USC Battles the Ducks

Saturday is big. It’s really big. Everyone seems to know it. ESPN’s College GameDay is going to be there. Oregon’s newest bastardized uniform creation (carbon fiber helmets and “steel” pants) will be there. A capacity crowd at Autzen Stadium will be there.

Mayor Twitters About Lu at U2, Forgets What City He's In

Swept up in the good time-y vibes surely prevalent during last night's heavily-touted U2 concert at the Rose Bowl, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa took a couple of opportunities to share his exuberance over the occasion via Twitter. Villaraigosa and his girlfriend, KTLA reporter Lu Parker, were among the approximately 96,000 fans who packed the Pasadena stadium to see one of the last engagements in the rock band's "360 Tour" with support from the Black Eyed Peas.

ChivaClásico Family Feud Hits Rose Bowl

Sometimes it is hard to describe events from the soccer world to those that don't follow the sport. Tonight's ChivaClásico match between CD Guadalajara (Chivas de Guadalajara) and Chivas USA at the Rose Bowl happens to fit that category quite well.

Station Fire Won't Cancel UCLA vs. SD State Game

As the Station Fire raged over the weekend, causing air quality to pummel, officials were unsure if a game between UCLA and San Diego State could safely be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. After consulting university medical staff along with Pasadena officials and air-quality experts, Athletic director Dan Guerrero said the game is on! So now the question is, will the Bruins show up and kick ass?

Pasadena Eyes Pedestrian, Bike Lanes for Rose Bowl Loop

As the city of Pasadena explores options to help fix the mess that is the popular three-mile loop around the Rose Bowl used by walkers, joggers and cyclists, three options have from planners with two exceptionally progressive. "What a difference two years make," said LA Streetsblog writer Damien Newton noting that an older proposal sought to eliminate bicycles from loop altogether. The three proposals include leaving the path as it is (unpopular), marking a yellow pedestrian lane with two lanes of car/bicycle traffic in opposite direction (improved) and what's seen in the image posted here: a pedestrian path, a bicycle lane and a one-way car lane (the most popular for many).

LAist Interview: Chelsea FC Midfielder John Mikel Obi

Pasadena will once again play host to top level soccer when Chelsea FC takes on Inter Milan on Tuesday night at the Rose Bowl. The match is part of the World Football Challenge tournament currently being played throughout the nation, but it is the only one scheduled for the famed Pasadena venue.

We may have spent the evening watching fireworks go off all along the horizon, in the streets, on the hills, and from major venues in Los Angeles, and we may have fallen asleep to the not-so-dulcet sounds of neighbors snap-crackle-popping their own stash of illegal fireworks into the wee hours, but we also woke up to a few great photos posted online from last night's many fireworks displays.

The mutual love-affair between Los Angeles and England's Depeche Mode is long and storied. Remember when they played the Rose Bowl? This video might refresh your memory. Last seen locally at Coachella and the Staples Center, you'll get to see them under the stars this tour when the lads play two at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday August 16, and Monday August 17. Tickets are now on sale.

Should Bailed Out Citibank be Sponsoring the Rose Bowl?

Over $300 billion in bailout money from the government and the next place you see Citigroup's money is towards a major sponsorship of a football game. Good advertising move or waste? The money to secure their sponsorship was spent long ago, but they should still be publicly humiliated, right? We hear that in every time out a new stat about Citi's epic fail will be announced and it will be scrolled across the scoreboard as the band plays the theme from Titanic. Or something like that.

Has the Recession Hit the Rose Bowl?

Are USC fans bored of going to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena? Tomorrow the Trojans take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the "grandaddy of them all." But it looks like tickets are still available, and some are even being sold under face value. The game is a contractual sellout, so tickets will be gone by the time the teams take to the gridiron tomorrow. However, the Pasadena Star-News reported that tickets were being sold for $100 each a few days ago. Today on Stub Hub, they're being advertised for $175 and up. So why the anticlimactic atmosphere for this Rose Bowl game? Is it a case of the same old, same old or is the economy robbing us of football fever? / Photo by BinaryLA via LAist's flickr pool.

Reminder: Metro Trains Run All Night with Free Fares

Metro (not Metrolink) will be offering 24-hour service on all its rail lines (that's Red, Purple, Blue, Green and Gold) tonight in celebration of New Year's Eve. They'll be running every 20 minutes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and you don't have to pay for a fare between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. (and that includes buses, too). Then, Thursday morning to facilitate the large crowds for the Tournament of the Roses and the game, Gold Line trains will run every 7 to 8 minutes between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m., every 10 minutes between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and again every 7 to 8 minutes between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Enjoy your night!

Oh, Cloris Leachman, you silly bawdy 82-year-old who has charmed your way through Dancing with the Stars this season. You've done it again. Today, you were named the grand marshal of the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena! Big kudos.

More than 800 people got sick (13 went to the hospital) after watching the Fresno Bulldogs beat the UCLA Bruins on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. What happened? No, it wasn't UCLA's poor performance. For the most part, it was heat-related. "Paramedics from Los Angeles and Glendale were called in to assist in the response," which the the LA Times reported to be the largest medical response to the Rose Bowl.

los angeles NFL stadiumWell, that was the headline the San Gabriel Tribune ran last week. "We are going to have a team here next September," John Semcken said. Semcken is the VP of Majestic Realty, Developer Ed Roski Jr.'s development company that plans on building a new NFL stadium... in Diamond Bar some 26 miles East of Downtown (last month they were saying city of Industry).

Jim Purol put his weary butt down in the seat at the Rose Bowl today that took him over the line and earned him the record for sitting in the most seats in 48 hours. The Pasadena Star-News reports that Purol took a load off in over 39,000 seats, which is only scratching the surface of the legendary stadium's 90,000+ capacity (as mentioned on the official site's facts list). What's crazier, is that Purol is going to keep going--he's going to sit in every seat of the house over the next 5 days...and he's hoping to figure out which one is the best. Our guess? Maybe the last one...

One man is planning on sitting in 40,000 seats at the Rose Bowl Stadium to find the best one. Stuntman Jim Mouth began at 10:00 a.m. this morning, but it's not just about breaking the "Most Seats Sat in 48 hours" Guinness world record, he's also raising money for Outward Bound Los Angeles, an organization that provides "nature-based education that promotes positive self-development, environmental responsibility, and outdoor career exposure for low-income, at-risk, and urban youth."

I didn't want to just do a "best of" list. So this year, I've decided to take a years worth of personal New Year's Resolutions, ask around for those of friends and put a call out to readers (email me here) about things you've always wanted to know, always wanted to do and then take those requests and ask an expert, an insider to help out. The result? Here goes...

New Year's Day, most in LA seemed to be up in Pasadena watching either the Rose Parade or the Rose Bowl, or getting over their New Year's Eve hangover at home watching TV. Why do I think that? Because the roads were EMPTY! It seemed that no one was on the roads. My goal was to head out with a friend, with cameras in hand and hit the roads and drive around LA on the one day in the year that you can get from one end of the city to the other in 20 minutes. The city seems almost small and quaint when you can get from Silverlake to Santa Monica at a constant MPH and without going under 45.

It’s the first day of work for many of us -- and it pretty much sucks. Thank God it’s a short week. If you haven't gotten enough going out for the New Year, here’s what's going on around town tonight:

It’s pretty quiet today in LA. So take another Alka Seltzer and rest up for work tomorrow.

Clippers 91, Timberwolves 82 - The Clippers came into the game with a six game losing streak, several players out with injuries, and went 0-for-14 from three point range. Fortunately, Minnesota is the worst team in the NBA so none of that mattered.

As reported earlier this week, on New Year's Eve, there will be all night Metro rail service. As one commenter pointed out, the news was actually broken in a press release where it was buried with not much detail given:

“The Tournament of Roses parade and game is the biggest venue for Metro Gold Line service all year, with upwards of 60,000 train boardings on a single day,” said Pam O’Connor, Santa Monica City Council member and Metro Board Chair. “Metro is meeting that demand this year with quality, all-night train service and free rides from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. that day to ensure the public enjoys these wonderful New Year’s festivities.”
