Sanitation 2.0

For those living in apartments or condo buildings, much of the recycling is done by the city's Multifamily Residential Recycling Program from the the L.A. Bureau of Sanitation. The progressive department, who is also aggressively working on a zero waste plan with the public, has now entered the world of Web 2.0. They just set up Twitter and Facebook accounts so people can learn about materials accepted in blue bins, but also for residents to send suggestions and questions. Sounds like a good idea considering over 400,000 multifamily residential units take part in the program.

An elderly couple was inside the home, but not injured. The driver was treated on scene for non-life threatening injuries.

"There are issues, however, uncovered in my audit regarding a lack of 21st Century business practices and efficiencies, which require attention." Among the problems she lists are broken equipment, outdated software and the lack of evaluation. Los Angeles has the largest sewer system in the nation with 6,500 miles of sewers carrying 450 million gallons of waste every day. A 2004 lawsuit settlement after torrential rains caused significant sewage overflowing gave the city 10 years to implement a program to reduce the flooding in future rainstorms.

Beginning today, Bureau of Sanitation will be traveling through neighborhoods damaged by the fire to pick up large and fire damaged bulky items from the front curb of people's homes. The city asks if homeowners need special assistance or have any questions please call 3-1-1 and ask for the Bureau of Sanitation.

Mahalo Daily has been locally focused the past couple of days. Yesterday, they spoke to people at the Santa Monica promenade about the effect of gas prices on their lives. Today, they tag along with the city's Bureau of Sanitation in South LA for a day of bulky item pickups. Good times.

If you think you can just throw it in the trash, you're wrong. That would be really bad for the environment and bad for your check book. Occasionally, there are e-waste events around the city, but lucky for us, the City of LA has six S.A.F.E. Centers (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics) that are open to the public a few days a week as a free service. Today, we headed to the Sun Valley S.A.F.E....
