Catch Up on the Golden Globe Nominees with the Yerke-Robins Weekly Film Dispatch

With the Golden Globes just days away, now's your last chance to catch up. Best Picture contenders duke it out with directors in tow and--in the red corner--Best Supporting Actress nominee Marisa Tomeiiiii! The Best Foreign Language noms continue their rounds of the American Cinematheque; the films at the Aero and the filmmakers at the Egyptian. Swedish director Jan Troell is particularly vigilant, blazing a one-man invasion through these events and LACMA. After the awards, feed your jingoism with all-American auteurs Dennis Hopper, Stan Brakhage and Clint Eastwood.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro and Universal have announced a new collaboration, "Monolpoly", the movie. The project will be produced and possibly directed by Ridley Scott. In a time when foreclosures are on the front page of every newspaper, it will be fascinating to see how screenwriter Scott and Pamela Pettler adapt the iconic real-estate board game into a big screen extravaganza. "Monopoly" has also found a new home in video games with the EA's recent release of "Monopoly" for Wii, PS2, PS3, and Xbox. Several other board game to the big screen projects are in development. We'd like to see "Candyland" the musical.

I was excited about Body of Lies until I started to see some very middling reviews. Still, Russell Crowe is always worth the price of admission. As for Leo...eh. Word is that Guy Ritchie returns to form with RocknRolla. As with Crowe, Gerard Butler is always rock-solid (literally!). Ernie Davis had a great story, but I'm guessing that The Express will be a stark and hammy version of it. I'd watch Jennifer Carpenter read the phonebook to herself in the dark so obviously I'll go see Quarantine (show boobs please).

"No Country For Old Men," "There Will Be Blood," "Juno," "Michael Clayton," and "Atonement" all received nominations for Best Picture this morning, as the Academy Award nominations were announced in Beverly Hills. "No Country" and "There Will Be Blood" are the front runners with eight noms apiece, including a Best Actor nod for perennial Oscar fav Daniel Day-Lewis, and directing nominations for the Coen Bros. and Paul Thomas Anderson. While Javier Bardem was recognized with a Best Supporting nom for his work in "No Country," neither Tommy Lee Jones nor Josh Brolin were nominated for the film (although Jones is in the running for a Best Actor award for his work in "In the Valley of Elah" -- did anybody actually see that?).

Decades later the moviegoing public is finally blessed with a sequel that lives up to the full potential of the Alien franchise. All it took was some lovingly modified action figures, skillful puppeteering and lo-fi effects wizardry. Ridley Scott never had it so good! Please enjoy the first episode of Alien 5, a clever sci-fi parody from the clever folks at Probot Productions....
