On September 9th, the Santa Monica Pier celebrated its Centennial. Fireworks lit up the sky and thousands of people gathered to honor a landmark that seems to be synonymous not only with Santa Monica, but with Los Angeles, and our love affair with having fun at the edge of the Pacific Ocean

Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano toured LAX and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with local officials to her side asking to money to upgrade security infrastructure in the area.

And By 2012, the new law will ban any truck that doesn’t meet the cleanest 2007 emission standards, ultimately taking 16,000 dirty-diesel trucks off the road. The trucking industry fought the plan saying it would "place an unconstitutional and unfair economic burden on port truckers." Compliance checks were in order today but cargo was reportedly moving smoothly.

A multi-year study conducted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District has found that cancer risk from air pollution is down overall by 8 percent. However, some areas of the region have an increased risk.

A man who ran a red light in South LA led police on a chase that ended in the Harbor area, more specifically off the Port of Los Angeles' Berth 194 in the water. For fifteen minutes, he "stood shirtless on his van's roof, dove into the water and eluded officers by swimming around for 15 minutes," according to KCBS. Finally, he boarded a Los Angeles Fire Department boat and was taken into custody.

Oh, that nefarious and elusive Osama bin Laden is at it again... Someone tagged the side of a cargo container of a truck that arrived at the Long Beach Harbor. It read "Anthrax a gift from Osama." The mid-morning incident prompted a hazardous materials investigation while normal operations continued at the port after the truck was brought to a more secluded area. "The truck driver told authorities the container was picked up in nearby Wilmington and was empty." reported KNBC.
