10 Reasons Why I Hate College Football

Today marks the first Saturday of the college football season. Millions across the country; especially here in the home of the #4 ranked USC Trojans and the recipient of seven votes in the AP Top 25 - UCLA Bruins, are excited to get the 2009 campaign kicked off. I, on the other hand, could couldn't care less.

ESPN Zone's Red Carpet Grand Opening Starring Pete Carroll

Just hours after saying goodbye to his quaterback, Mark Sanchez, USC football head coach Pete Carroll walked the red carpet at the grand opening of ESPN Zone at LA Live. ESPN Zone was already open, in fact, that night the place was packed with Kings and Red Wings fans grabbing a bite prior to the game, but that's what they call a "soft opening." Thursday night was the grand opening with the red carpet, bright lights and celebrities.

Tonight's episode of HBO's "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel," will investigate the Reggie Bush controversy. This segment will include an interview with Lloyd Lake, the man who claims to have given Bush $291,600 in cash, living arrangements and other benefits while he was playing at USC.

Lakers 109, Hornets 80 - Two of the hottest teams in the NBA met in New Orleans, but only one of them lived up to the billing. Los Angeles thumped the Hornets despite playing on back-to-back nights and New Orleans having several days of rest. Maybe they just got cold. The Lakers bench was key, outscoring the Hornet's reserves by 42-9. It was like the reverse of a USC game.

Kings 8, Sabres 2 - Halfway through, it looked suspiciously like an SEC football score. Los Angeles was up 7-0 midway through the second period and coasted the rest of the way, making life easy on goalie Jonathan Quick. Due to injuries, Quick was making his first appearance in the NHL. For those keeping score at home, the Kings have tried more goalies this season than they had goals against the Sabres. Only in LA...

Perspective - The question around town is clear ... "Who's going to upstage everybody next?" Tuesday night should have been about the Laker's season opener. Or was it about Kobe possibly leaving the team? Nope, the Dodgers stole the headlines when manager Grady Little resigned. Could Joe Torre and Alex Rodriguez be reunited in Blue? Or could A-Rod go to LAnaheim? Curt Schilling has expressed interest in both teams. If baseball isn't providing the big...

Angels 7, A's 6 - Francisco Rodriguez blew a save opportunity despite a three run lead. Fortunately, he was saved by Maicer Izturis' RBI single with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero took the day off and while the Halos generated plenty of offense without him, none of the 15 hits left the park. The team's recent home run slump coincides with Vlad's, who hasn't gone yard in 24 games despite...

After bringing you the coolest Nike ad that you probably will never see here in the States, we thought we'd balance it out with Adidas' brand new "Futbol meets Football" campaign. This one couldn't be any more LA as past local superstar meets future local superstar. Notice that David Beckham speaks Spanish (the video was shot in Madrid), so we know he's going to fit in here just fine. Reggie Bush looked a little...

Dodgers 10, Reds 5 - All nine Dodger starters had at least one hit or run scored, giving the team moms something to be proud of. Cincinnati's Ken Griffey, Jr. didn't disappoint, either, going deep on Mother's Day for the sixth time in his career. Ducks 4, Red Wings 3, OT - The Ducks evened the Western Conference Finals against Detroit at a game each and claimed home ice advantage heading into the next two...

Yes, that's Alex Trebek. No, he hasn't lost it. The Jeopardy! College Championships are going down at the University of Southern California and it looks like he's feeling the Spirit of Troy. College students could always use some extra cash, so one smart-Alex is going to walk away with $100,000 to pay for books and Ramen a new plasma TV and Trump steaks. A potpourri of California schools have been represented on the program this...

Even though Los Angeles doesn't have an NFL team, that doesn't mean this weekend's draft was irrelevant. Unless, of course, you're Mr. Irrelevant, but we'll get to that in a moment. Unlike most major cities in this country, LA is the only one that suffers a net loss of talent whenever the draft happens. The closest team is the San Diego Chargers, who didn't exactly have exciting picks. Choosing LSU wideout Craig Davis over USC's...

- The #1 downtown landowner, and major contributer of Mayor Tony's sure has a curious history of allegedly doing some horrible things - LA Weekly - Homelessness up in Downtown! - LA Times - Verizon's "Unlimited" EVDO plan is actually 5 Gigs a month - Cybernet - Keith Richards is now flipflopping on his snorting of coke laced with dad story - MTV - Britney to KFed "You’re the biggest mistake I’ve ever made,...

Brewers 4, Dodgers 3 - The bums are playing like it. But they can still go 160-2, right? We'll find out on Wednesday when ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound. Angels 8, Rangers 3 - Anaheim is off to a great start, and guess what? The bullpen didn't allow a run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Sammy Sosa was held to 1 for 4. Nuggest 111, Lakers 105 - Denver just took away some breathing...

Reggie Bush was the most exciting athlete LA has ever seen. In the end, he was also a fair amount of trouble for USC and some have questioned if he's a "class act." Enter OJ Mayo. Many consider this kid the brightest star in high school basketball. He's flashy and exciting, but he's been getting in a lot of trouble. This is a video from his final high school game -- a blowout victory...

What happens when you're skateboarding, hit by a car, severely injured and undergo four brain surgeries? In the case of dancer Kim Hagen, tonight a bunch of artists and musicians throw a benefit to help pay off nearly a million dollars in medical bills. If your you, ten bucks gets eight hours of live music, DJ's, and registered for some nice door prizes (like wine tastings, gift certificates and a good bottle of tequila.)...

Ducks 3, Kings 2, SO - With both local teams struggling lately, Los Angeles and Anaheim opened a weekend home-and-home series at Staples Center. The Kings tied it up with about five minutes to play, and neither team could score in overtime. The Ducks, with one of the best records in hockey, skated away with a shootout win over the Kings, with one of the worst. The scrappy rivalry featured 56 penalty minutes issued in...

Knicks 107, Lakers 106 - With time running out, the Lakers employed a brand new strategy against New York. Unofficially dubbed the "Let's not pass it to Kobe" play, Lamar Odom fired up an air ball as the clock ran out. So much for that idea. 7.1 seconds earlier, Eddy Curry slammed home the go-ahead dunk and propelled the Knicks to their 23rd win of the year -- matching last year's total with 30 games...

For as long as Pete Carroll's been head coach, the USC Trojans have consistently attracted the top high school football recruits. But Leinart and Jarrett shared a castle, Bush got his God-knows-what, and now this:Southern California is looking into whether it may have violated NCAA recruiting rules while pursuing highly rated recruit Joe McKnight, a university official said. McKnight signed a national letter of intent with USC on Wednesday and made comments during a...

Ducks 4, Stars 1 - After taking more than a week off, the Ducks returned to the ice looking HEALED! Three key players were back after suffering from injuries before the All Star break. The fresh bodies helped Anaheim recover from their recent skid and play more like their impressive season start. Spurs 96, Lakers 94, OT - The Lakers led most of the game, but not when it counted the most. Tied at 80...

Here - It was a slow day in local sports. There are no pictures from pro games because every squad had the night off. Instead, we bring you our favorite shot from Monday. If only there could be more nights without any games. Stay tuned later this morning for coverage of last night's UFC party in Hollywood. There - Apparently there was the NHL All Star game last night. Apparently it was the first...

You ruined my day, Reggie Bush. I had plans. I was going to have a great workout. I was going on a trail run from Will Rogers Park to Temescal Canyon. I was going to the Santa Monica Steps to punish my cardiovascular system while I gawk at celebrities and hardbodies. I was going to get work done. There was nothing better to do. Chicago was spanking New Orleans in the NFC Championship game. Why...

Kings 3, Blue Jackets 0 - Columbus lost their fifth road game in a row, and Mathieu Garon did everything he needed to make this one the third shut out during that stretch. He collected 26 saves for the Kings, while teammates Michael Cammalleri, Sean Avery, and Lubomir Visnovsky each notched goals. Next up, Detroit visits Los Angeles on Saturday. Clippers 110, Heat 95 - The Clippers were still without an injured Sam Cassell, but...

Didn't mommy tell you to stop playing with those bears? They're bound to hurt you sometime soon. Tommy Trojan, you stupid bastard. You don't even know what's coming, do you? UCLA M. Football has been gearing up for the game of the season, the age-old cross-town rivalry of epic proportions. USC and UCLA will go to battle this Saturday at 1:30pm at the Rose Bowl. This year will hopefully be more interesting than the...

Smack-talk has started again in the world’s greatest cross-town rivalry. No other city but LA can boast two of the nation’s finest sports institutions. In fact, UCLA and USC are #1 and #2 in NCAA championships for all sports. But nothing gets All-American blood pumping like football. When you have an institution of 30,000+, there are bound to be some skeletons in the closet. UCLA is a sterling exception, but that’s just because they...

Reggie Bush is the New Kobe Bryant In terms of scandal. An eight month investigation has led "investigators" to the conclusion that Reggie and his family accepted over $100,000 in itemized bribes from prospective agents while he was in college. Now look, I may be a Bruin, and I may love Bruin football and despise Trojan football with all my heart and soul - but you gotta' love Reggie. Reggie Bush is and will...

The report of USC's demise was entirely exaggerated. As much talk that was going around about how the Trojans were not the same team, you would have a hard time convincing the Arkansas Razorbacks and their fans. Not unlike the behind the woodshed beating the Razorbacks received at the hands of Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and LenDale White last year, this year's "less talented" team came through and managed only a 50-14 victory. New...

The NFL Draft produced the usual drama and surprises. Starting with the fall of Reggie Bush to number two after the announcement by the Houston Texans that they signed North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to a 6 year $54 million deal...jeez.

Trouble on the horizon? Or just a minor bump on the way to a bright future. Right now we dont know, but the Pac-10 conference will find out. An investigation into the dealings of a house that was leased by the family of Reggie Bush is proving to be a little more than just a minor bother. Bush says there is nothing illegal about how his family leased the house.

Apparently Matt Leinart has no interest in competing for 'Golden Boy' status with Tom Brady. Still a few weeks from even being drafted, USC's Leinart has already fired his agent and, according to Nikki Finke, will join CAA as their first sports signee after the required 5-day nfl grace period ends.
