Pencil This In: Cantastoria Performance @ Manual Archives, Art Around Town and...Neil Diamond Exhibit!

Now here's something you don't get a chance to see everyday: “Mild Light: An evening of Cantastoria from the Performance Department of the Museum of Everyday Life” comes to the Manual Archives tonight. "Cantastoria" involves the display of representational paintings accompanied by sung narration. Clare Dolan, Chief Operating Philosopher of the Museum of Everyday Life (Vermont), will demonstrate the "versatility and saucy immediacy of this performance form, with stories ranging from accounts of bloody crime in the 1930's written by Bertolt Brecht, to the dilemmas of a modern-day heroine trying to make a living and achieve total happiness." There are two shows tonight at 8 and 10 pm. Tickets are $12/$8.

Pencil This In: Twilight Dance Series in Santa Monica, A Chandler Signs at Vroman's

The Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series kicks off tonight at 7 pm at the pier. Tonight’s free concert features the Playing for Change Band -- an Internet project that enlisted musicians from all over the world in a viral video and led to the creation of a CD that benefits street musicians and homeless populations. Also on the bill: Bushman (Jamaican Roots Reggae). So bring a picnic and your dancing shoes.

NewFilmmakers LA screens “Youth Knows No Pain + 5 Short Films” tonight at 6:30 pm at Sunset Gower Studios. At 7 pm, there’s a screening of Mitch McCabe’s documentary Youth Knows No Pain, followed at 8:45 pm by the short films: Old Dogs (Dir. Jonathan Fahn) Propel (Dir. Jay Gammill) The Dying Western (Dir. Michael Kortlander) A Kolor to Kill for (Dir. Tim Hall). Guest will have the opportunity to mingle with the directors and participate in an audience Q&A session. Tickets are a bargain at $6 which includes screening ticket and free open bar and appetizers all evening.

Pencil This In: Pete Wilson Discusses California's Problems; Japanese Street Fare @ Royal/T

Joe Mathews, Irvine Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, moderates a Zócalo forum tonight with former Gov. Pete Wilson at 7 pm at the RAND Corporation. When Wilson was governor, California’s education system was in shambles, interest groups had a tight grip on Sacramento, health care costs soared, and the economy just sucked. Sound familiar? "While Wilson may be best remembered for his more controversial stances—like supporting Proposition 187, which sought to refuse services to illegal immigrants; he also managed to pass budgets and break partisan stalemates, ultimately leaving his successor a budget surplus." In this program bluntly titled, "Was Pete Wilson Right?" Wilson himself will talk about the issues facing California today. Admission to the event is free, but reservations are recommended. There will be a hosted wine reception after the program.

Ghettogloss' Last Event in Silver Lake Via an e-mail blast today, the art gallery Ghettogloss is moving to a new and improved location on Melrose. That means tonight is the last night to enjoy their Silver Lake location. They want fans to come by and have cocktail to toast their final days in the neighborhood. It goes from 8 p.m. to midnight. Pencil This In: Artistic Teens and Free Movies Outdoors

Drawings and paintings created by dozens of Ryman Arts program participants will be on display at the California African American Museum through July 12. Ryman Arts is a highly acclaimed, no cost, art program aimed at Los Angeles area teens and operating on the campus of USC. The program helps talented youth develop their artistic talents and evidenced in this exhibit. Free admission.

You know it's summer in LA when Highland in Hollywood becomes even more of a traffic nightmare than usual when the Hollywood Bowl "officially" opens. (We guess the annual Playboy Jazz Festival is the unofficial opening?) Tonight, there's a star-studded opening night gala with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Josh Groban, who'll be inducted during the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will be conducted by Thomas Wilkins, with guest performers Roger Daltrey, Angélique Kidjo, Frederica von Stade and Trisha Yearwood. Tickets are $17-$103.

Pencil This In: Cirque Berzerk Opens Tonight, Penn & Teller Talk

The highly-anticipated two-week run for Cirque Berzerk returns to the old "Not a Cornfield" state park beginning tonight. It’s a mixture of burlesque, the bizarre and circus tricks that you’ve probably never seen before. The shows are filled with “sinewy, breathtaking acrobatics, sensual aerialists, gothic stilt walkers, fetishy burlesque dancers, voluptuous contortionists and a host of punk rock clowns, none of whom know how to make cute balloon animals for the kiddies.” Get your tickets NOW. The Hammer Museum presents a lecture by artist and photographer Stephen Berkman tonight at 7 pm. He’ll discuss his work, which uses antiquated photographic and optical processes. “Berkman, currently a teacher at the Art Center of Design, will also discuss his quixotic art in the context of the early history of the photographic medium, including phenomenology, spirit photography, and the technical processes used to achieve them.” The lecture is a related program to “The Darker Side of Light” exhibition. The public program is free, but tickets are required. Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6 pm.

The Grammy Museum welcomes veteran singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw for “The Drop” -- a program where musicians talk about their recently or upcoming releases. Crenshaw will discuss and perform selections from his newest album Jaggedland. He’ll be in conversation with Museum Executive Director Robert Santelli about the songwriting, collaboration, and production behind his first new studio recording in six years. He’ll also take a few questions from the audience. The event begins at 8 pm tonight, and tickets are $14.95 ($12 for members).

Pencil This In: Machine Project Says Buh Bye to Analog TV, but Hello LA Pride Weekend

Machine Project is hosting a “Farewell to Analog TV” lecture and mixer tonight at 10 pm. Jason Torchinsky will talk about mechanical televisions, which will be followed by a countdown to the demise of analog TV. At midnight, all the old analog television broadcasts will stop, replaced by digital signals so all the TVs without converter boxes won’t work anymore. Machine Project will be gathering a pyramid of old TVs together for a countdown as they go to static, all at once.

The Wooster Group returns to REDCAT tonight with La Didone, a daring production of Francesco Cavalli's 1641 Baroque opera mashed up with elements of Italian director Mario Bava's 1965 sci-fi cult film Terrore nello spazio (Planet of the Vampires). This West Coast premiere of La Didone runs through June Tonight’s performance begins at 8:30 pm, and tickets are $40-55, with student discounts available.

Check 'em out: TALK* Legendary film director/producer Roger Corman, whose works include the original Little Shop of Horrors (1960) and Deathrace 2000 (1975), has written his autobiography How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime. He’ll talk about his filmmaking, his book and other topics with Aïda Ruilova, a filmmaker known for her "gothic aesthetic." This free program begins at 7 pm.

The Grammy Museum’s new live series “The Drop” interviews artists with new albums. Tonight at 8 pm the museum welcomes Nanci Griffith to discuss her new album, The Loving Kind, the day before its release. She’ll be in coversation with museum Executive Director Robert Santelli about the songwriting, newsworthy inspirations and studio approach to the album. After the interview, Griffith will take questions from the audience and sign copies of the album. Tickets are $14.95; $12 for members.

Pencil This In: Art, Art and More Art Plus 'Iron Chef' Tuna

There are two exhibits opening tonight at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art in WeHo. In the rear gallery, “Mood Swings” features seven of the urban world’s best emerging and recognized artists - Asbestos (Dublin, Ireland), Cena7 (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Fefe Talavera (Sao Paulo), Imminent Disaster (New York), Labrona (Montreal, Canada). SoCal artists representing are Oddzoo (LA) and Bumblebee (Downey). Israeli artist Know Hope has an installation "the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)" that includes 30,000 paper raindrops, 40,000 feet of fishing twine, 2,500 fishing weights and hundreds of sheets of cardboard fashioned into miniature works of art and life-size cut-out characters. The opening receptions run 7-10 pm tonight, and the exhibits run until July 2.

Pencil This In: Dangerous News and Spotting Real Stars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences puts on a special screening of some recent documentaries at the Linwood Dun Theatre tonight, and it is free. Show begins at 7 PM and will feature the following works: Salim Baba by Tim Sternberg, Weijun Chen's Please Vote for Me and My Kid Could Paint That by Amir Bar-Lev. The films cover unique topics ranging from the life of a man dedicated to helping entertain kids via film to a theoretical free election in China and the works of a four year old art genius.

The Ford’s kicks off summer with its first J.A.M. (Jazzed and Motivated) Session of the season tonight at 7 pm. The free, interactive events are guided by artists, musicians and dancers, all Ford artists. Bring the whole family down for a little “Zydeco Inzanity” with dance instructor by Karen Redding of LouisianaDanceLA.com tonight. She’ll teach basic bayou moves to Creole accordion accompaniment. Tonight’s the opening night for Cole Porter’s Red, Hot and Blue! at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks. This Depression era screwball comedy deals with a National Lottery offering a first prize to anyone who finds a long-lost love with a rare identification mark. Included are the Cole Porter classics "It's De-Lovely," "Down in the Depths (On the 90th Floor)," "Ridin' High" and "Red, Hot and Blue!" The show begins at 8 pm tonight and runs through July 5.

Pencil This In: 'Barack Obama: The Freshman,' Reading and Blues @ Stories

Believe it or not, Shepard Fairey’s work isn’t in this art exhibit. M+B gallery presents the first exhibit of never-before-seen photographs of President Barack Obama from his freshman year Occidental College. (Eagle Rock in the house!) Lisa Jack, then a photo student at Oxy, sought a striking subject for a portrait project and was tipped off about a charismatic student named “Barry” Obama. Little did anyone know that 28 years later, the subject would become the 44th President of the United States. The opening reception (with eco-friendly cocktails provided by Veev) will be held tonight from 6-9 pm. “Barack Obama: The Freshman” runs until July 18.

Pencil This In: Short Play Competition @ Theatre Asylum, Afghanistan: Obama's Vietnam? @ the Hammer

THEATRE* ShortLived 2.0 is SF-based PianoFight’s short playwriting competition, and it’s making its LA debut as ShortLived LA at 8 pm tonight at Theatre Asylum. Tickets are $15-$20. Last week, eight original pieces written by local LA writers hit the stage; the highest scoring piece will automatically get a spot in the SF Championship Weekend for a chance to win the grand prize: an invitation to pen a full-length piece produced by PianoFight and staged for a one-month in San Francisco.

Kinda quiet on the event front on the Memorial Day, so here are a few ideas for those of you who aren't 'cuing it up at home today. FILM BBQ The 5 Minutes Game & Cinefamily Memorial Day BBQ happens at 6 pm tonight at the SIlent Movie Theatre. “What we're gonna do is choose fifteen movies you've likely never seen before (with most, if not all the films unavailable on DVD), line 'em up, and only show you the first five minutes of each, not counting their opening credits. After all that, you, the audience, gets to vote on which film out of the fifteen we all then watch in its entirety.” Bring something to cook on the Cinefamily Grill. Tickets are $10, and the 'cue starts at 6 pm.

Pencil This In: 'Women Twirling' at the Getty, LACE Fundraiser

The Getty Museum presents Women Twirling: Jo Ann Callis, Gay Block and Catherine Opie in Coversation tonight at 7 pm. The three photographers talk about “art, life, and domesticity on the occasion of the exhibition Jo Ann Callis: Woman Twirling,” which is on view through August 9 at the Getty Center. In the exhibit, salt shakers, gloves, and doughnuts become sensual and ominous. Women twirl, do handstands, emerge from water. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Pencil This In: Hot Latin Sounds, Car Chases and Interactive Comedy

Tobacco and rum, two things traditionally associated with the Caribbean, especially Cuba. It is also the name of a hot local salsa band, only in Spanish -- Tabaco y Ron. Tonight, they help kick off the 11th Annual Salsa Congress which runs from Thursday through Sunday. Tabaco y Ron will headline the kickoff party tonight at The Proud Bird near LAX.
