Something strange is decreasing the abundant and once bold populations of coyote's in Southern California, and it's not from this planet!

Local singer/songwriters Meiko (MySpace) and Priscilla Ahn (MySpace) share similar qualities -- they are part-Asian (Meiko is quarter-Japanese and Ahn is half-Korean), and originally from back east (Meiko from Georgia and Ahn from Pennsylvania). So perhaps it was coincidental that both were booked in back-to-back shows last week at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, with Meiko onstage last Wednesday and Ahn last Thursday.

Today, Wendy Greuel announced a top ten list of sorts on new measures to save the city millions of dollars. It's good timing. On February 5th, we go to the polls and vote on Measure S, which will determine if $270 million will be taxed on our phone bills or not. If no is the answer we give, you can probably kiss goodbye more parks and other quality of life aspects like the Governor has proposed in his budget cuts. Additionally, we're already a city that cries poor every hour, currently lachrymose with $75 million in the red ($345 if Measure S doesn't pass). And even if we were not a city with financial problems, getting fiscally lean is always responsible government.

In support of our international blogging brothers... On February 22, Kareem Amer, a twenty-two-year old Egyptian student and blogger, was sentenced without a trial to four years in jail for "contempt of religion" and "defaming the President of Egypt" because of writings on his blog. Growing up in a fundamentalist Muslim family, Amer began to rebel against what he perceived as religious extremism at his college, Al-Azhar University, through his blog writings, and was...

On February 28, 1997, two gunmen took 48 Bank of America customers and employees hostage before engaging in an intense gunfight with the LAPD. The 44-minute confrontation resulted in the wounding of twelve police officers and two civilians, as well as the death of the two perpetrators. Today at 4:00 p.m., Mayor Villaraigosa, law enforcement personnel, and elected leaders will gather to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those wounded during the shootout, and...

The Belmont Yard, aka the Belmont Tunnel, aka the Belmont Art Park has been threatened with destruction by a developer with 276 units of apartments up its corporate nose. Located off the west edge of downtown, the park has served as rare greenspace for a soccer-like game called Tarasca and as a canvas for some breathtakingly talented graffiti artists. While the rains held the bulldozers back for a short interval, the yard and its surrounding graffiti-coated walls have now been plowed into foundation-ready ground for the approved apartments. On February 9, the City Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee approved designation of the tunnel and substation (pictured) as landmarks, but exactly how anyone will see them after the new construction takes place is beyond us. For now, the best vantage point is from the 1st street bridge as it crosses second. Either that or follow the stray dogs through the gap in fence off Lucas and get a closer-up view.

As a young former cab driver, and for a year or so one of only a handful of native-English-speaking drivers to prowl the streets of LA, I feel uniquely qualified to comment on this.
