Since the recent opening of LACMA's Broad Contemporary (BCAM) a flurry of international eyes have been on Los Angeles, and an ensuing flurry of words have issued forth in review. It seems irresistible to review the Broad without also reviewing the city that houses it, which was precisely the tact taken by Chris Haslam in London's Sunday Times today.

What's life like when you guys are touring?


life is good on the road. it is generally exciting and it beats working bars in victoria. my only complaint is that there is often very little time to see the city we are playing in by day. night is for working and day is for sleeping in a van when touring.

When can Los Angeles expect a show from you guys?


2007 is the year for joh to take it south goddammit! nothing official to report though. we played LA twice in support of our debut EP, but we've yet to play it on this first full-length (Bridges). hopefully that'll change soon.

Your album Bridges is hot, tell us about it?


hot...like "oooo that's hot, too hot for the hot tub....yeooooow." may he rest in peace. or was that only from eddie murphy's spoof as the godfather of soul? not sure. in all seriousness, it's an album we're proud of...it's about movement and journeying, and we tried to infuse it with an hypnotic quality like taking a roadtrip. But we also honor the great songwriting traditions, hence a memorable melody is always at the base of everything we do (or at least we hope).

How did you dudes hook up with Neil Osborne?


We did some touring with neil's band 54/40 when we were younger. we played in a different incarnation of joh. he was always very friendly and supportive of the young up and comers. when it came time to choose a producer for the first full length jets record we new we wanted someone with a songwriting background and someone who new what they liked. someone who was ready to voice their opinion - good or bad. plus he wrote 'ocean pearl'...one of my personal faves.

What artists has influenced the bands sound?


the doves, radiohead, simon and garfunkel, oasis. just to name a few.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is one of Downtown Los Angeles' most beautiful landmarks. Enjoy these photos but understand that you should experience the Cathedral in person. We recommend a visit from all, Catholic and non-Catholic alike.

Someone walked off with Gregory Peck's star on Hollywood Boulevard sometime between Nov. 17 and Nov. 22, says Hollywood's honorary Mayor Johnny Grant. Authorities believe the perp (yeah, we know we watch too much Law & Order) used a cement saw to hack off one of the Boulevard's original stars. Begs the question, didn't anyone notice a saw being used? And why didn't anyone notice sooner?

What is going on with Shakespeare Festival Los Angeles? First they announce that they are low on money and may not be able to do their summer outdoor performances in Pershing Square. Then they announce that they will have a performance after all, on the plaza of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and that the play will be The Comedy of Errors. They just did The Comedy of Errors in 2001. It was a competent, accessible performance of what is basically a piece of Shakespearean fluff. Given a potential selection of 37 Shakespeare plays, they do The Comedy of Errors again just four years later?

We started off the tour by hopping on the Metro Red Line. LAist loves the Red Line; we embrace its shortcomings, we sometimes laugh at its futility, but we use it when we can. We definitely use it when we go downtown. So we joined the folks carrying their LA Marathon banners and took the train down to Pershing Square. First stop on the tour was the Grand Central Market. We'd never heard of this place until recently, and we were curious to see how it might stack up to the famous Pike Place Market that we'd recently roamed. Even though it was early Sunday morning, the sawdust-covered floors were packed with folks eager for a taste of some of the savory food being served up at the stalls. We weren't ready to eat, though the aroma of Chinese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Italian dishes were enticing, and the aisles of bulk spices, gleaming produce, and sugary treats looked beautiful, we settled on a modest cafe cubano near the front entrance.
