Regina Spektor @ The Greek Theatre 10/28/09

Regina Spektor emerged onto the stage of the Greek Theatre Wednesday night like a child at her first "grown up" party. Her flame-red hair hung in loose ringlets about her face, she wore a poofy white dress adorned with a cartoonish black bow, and her bright red lips suggested a slightly off-kilter leaning towards the naughty. When she spoke she seemed baffled and awed that so many people would don scarves and hats and sweaters to sit out under the stars on such a chilly October night just to see her. "Thank you," she repeated, when shouts of "I love you Regina!" or "Marry me!" or "Play 'Samson'!" gave her room to get a word in edgewise. But when she sang...

Tonight In Rock: Regina Spektor, The Watson Twins, Speech Debelle, Le Loup

Tonight Soviet-born pop folk singer-songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor will be headlining the Greek Theatre. Local country-infused folk, twin-sister duo the Watson Twins (LAist Review, #2) are poised to grace the Henry Fonda Music Box with none other than LA-based classical-violinist-turned-singer-songwriter Emily Wells. And, lastly, British rapper and 2009 Mercury Prize winner Speech Debelle will be performing at Spaceland, warming up the stage for eclectic Tel Aviv-based DJ crew Soulico. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Washington, D.C.-bred indie rock outfit Le Loup. LAist favorites, Highland Park-based psych-infused synth pop act Random Patterns are slated to kick things off.

Week In Rock: Regina Spektor, Built To Spill, Florence And The Machine, Land Of Talk

This week Soviet-born pop folk singer-songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor will be headlining the Greek Theatre. Legendary Boise-based indie rock progenitors Built To Spill are poised to take on a two-night stint at the Echoplex. And, lastly, female-fronted Québécois indie rock outfit Land of Talk will be gracing Spaceland.

Tonight In Rock: No Doubt, Regina Spektor, Band of Skulls, Obi Best

Tonight Anaheim-based ska-infused pop outfit No Doubt will be headlining the Gibson Amphitheatre with Grammy-nominated pop punk outfit Paramore and Swedish new wave rockers the Sounds in tow. Soviet-born pop folk singer-songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor is poised to perform to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre with local indie pop outfit Little Joy (LAist Review). And, lastly, local "fancy pop" songstress Obi Best (LAist Interview, Review, #2) will be gracing the Bootleg Theatre with none other than local singer-songwriter Willoughby. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch English rockers Band of Skulls, who will be ringing in their debut LP—2009's Baby Darling Doll Face Honey. LAist favorites the Useless Keys are slated to kick things off.

Fire crews are optimistic, but not yet looking to declare victory over the multiple blazes that have burned over 500,000 acres and displaced millions. We agree, it's best to be sure before declaring victory too soon. One blaze that has partially kept officials from declaring an end to the madness, the Santiago fire in Orange County, is expected to be contained by Friday. But it could take years to rebuild charred neighborhoods. Seven people...

The Fiona Apple comparisons are inevitable. As soon as Sara Bareilles opens her mouth, she reveals the vocal depth of Apple with the pop sensibility of Rachael Yamagata and Regina Spektor and the soulful sultriness of Norah Jones and Feist. In fact, on her website, she says: "I write mostly on piano and I'm a girl, so lots of people say it's Norah Jones, or Fiona Apple. That's fine. I love Norah's subtlety and...

I was lucky to catch a performance of of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players almost exactly 3 years ago in a small museum's theater north of New York city. It was a winter performance, one that the family patriarch, Jason Trachtenburg, decided to bill as "The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players: On Ice!" The "On Ice" part was performed by the family pretending to skate on and off stage and it's that kind of brazen...
