Found in LA: Los Angeles is Burning!

Forget the gap-toothed grins and the wide-eyed haunted faces; what says Los Angeles on Halloween more than Los Angeles itself on a Jack O'Lantern? LAist readers and Featured Photos pool contributors Sadie and Allison Crabtree set the city on fire...on the faces of their pumpkins. The iconic Hollywood sign gleams while the Griffith Observatory sits majestically on their pumpkin-y perches. Of course, we don't ever want to see those hills burn quite so close to those landmarks--but on a day that's about illusion, trickery, and the darker side, well, why not?

Found in LA: An International Tableau

This photograph looks like it could have been taken anywhere. There was just something so timeless and universal about this moment. Evening had not yet become night, so it was still, but with a quiet bustle all around. Businesses were closing down, carpets were being shaken out and pails of water were being dumped. It's not Bangkok. It's not Mexico City. It's the alley behind Mozza.

Found in LA: The Mayor's Weiner

We have Pink's Hot Dogs to thank for this one. We get it, OK? Jalapeno dog. Chili. Onions. Guacamole. Villaraigosa is spicy. Caliente. You will probably have really bad breath after chomping on the mayor's weiner. But what's up with lettuce? Lettuce doesn't belong on a hot dog. It's so wrong. And where's the cheese? This dog should definitely be cheesy. What's most amazing is that this hotdog doesn't come with ham. In fact, this dog should just be a big ham stuffed inside of a...no, we won't go there.

Postcard from the Edge (of the Ocean): Your 'Moment of Zen'

To borrow from The Daily Show, but to draw more from its non-satirical roots, this is a glimpse of a true California moment of zen. Taken at Salt Creek Beach, Dana Point. If you put your face close enough to the monitor you might be able to catch a whiff of the ocean air. Then again, you might just look like a tool. Better bet: Hit the beach and chill out.

How to Win Patriots and Influence Consumers: 'Buy American'

Thinking of purchasing a car? Your options remain plentiful, and deals are readily available as the auto industry is eager to make sales in these rough economic times. But if you happened to be headed to Universal City Nissan, a sign on the hill above the dealership might have you thinking twice about your decision to go with the import.

Found in LA: America's Armpit Analogy, With Spellcheck

With an ailing economy in the era of prolific self-expression via a multitude of platforms, sometimes the best way to be heard is to grab some paper and a pen and put the message up on your own four wheels. This is what one San Fernando Valley resident seems to be fond of doing, as found byLAist Featured Photos pool contributor CookieDuster, who explains the sign-maker's most recent foray into their version of Twittering:

The neighbor is riled up enough again to post his first tailgate message since election day. A total lack of punctuation and a spelling mistake only adds to the charm.

Found in LA: Snowman Beached in Santa Monica

Okay, random. LAist reader Jon Zack was walking on the beach yesterday when he saw this 5 foot plaster-made snowman between the walking path and the water. "He looked happy, but a little melty," he joked.

Found in LA: On the Skids in Style

You know those movies, where there is a serial killer out there, and only one man who can catch him? But that one guy is an ex-cop who got on the bottle after a serial killer murdered his wife. And he's living in some cheap apartment putting whiskey on his cornflakes now. So the one guy on the force who believes in him has to go hunt him down and clean him up and then the ex-cop gets his act together and hunts down the killer who turns out to be the same guy who killed his wife! Maybe he starts dating one of the female cops, or the DA or something, and they have a lover's quarrel and he gives up. Then the serial killer kidnaps her and he has to prove he can beat the bottle and they have a big shootout on the docks and the ex-cop is the hero. Well, this apartment is totally where they go to find the ex-cop on the skids. If anyone from the studios wants to contact me, my email is on the staff page. We could even make it a buddy movie if you guys want.

Found in LA: Liability is a Bitch

Found at a park within Park La Brea where the going rental rate of a 580 square foot studio starts near $1200.

As the "Big Three" American automakers and the federal government get closer to determining what kind of bailout--if any--the struggling businesses can receive, things don't seem to be all that much better for overseas rival Toyota.

Found in the skies above Beverly Hills, this is quite possibly one of the better Christmas trees around town. Well, at least better than this one.

What's stronger than a Trojan condom?

Mick Orlosky, who blogs at his own site called redfishingboat and is an LAist Featured Photos contributor on Flickr, submitted this beautiful and surreal photo that he snapped yesterday. "You could walk it, take some five six hours," he wrote in the title space of the photo.

Here's one of those great photo juxtaposition Los Angeles moments. A voter marks her ballot this morning as a surfer heads for the water at a polling place at Venice Beach lifeguard headquarters.

Next week's election presents a tough choice for some, although others have known for sometime which option is more suited to their taste. Here the dilemma gets a sweeter treatment, in the form of McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden chocolates for your choosing, as caught by LAist Featured Photos contributor C-Monster. These confection candidates were found in Laguna Niguel at Downey's Chocolates--we don't know which one is more delicious, but we did get to sample their nonpartisan--but artisan--chocolates a few weeks ago at the Luxury Chocolate Salon.

With the November election approaching, people are doing whatever they can to get the message out. This photo, taken in Silver Lake came to LAist in our Tips inbox, and shows one truck owner's way of spreading the "No on 8" message. Bumper sticker, button, and t-shirt makers take notice: "Love, Not 8" is tres catchy, yes?

Found in Downtown Los Angeles

"No seriously. I found them like this," exclaimed LAist Featured Photos Member on Flickr, coffeextv, of the stuffed turtles she found at Hyperion and Fountain on Sunday.

Caught in San Pedro at the fountain with the dancing waters show. See a video of it in action below.

If you happened to see some serious goat-on-grass action Monday at 4th and Hill Streets in Downtown, your eyes were not deceiving you. There were, indeed, 100 goats put there deliberately--not as some Fraternity prank--to help clear the lot of overgrowth. LAist Featured Photos contributor Jonathan Alcorn (aka Sundogg) grabbed this great goat shot for us, and explains (via the LA Times):

Sep 09, 2008 - Los Angeles, California, USA - A herd of goats has been hired by the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency to clear away thick weeds on a steep slope at the corner of 4th and Hill streets, next to the Angels Flight. Agency officials said the goats were cheaper and more environmentally friendly than a human brush clearing crew with gas powered weed whackers. Downtown office workers and other passersby gather to watch the goats eating on the slope.
It comes down to pure economics; renting the goats costs $3,000, whereas renting people would cost around $7, 500. The goats are expected to chow down on the hillside for ten days, but don't go near them--they are covered in poison oak (and surrounded by an electrified fence). Once the hillside is cleared it will become "the site of a third mixed-use California Plaza tower."

Flickr user riptheskull, or Dave, uploaded a slew of vintage postcards from California. On his off time, he goes to flea markets, auctions, yard sales and Ebay to try to build his collections, according to his profile. Some his recent finds were of Los Angeles...

No, your eyes don't deceive you; that is a train locomotive dangling over a wall! LAist Featured Photos Pool contributor bcmacsac1 shared this vintage photo from early 1948 of this scary accident that almost took out a landmark restaurant. He explains:

The only major accident for the Super Chief was recorded on January 25,1948 when the locomotive #19L, leading the Super Chief loses braking ability while preparing to depart* Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal Crashing through a steel bumper post and then a concrete wall located at the end of the dead end track and ultimately comes to a rest with the front half of the locomotive dangling 20 feet above the street below with no injuries to the people on board. This locomotive almost dropped in for lunch at the famous PHILIPPE'S the ORINGINAL french dip sandwich shop across the street when it was located on Aliso street. Currently located at Alameda and Ord St
According to an LA Times article from the following day, it took 5 hours and a 250-ton crane to get the locomotive back on the track and then over to the roundhouse for inspection. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

LAist Featured Photos Flickr contributor PRIME IMAGERY >gianni< submits this perfect California car backside. Does it get more Cali than this? Welcome to the ObamApplVo, as the photographer calls it.

There's a little sporting event going on in Los Angeles tonight, just in case you hadn't heard... Of course, these folks really take being fans of our side of the NBA Finalists to a whole new level in their purple-and-gold emblazoned ride. LAist Featured Photos contributor victoriabernal snapped this shot of these Lakers uber-fans driving near the Staples Center.

Few words overcame LAist Featured Photos contributor concheven when he posted this photo taken in Venice over the weekend: "I love LA."

Even the animals in L.A. get top notch chefs cooking for them. Well, they do at least once a year in a preview for the Beastly Ball, an annual bash at the LA Zoo for the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, a non-profit that supports the city's zoo. This year, the gala celebrates the California Condor Recovery Project and takes place on June 14 with tickets at $1000. Restaurants taking part include Yamashiro, Typhoon, Pink's, El Cholo, Fabiolus Café and others.

LAist Featured Photos contributor Michael Zara, aka monkeytime, took this photo on Main Street in Santa Monica and makes an interesting observation:

You may not know LAist Featured Photos Flickr contributor discarted's name or even what he looks like when he snaps a shot of you on Hollywood Blvd., but trust us, he's there, always documenting the people on the street, especially those who frequent it daily. Above, he captures a raw and silly moment with two of the many professional dress-up characters seen on the famous boulevard during some off-duty time.
