Last night late night rehash: Larry David on Conan was great - why don't we see more of him doing this?! Michelle Pfeiffer seemed a little uptight on Letterman - she should feel a little more secure about her undeniable beauty. Was Gavin Rossdale about to do the slip and slide on Conan lat night? He looked completely lost without a guitar, it was painful.

Upfront Day News: This week is when the networks roll out the programs they are planning to release for the Fall - or, at least, its the programs they "say" they are going to roll out for the Fall. They might announce these programs but it doesn't mean they will be given budgets to adequately promote them; it doesn't mean that some of these programs aren't "filler" to be shifted around the schedule before they are ultimately canceled; it doesn't mean that some of these programs aren't feints to throw the other networks off.

The CW announced Monday night that they would be giving back control of Sunday programming to their affiliate stations. It's been over a year and a half since The CW launched a new program for Sunday nights, "Life Is Wild", which was very short-lived. It appears that the network can't fund a couple hours of competitive TV on Sundays and that the affiliates can make more money hawking reruns of long-dead series rather than original programming from The CW.

In case you didn't hear about it yet, but internist Dr. Kutner on FOX's "House" committed suicide in Monday's episode. This was hastily written into the script as the real-life Kal Penn is leaving acting for a while to go work for the Obama administration in the Office of Public Liaison. This also means no more Harold & Kumar movies for a while, so we're all sacrificing here - but seriously, congrats Kal and godspeed.

Around Los Angeles, Largo has long been known as a solid comedy spot to see great people doing exactly what made you love them in the first place. Six months ago, you probably wouldn’t have found as much experimental comedy going on there as you do know, and that is certainly a good thing. Lately, it seems, Largo is undergoing another comedy renaissance; with the arrival of the Doug Benson Interruption, the emergence of Largo from a once-or-twice-a-month spot into a weekly venue for great laughs is becoming unavoidable, and completely welcome. The Reno 911! Benefit Show last Wednesday is a great example of where Largo is headed, and the future looks bright.

Tonight's season finale of "Damages" promises to be a nail-biter - we know where we'll be at 10pm. As it approaches, we wonder how there could possibly a third season after this, but that's the result of great writing. Unfortunately it's conflicting with the season premiere of "Reno 911!" but we take solace in the fact that it airs again later, because we're cheap that way.

You will be doing yourself a very large disservice if you don't get your ass over to Largo tonight to check out the Reno 911! Benefit Show, to raise money for Planting Peace, a charity that works to help children in impoverished nations. Every member of the show, including Tom Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio and Ian Roberts, will be sharing stage time with a roll call list of the greatest class clowns you'd kill to have in homeroom. Rob Heubel and Paul Scheer from MTV's Human Giant, Andy Daly (the principal on Eastbound and Down), Nick Kroll, Matt Besser and Matt Walsh (founders of Upright Citizens Brigade theatre) Nick Swardson, and even Rainn Wilson, to NAME JUST A FEW.

Largo at the Coronet, on La Cienega, is absolutely killing it this week. The Reno 911! benefit show is an absolute must, and CDR at UCB should be it's usual long-as-hell-but-also-gut-busting self. Naked Babies on Thursday should prove to be a great improv show from a lot of top names, and The Improv has the Sklars on Saturday. Hot DAMN folks. This recession can go to hell.

Los Angeles is filled with hardworking comedians; they’re practically bussed in from Milwaukee or St. Louis or Tampa or wherever funny comes from. For long-time writer/actor/comedian Jason Nash, it took years to discover that maybe the comedy can come from your own basement. With the continued success of his long-running podcast Guys With Feelings, Nash uses his own basement to talk about familial frustrations, life in (and outside of) ‘the biz’, and any interesting tidbits his hilarious comic friends can think up.

In the last month or two so, Comedy Central has released several DVDs, a bunch of these were sent to us for review (but sadly not including today's release of "Lewis Black's Root of All Evil - Uncensored"):

So aging favorite David Cook won "American Idol" last night, how could this happen, what with all the texting teenie-boppers? It turns out that viewership by the 12-17 demographic was down dramatically, resulting in 42 as the average age of an "American Idol" viewer. NPR had a great piece on yesterday's "Morning Edition" regarding how the show has somewhat degraded over its 7 seasons: distracted/bored judges; contestants obviously placed by the producers; and rampant product placement (feel like a Coke and a smile?).

[The Junkie's been sick for a few days but we're back] LAist has some great coverage of the Project Runway finale tonight on BRAVO @ 10:00pm so I'm not even going to touch that. If you can't stand the fashion tension, you can always switch over to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors Meeting broadcast on KLCS and your tension will be released utterly.

Idol-heads and Runway-heads have a lot to celebrate tonight and I'll be damned, look at how busy the schedule is in the 10:00-11:00pm time frame. Since I don't think any of the options are fantastic is it better to have a little or a lot of mediocrity to choose from?

The WGA is engaging in talks but that doesn't mean that the Oscars still aren't in danger. For an idea of what the economic impact of a canceled Oscars will be check out the diagram to the right from the 01/28/2008 issue of Business Week. Obviously the entire dollar amount is not exclusive to Los Angeles but a significant portion of it is localized ($26.5 million on limos, security, and gifts??). After reading some comments about the WGA strike here at LAist it's obvious that a lot of people are in pain over this but it's seems silly to me to blame the writers for the situation - this is a chance for all the affected industries to put pressure on the producers, studios, and networks to be a little less greedy.

OK so now Oprah wants her own network and she's going to get it. Remember that she is one of the four founders of the Oxygen Network, you know, that paragon of programming that now includes: The Bad Girls Club, Snapped, and the Oxygen Original movie Husband for Hire. Now she's distancing herself from that loathsome swamp of bad TV because of her new altruistic endeavor, the modestly named OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network) which replaces the Discovery Health Channel. Will the Big O stay with this for the long haul or just until something else, like a Stedman replacement, gets her attention?
