Less Incursions? New LAX Runway Safety System Installed

This morning officials will announce a new runway safety system designed to prevent airport accidents. LAX has been subject to many close calls over the years. The new safety lights, known as Runway Status Lights, are a series of red lights embedded in the pavement that warn pilots when it’s unsafe to enter or cross a runway, according to Mayor Villaraigosa's office. The system cost $7 million and has been placed on the eight highest risk taxiways at the airport.

As of two minutes before 9 a.m., "passengers on a flight from El Salvador have been waiting on a Southern California regional airport's tarmac since about midnight after their plane was diverted from Los Angeles International Airport because of heavy fog," according to the Associated Press. The original crew is now over their maximum hours they can fly so a new crew is taking over.

A Southwest flight and a Skywest turboprop had a close call runway incursion Sunday morning. Albeit considered minor, it was the eighth such incident since October.

Since the beginning of 2007, there have been nine "close calls" on LAX's runways with the latest on Wednesday evening at 8:43 p.m. An American Airlines jet arriving from Baja California just landed on the outer runway and needed to cross the inner runway where a Mexicana Airlines jet was preparing for take off.

The air traffic controller told the American Airlines pilot to stop before crossing the inner runway, Gregor told the newspaper, but the pilot read back instructions that he was going to proceed across the runway to a terminal gate.

A Christmas Day United Airlines Boeing 757 flight to Kauai returned to LAX 10-minutes after take off when the windshield cracked. The jet and its 178 passengers landed safely and began their journey to Hawaii three and a half hours later.
