Do they seem excessively random, even for LA?

When did Matthew McConaughey become the new Meg Ryan?

Let's face it. People in California have pretty much resigned themselves to the fact that come November 2nd, the electoral votes from this great state will most likely be piling up for Mr. John Kerry. It's the result of having a very liberal state which almost always ends up voting for the Democratic candidate. That's the reality, and that's fine.

Starting at 5:00 PM today, Godiva Chocolatier will open bidding on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, a series of five special dinners in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Boston. The winners of these dinners will be treated to dinner with a celebrity, cooked by a celebrity chef, with proceeds from the events donated to a different charity in each city. Further, each chef has agreed to prepare a menu focused on a specific Godiva truffle flavor. (Personally, LAist would gladly take just the truffles.)
