New Years Resolutions - The Tale of Two Parties

On New Year's Eve I found myself in the fortunate position of being invited to two parties. One was being held at the swanky Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, well known playground of the rich and famous. The other had an Old Hollywood theme and was thrown at the ancient Vogue Theater, which is no longer a theater but remains an icon (and is rumored to be one of the most haunted places in Hollywood.) The two soirees were four blocks from each other on Hollywood Blvd, but the price of admission cost ten times more at one than the other.

Hollywood's honorary mayor, Johnny Grant, passed away Wednesday night. LAist Featured Photos photographer, Jonathan Alcorn, visits his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star:

Flowers on the star of Honorary Mayor Johnny Grant beneath the Kodak Theatre during a memorial held by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Honorary Mayor Johnny Grant has died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles on Jan 9,,2008. He was found by police in his room at the Roosevelt Hotel where he lived after telling his manager he felt 'lousy.' Grant was a radio personality and television producer, and was was best known as the honorary mayor of Hollywood. He was also chair of the committee that selected stars for the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Johnny Grant was found dead tonight, around 7 p.m., on a bed at the Roosevelt Hotel where he lived on the 14th floor in a suite.

Grant, 84, has been one of Hollywood's most enthusiastic supporters for more than 50 years. Grant got his start in entertainment by hosting a daily radio show in New York City for servicemen and women during World War II, and later co-hosted the first national telethon ever produced to help send America's athletes to Helsinki Olympics in 1952. In 1980, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce named Grant as the Honorary Mayor of Hollywood where he would preside over all the Walk of Fame ceremonies where Hollywood Stars were revealed on the revered boulevard.

These days, the Roosevelt Hotel is all about partying. After the painstaking restoration of its Spanish-Moorish lobby, with its hand painted beams, tiled floors and leaded glass windows, the hotel is home to the Tropicana Bar, where guests get in free till 9pm (How generous!) and long lines develop of the young and the beautiful. They don't hold a candle to the older residents of the hotel though. The Roosevelt is rumored to be haunted. Not just haunted either, but lousy with ghosts.

How much do you love burgers? Maybe you know all the secret menu items available at In-n-Out, or maybe you're a regular fixture at Father's Office. Who's got the best burger and just what elements make a burger the best is an oft-debated topic here on LAist and elsewhere. Are the determining factors the toppings? Kind of meat? Affordability? History? Size? The variables are multifold, I know. I like burgers. I'm no crazy burger...

The ticket was $3,121 dollars and somehow it landed in my hands for free. I won't get into specifics, but I was suddenly spending my Saturday night at the hottest, most elite show in the country instead of my friend's house party (I'm sure he understands). I'll answer the most important questions first: Yes, he played "Kiss". No, he didn't play "Purple Rain". Yes, he played "Nothing Compares to You". No, he didn't play...

Looks like the Hollywood Roosevelt has some explaining to do. Here is the story from my husband, Bob: If you requested Prince tickets for the Roosevelt and never heard back, check your credit card statement! Prince just cost me a thousand freaking dollars and I didn’t even SEE the guy. When I saw the announcement to email the Roosevelt for ticket details, I did so immediately. They emailed back an order form, which had...

Just like we speculated almost a month ago, Prince's people today announced that the purple one will indeed perform for seven special nights at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood for the low, low price of $3,121 for two tickets. What do you get for your money, Los Angeles? At 7:30pm you will be treated to a fancy VIP dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's Dakota Restaurant. At 9:30pm the tiny club at the Roosevelt...

Cory Kennedy got bounced from Teddy's at the Roosevelt Hotel, thanks to Lindsay Lohan. Your fake ID didn't work because the bouncer looked a little closer this time because of Lindsay Lohan. According to the New York Times, “the door people everywhere in Hollywood are being really strict with IDs now... It’s changed since the Lindsay incident:” The incident, in which the actress Lindsay Lohan, 20, crashed her car in Hollywood and was arrested at...

- Graduation was canceled today at UC Riverside when police found a firebomb - LA Times

Dear LAist, I read your article about Prince being at the Roosevelt Hotel this summer. I remember seeing a sign that said something like, "the revolution is coming". Were they telling us something? - I'm Not Usually Around Hollywood & Highland, Really While his multi-night residency at the Roosevelt Hotel has not been officially announced, if Prince does go ahead and play seven consecutive Friday night concerts in the cozy comforts of the Hollywood...

In what could be the finest form of stealing from the rich, the Artist Formerly Known as being far more comfortable touring outside of the US, could be setting up shop a block away from Hollywood & Highland for a royal residency. The LA Times Buzz Bands blog says the details are being ironed out between the purple one and the increasingly relevant-again Roosevelt Hotel. The string of shows is scheduled to start in...

A bistro is a café that serves simple meals in a relaxed setting, the kind of place you can go where you don’t have to worry about meeting anyone’s expectations for relative fame or fashionable dress. My favorite places in L.A. this year generally fit this definition. 1. Pazzo Gelato (my review) Many of my friends look at the dessert menu before they even consider a main course, so let’s start there. After lunch...

If there's one night you really have to dig down and pony up for the rock it's New Years Eve. Don't ask us why. So today we will put the ticket prices next to each event so you don't get sticker shock when you make your last minute plans. Although the best value appears to be down in the OC, factor in 1) you have to go behind the orange curtain 2) you better...

Vanessa Grigoriadis is a fearless and whip-smart journalist whose work has appeared in Rolling Stone, New York and Radar magazines. A recent LA transplant, Vanessa excels at writing influential trend analyses and razor sharp profiles. In 1998, she authored the infamous New York feature "Power Girls," about Lizzie Grubman and other power publicists/socialites. Lizzie Grubman subsequently appropriated the article's title and made it the basis of her own reality series on MTV.

The other day we were driving along the freeway when we noticed a bumper sticker that read "Meat is Burger" and it got us to thinking about the state of the burger in LA, once again. And because we're prone to taking little trips on trains of thoughts, we remembered reading somewhere about an Oprah show airing last month that was all about the country's best burgers. We found that her guest had been GQ mag writer Alan Richman, who traveled 23,750 miles and consumed more than 150,000 calories on his mission to create a carnivorous compendium called "The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die." Coming in at number 15 is Santa Monica's The Counter's Build-Your-Own burger, which we found to be pretty good back in July. Richman's other local pick was his number six selection, Houston's California Burger. Not bad for one city to have two picks on a pretty short national list. But this got us thinking about the sort of dual world of burgers: the cheap and dirty kind, and the more highbrow variety. We checked out AOL's Cityguide's Best Burgers, and noticed it was split half bargain burgers and half gourmet; In-n-Out reigns supreme according to them. Over at Citysearch they're eager to pass on the scoop about the high-end buns and patties with their listing of "5 to Try." In the past couple of weeks, too, coverage in the LA Times has been burger centric; we've got a rave about the places you can go for Primo Patties, and a review of the just opened 25 Degrees restaurant in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where it's all about the big ticket burger.

After a long day, there is just something about going to see a jam band that this little Laister loves. Trade in those hipster duds, layered clothes, clunky jewelry, tucked-in boots for a little cordoroy and Birks. Drink a micro-beer. Check out all the boys in their Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s long-sleeved T-shirts. Close your eyes and just sway to the music man. At least that was the scene Thursday night at the Phix show at The Knitting Factory. As in get your PHIX of PHISH. Yes a cover band, one of the best and very much worth your time. Who knew there were so many hippies with one-hitters in Hollywood? Brought out the Vermonter right from my little heart.

Last night we attended the launch party for Tu Ciudad Los Angeles, a new lifestyle magazine targeted at 30-something, upscale Hispanics with above average household incomes. The party was held at the historic and plush Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with great music by Go Betty Go and Los Amigos Invisibles. Plus, an open bar, which we feel is always a good idea at events like this.
