Major Delays Expected on the Blue Line this Morning

Construction this weekend to connect Blue Line and Expo Line track seems to have caused a problem and trains are now being delayed. The LA Times reports that some commuters might be facing up to a 40 minute delay between the Washington and 7th/Metro stations, with buses bridging commuters to al stations between.

Alleged Text Messaging Driver may have Caused 4-Vehicle Rush Hour Crash

A crash involving four vehicles prompted a SigAlert on the eastbound 118 Freeway during rush hour this morning. A witness told police that a driver of black honda was text messaging prior to hitting a bus, spinning out and hitting other vehicles. Another bus and a box truck were also involved in the crash, which was located before Reseda Boulevard.

Metro to Consider Lifting Rush Hour Ban for Bikes on Trains

Although the ban of bicycles on a handful of rush hour Metro trains is not strictly enforced, the rule is still on the books. After threatening to enforce the rule, officials changed their tune and most recently, the transit agency "piloted a program of taking out seats to make more space for bikes on trains," reported Damien Newton at Streetsblog. "The first step in the public process to end the ban will be a pair of meetings this Thursday in Metro Headquarters at noon and 6 P.M. The meetings will be held at the Board Overflow Room on the Third Floor across from the cafeteria." For more details on the public meetings, head over to this flyer (.pdf).

The city will keep Sepulveda Blvd closed through approximately 5:00 am. tomorrow morning as clean up efforts continue after last night's Sepulveda Pass Fire. Be prepared for another slower moving rush hour.

If live, work or are traveling today, here's a reason to plan ahead, or at least know why you'll be stuck in heavier traffic during the evening rush hour tonight. Westbound Century Blvd. will be closed from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with drivers being diverted north to Aviation, then west on Arbor Vitae to Airport heading south and back on westbound Century. Eastbound lanes exiting LAX will not be affected. But why is this happening? After the "living wage" ordinance in 2007 that jacked up minimum wage for hotels near LAX, hotel management at the LAX Hilton sued the city. Therefore, Hilton workers will be protesting and pressing for their higher wages. Also: Saturday is looking to be a heavy traffic day with at least four large events, mostly sporting, around the city.

For their fifth installation of the notorious Tiger Team who patrol, ticket and tow illegally parked vehicles along high traffic corridors during morning and afternoon rush hour, today they released the team across the city. And instead of patrolling one sprawling thoroughfare like they've done in the past (example, 4.2 miles of Sunset Blvd. from Vermont Ave. to Laurel Canyon Blvd.), Tiger Team V will hit 25 of the city's "Hotspots" (most frequently parking violated areas) throughout the City including Pico Boulevard, Westwood Boulevard, Victory Boulevard, De Soto Avenue, Figueroa Boulevard, Hoover Street, La Brea Avenue, Broadway Street and Hill Street. So hopefully those cars in illegally parked or stopped in parking lanes won't be blocking your commute anymore.

On Tuesday night at 5:23 p.m., a train heading towards the Valley got stuck between Hollywood and Universal City. For 80 minutes, one half of the tracks was out of service while Metro engineers tried to figure out what stopped the rush-hour train with around 400 passengers aboard. Metro officials called the situation "extremely rare," but reports from frequent riders say a 40-minute delay happened on Monday evening as well.

One of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's traffic fixes has been these anti-gridlocked zones. But do people actually listen to signs? No. But with a threat, more will. So then came the Tiger Team, a specialized team that would patrol a heavy rush hour traffic artery to enforce the no parking signs by ticketing and towing away any vehicle parked there. Today, the fourth such team was deployed on Sunset Blvd.

Atlanta may have received top honors this time around, but Los Angeles and San Francisco linger at the back of the top ten list for worst commutes in the country, according to a report released by Forbes. And to that, they compare some LA vs. SF statistics:

Downtown Los Angeles maven and blogger Eric Richardson posted an observation today about street construction and its lack of impact on traffic. Specifically, he speaks of a transformer that's been sitting in the northbound curb lane on 6th street for several weeks. This very lane is designated for traffic during peak hours and parking otherwise, but during rush hour, traffic seems to be been fine.

Update 7:00 p.m.: Sepulveda is still shut down and now crews expect to open it around 9 p.m. tonight.

Jodie Foster's rather inexplicable box-office appeal was on half-display this weekend as held strong in its second weekend, stealing an additional 9.15M and raising its treasure chest to 28.5M.

In the slowest weekend since the early spring, suffered a precipitous decline in its second weekend, tumbling 62% and bringing in an additional 10 million bucks (44.2M).

I'm not sure which is more confusing: that (11.6M).

became the first movie since late May to win back-to-back weekends, owing as much to a weak slate of openers as to its own relative strength. The Judd Apatow-produced dick montage hauled in 18 million bucks and helped push the summer box office to a record 4.003 billion dollars. It's the first 4 billion dollar summer ever, though higher ticket prices (and not increased admissions) account for that big, shiny number.

Exceeding even the most optimistic of expectations, continued to hang on with 6.6 million and a new cume of 165.1M.

Even though finished third, totalling 11.1 million and now sitting at an unexpectedly robust 152.2 million.

Before catching The Simpsons this past weekend, this LAist poster had to sit through -- not just one -- but four lame ass trailers. Usually, you get a 50-50 chance of seeing at least one good trailer...because, now call us crazy, but isn't the purpose of a movie trailer to entice people to actually go see the film? At the very least, aren't we supposed to say, "Yeah, the trailer's the best part of that movie..."
