Not too long ago I had a chance to meet Jonathan Gold, the Pulitzer award winning food writer for the LA Weekly. I know what you're thinking, did I ask him for a recommendation? Of course I did! This is one of two places he recommended to me personally, and I'm so excited to finally come visit this place. Mon Land is a Mongolian hotpot place with some Northern Chinese cuisine tossed in for good......

One of the first steps to fighting a problem is informing the public of what's legally right and wrong. After yesterday's meeting of the Regional Paparazzi Taskforce led by LA City Councilmember Dennis Zine, the group released this one page document highlighting laws paps break on a regular basis to score that big money shot (laws cited are state, Los Angeles, Malibu and Beverly Hills). But what's a little ticket or some short jail time......

The Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks just completed a home-and-home series with the Ducks taking away the victories in both of the pre-season contests. On Tuesday, Chris Kunitz score the game-winner in a shootout for a 2-1 win and last night Chris Pronger scored the game-winner at 3:04 into overtime for a 3-2 Ducks decision. We were at Staples Center on Tuesday and captured some photos on a brand spankin' new Canon EOS......

Oscar Moller scored during a power play goal-mouth scramble with 1:17 remaining to give the Los Angeles Kings a 6-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night in the opening day of their pre-season competition. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the other half of the Kings beat the St. Louis Blues, putting the Kings in first place. But don't get too used to it since this is a rebuilding season, and the Kings are on......

The Melting Pot was recommended to me as a place for a special occasion, and since this past Sunday was an anniversary of sorts, we found ourselves here, on the second floor overlooking Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena.......

The annual Extravaganza for the Senses, a fund-raising tasting event benefitting the Saban Free Clinic previously mentioned here on LAist was held this past Saturday in Century City on the Fox lot. I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend and have returned with some photos for our readers. I'll be the first to admit that these photos don't really do the event justice, these photos were taken with camera in one hand,......

Now in its fourth year, Punk Rock Social is a monthly event at Alex's Bar in Long Beach. This past weekend, they held the CD release for the Cute Lepers. LAist Featured Photos contributor Michael Zampelli checked it out, took these wonderful photos and came back with this to say. "The show openers, Prima Donna, were poser-pop and even covered a Beatles song. The joke band of the night was Black Fag, who did a......

Nearly 100 taiko drummers from across California congregated on the stage at the Ford Amphitheatre this weekend. LA-based Kitsune Taiko, Yukai Taiko, Isshin Taiko, and Bombu Taiko took turns performing the 4,000-year-old Buddhist drumming style and later, Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka -- credited with bringing taiko to the U.S. 40 years ago -- and San Francisco Taiko Dojo took over the night. TAIKOPROJECT's Rhythmic Relations 2008 continues tonight at the Ford at 8 p.m. John......

My search for hard core seafood at casual prices continues, we have a pretty solid place lined up for today. Captain Kidd's in Redondo Beach is half seafood market, half restaurant. It's a little confusing, but there are three lines. One line is for drinks -- they have a good selection of beers on tap. The line in the back is where you can order combo plates or most anything else you'd like --......

In addition to providing you with an excellent cardio and lower-body workout, the Hollywoodland Staircases Walk also has amazing views of the city, the landscape, and two major landmarks (the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory). Throw some local history (concrete staircases joining hilly residential streets installed in 1923 as part of the Hollywoodland real estate development) and a wide variety of architecture and you have more for your eyes to drink in than you bargained......

Some of you might be familiar with Lee's sandwiches. It's a chain of Vietnamese Sandwich shops around San Gabriel and Westminster. If you're not familiar with Lee's Sandwiches, you might be wondering: "What's so special about Vietnamese sandwiches, and how is it worthy of a 50meal?" Well, first of all, a 10-inch sandwich is dirt cheap at somewhere between $2 to $3. Secondly, these sandwiches are GOOD. Hey, cheap and good? Definitely worth a meal.......

Photo by GarySe7en via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr On Friday, June 20th, the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific will reach its one-decade milestone. In honor of the occasion, they have launched a year-long celebration at the marine life-themed attraction with various events, contests, exhibits, and features centered around the number 10. The ten-sanity is abundant: You can find out their picks for their top 10 favorite animals, catch their 10th......

There were nearly as many people on stage as in the crowd at the Echo last night to witness the phenomenon that was a 35-minute set from Dark Meat, the 17-piece psychedelic rock collective from Athens, Georgia. Dark Meat has been tearing up small venues in the South for a few years. Now signed to Vice Records, this orgiastic cacophony of punk vocals, horns, gospel, double drums, and manic prancing on the dance floor made......

The difference between last year and this year was night and day. Last year, the police were in riot gear, got injured, shot rubber bullets into crowds full of innocent people including, children, the elderly and reporters live on air (see this video). This year, the LAPD retrained and chilled out... a lot more. By the end of the day, only five people had been arrested. Earlier May Day Photo Essays include: Portraits, Crowds and......

Dong Il Jang is highly ranked on Yelp and is one of the oldest Korean restaurants in Los Angeles. It also happens to be one of the higher-end Korean places in K-town. It is a little pricier than the usual cheap Korean places I go to, but you see it reflected both in the atmosphere and the presentation of the food. I'm looking to get away from strictly Korean Barbecue and go for more variety......

Hey, there, beer fans! The word is out on the street, Father's Office II in Culver City finally opens its doors tonight! You heard me. Rumors say 5pm. Our coverage of the preview party probably left you wanting more but starting tonight you get to see it for yourself, taste the gastropub fare goodness for yourself, choose from what looks to be a gazillion beers on tap and guzzle, I mean, savor, for yourself.......

Al Gelato sits on Robertson in the southern part of Bevely Hills. It came recommended from a couple of friends, but I initially had doubts because it was billed more as a dessert place, but hey, if they have cake and pizza and gelato all in one place, who am I to complain? The pre-meal bread is huge! It's got a thin crust and very soft and fluffy insides. They plop down a plate of......

Surprisingly, the West Side has quite a few impressive barbecue joints, which are hole-in-the-walls. One of these is Mr. Cecil's California Ribs. We found it on Pico Blvd., one block west of Bundy Ave. The restaurant sits in this unique, little, round building. The tables are few, but the place is very cozy. The menu feels slightly limited, but maybe our eyes skipped some parts of it because we knew exactly what we wanted...RIBS......

Baby spinach adorns the NY White pizza above, Porco pizza shown underneath. Two of my friends have been raving about this supposed "real Italian/napolitana" pizza in Monterey Park, and after months of accumulated hype I decided to give in and drive 20 miles just for fucking pizza. I even took five other friends in tow for the expedition to Monterey Park, the hotbed for all great cheap eats -- some of my favorites include......

Photo by highervision via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr This evening a public viewing will be held for slain LA High football star Jamiel Shaw, with funeral services to follow tomorrow. Shaw's tragic murder has prompted many LA residents to refocus on the senselessness of gang-related violence. I wake up every morning with the weather and traffic reports on ABC7 Eyewitness News. (My boyfriend and I love to share a fresh pot of coffee every morning and gently guffaw at Garth Kemp's goofball antics and shameless puppy-promotion.) This morning, no joke, the weather report was one word: "Perfect." Yup, sunny, clear, and 77 degrees. When I came off the freeway this morning, I could see down the Hollywood hills straight through to......

After a 5-month investigation, the Associated Press found that Los Angeles drinking water has traces of Anti-epileptic and anti-anxiety medications. "To be sure," the AP noted "the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose." Across the nation, the report found tainted water supplies in 24 major metropolitan areas, five of those in California: Los Angeles: 2 (meprobamate and phenytoin)......
