Ryan Adams sucks and Matt Costa is all the way in Long Beach, so if there's anything worth checking out tonight that you probably haven't done, then it's some salsa dancing in Studio City with Johnny Polanco (pictured right). His band has "contagious Latin Music that is truly appreciated by the dancing connoisseurs." Rock. Johnny Polanco y Su Conjunto Amistad @ Mama Juana's Bone Thugs-N-Harmony @ Crash Mansion Poison the Well, The Locust, Dance Gavin......

I'm hoping that no one had time for TV last night and if they did they had the class to watch the Boris Karloff marathon on TCM. 8:00pm Ugly Betty ABC - The Halloween Episode. TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick. 9:00pm To Die In Jerusalem HBO - Have heard enough about this documentary on NPR and elsewhere to know it's a good thing. TV Junkie Pick-O-The-Night 9:00pm The Office NBC - If you don't feel like......

You may have noticed a new button on our left-hand column with the title We See The Best Concerts. It dawned on us the other day that we really do go to the best concerts and we usually write about them the next day or a few days later. So here's a wrap up of all 37 shows we reviewed this month, with links to the posts just in case you missed it. Chris......

Last night, alt-country hero Ryan Adams and his backing band, The Cardinals, played his only Los Angeles show on his tour for his 9th album, Easy Tiger, at the Wilshire Theater to a sold out audience. Adams is known for his lengthy sets and last night was no exception, playing for over two hours both old and new songs (mostly new) - all very well done. The Cardinals, his favorite back up band and......

Last night's show was underwhelming. Not in terms of performance, but in terms of turnout. Given, the show was up against NME's David Bazan extravaganza (ouch). I feel compelled to expose the flaws in order to prove that Acute deserves much, much more. As I arrive fashionably late, I walk into the Troubadour and my jaw drops. There's no more than 50 people inside as Acute began their set with the upbeat 'Rip Your......

Country music proved to be an Achilles heel for many of our American Idol contestants. The night started off on a good note, with baldiePhil Stacey doing a decent job on Keith Urban's "Where the Blacktop Ends" and Jordin Sparks doing an even better job on coach Martina McBride's song "Broken Wing" (which is a lot of chutzpah for a 17-year-old). Then came Sanjaya. With permed hair in a do-rag, he butchered a song......

NYC did not disappoint us in last night’s American Idol. The cup runneth over with the number of contestants to fly their freak flags high, which made for an entertaining two hours. While the other audition cities had their share of weirdos, the Big Apple had plenty of FWAs – freaks with attitude – East Coast style. The show opened with Ryan Adams’ “New York, New York” being used under Ryan Seacrest’s opening travelogue......

I humbly present this week's offering of classic crooners, underground rappers, David Bowie, heavy metal, art rock, prog rock, and even a little yacht rock. 'Tis a pity we are built with only two ears. Rock Age of Nemesis - Terra Incognita (Magna Carta) *America (feat. Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, and Adam Schlesinger) - Here & Now (Burgundy) Isabelle Antena - Carpe Diem/Les Derniers Guerriers Romantiques (LTM / Boutique NL) Atrophy - Socialized Hate......

A Word or 44: The first 1/2 of the "24" season premiere was quite good even though I don't understand how Jack found the terrorist dude before his house got blown up. Also, was there some anal play going on between Jack and the first terrorist guy? Kinky. Tonight - Monday - January 15th, 2007 "Lawrence of Arabia" (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) Quite possibly the best movie ever made. "Hamlet" (IFC, 6:00 p.m.) Classic Shakespeare......

Several rock options tonight, there's Beck at the Wiltern, Cat Power at the John Anson Ford, Pink at the Avalon, Mark Knofler and Emmylou Harris at the Gibson Amphitheater, Hawksley Workman at the Viper... or across the street at the Whisky they're throwing a benefit for Arthur Lee, the frontman of the classic 60s group Love. Lee had been touring the world as Love, with the more-than-capable local boys Baby Lemonade as his band.......

Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scene. Don't even front like they don't. They also have Dorito bananas and white guys shopping for wives. What they don't have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers. Bostonist sees Boston and Somerville each whip out their art and face off. A plagiarized novel is the......

It's a musical night here in the city as we all attempt to recover from what LAist hopes was a great weekend. Pick one and run with it! Tonight in the Knitting Factory Main room, Anti-, KCRW and Filter Magazine present an exclusive pre-release listening party for Tom Waits' Real Gone at 7:00 PM. The listening party will be followed by a screening of Big Time; admission is free and the first 25 guest......

Any day that brings the weekend that much closer is okay by LAist standards. Thankfully, this particular day also has plenty of diversions available to kill the time between Thursday and Friday. Tonight at the Troubadour, catch former-punk-turned-country-crooner and Ryan Adams cohort Jesse Malin performing with The Damnwells and Holly Ramos. Doors open at 8:00 PM and tickets are $12.00 advance.......
