Today Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego wraps up a week of wacky costumes, events, panels, and general fandemonium. This year the toy section has grown into a collectors wonderland. In addition to the exclusives by STRANGEco, Super7, and Pullip, Michele Reverte checked out merchandise by Gama-Go, Tokidoki, Kidrobot, and found a place to play Nintendo DS.
Stores and restaurants are popping up everywhere. These temporary spaces turn shopping and eating into an adventure. At Royal/T in Culver City, the Poketo Pop-Up Shop is filled with original art and colorful designs and a special pix-fixe Poketo menu is being served in the cafe.
The art gallery Poketo and Royal/T are teaming up tonight for a Karaoke Dance Party from 8 pm-1 am at Royal/T. Dance or sing. The choice is yours. If you sign up for karaoke, there’s a chance you could be Poketo’s first Karaoke Idol -- and walk away with some pretty sweet prizes. Poketo’s pop-up shop open will be open all night as well as Royal/T’s cafe and bar, serving beer, wine, and Poketo's Japanese street food inspired menu throughout the evening. The Getty Museum presents Women Twirling: Jo Ann Callis, Gay Block and Catherine Opie in Coversation tonight at 7 pm. The three photographers talk about “art, life, and domesticity on the occasion of the exhibition Jo Ann Callis: Woman Twirling,” which is on view through August 9 at the Getty Center. In the exhibit, salt shakers, gloves, and doughnuts become sensual and ominous. Women twirl, do handstands, emerge from water. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Downtown LA’s Poketo Studio is hosting an evening of art and music in the show “Bang! Bang! Draw!” tonight at 7 pm. Her Space Holiday will kick the night off with a live performance followed by a moderated Q&A session with the pop outfit and Tokyo-based illustrator-designer Heisuke "PCP" Kitazawa. The official art show and party follows right after until 10 pm. Admission is free and desserts and drinks will be provided.
