2 O.C. Charities Show Up on List of 10 Least Efficient Nationwide

Charity Navigator released their list of the country's 10 Most Inefficient charitable groups, naming two Orange County groups as some of the best for being worst. The ranking looks at the percentage of money spent versus the amount of money actually put towards supporting the cause, and those listed "spend more than $0.50 to raise each dollar in support, making them four times less efficient than the average charity. This inefficiency forces them to devote more than 40% of their budgets to fundraising, limiting the difference they can make with your dollars."

Three witnesses took the stand yesterday in the case where U.S. District Attorneys are trying former elected Orange County Sheriff Michael Corona for illegally winning his 1998 election, taking bribes and returning favors. Both a pilot and a tailor who were asked to give $1000 to his campaign and then reimbursed by friend and eventual assistant sheriff Don Haidl to avoid campaign contribution limits stood on the witness stand describing what they did and knew. In the afternoon, the accountant for Debra Hoffman, Carona's mistress, talked about their "love nest" and a secret account where they would hide their money. Carona's wife, Deborah, is also allegedly involved, but she will stand trial in a separate case later.

Once deemed as "America's Sheriff" by CNN's Larry King, former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona is now the focus of a media watched trial that began yesterday with all the stuff that make politics what it unfortunately is known for: money, bribes, power.

The OC Sheriff's are on the hunt for the 250 pounds of explosives that were swiped from a locked container in the remote Blackstar Canyon early last week. According to abc7.com, "the explosives had been stored for years in harsh conditions and are unstable," and authorities are warning the public that they pose a serious danger to anyone who goes near them. The Sheriff's Department are asking that the thief or thieves get in touch with them so that the blasting powder and other explosive material can be disposed of properly.

From a weekend heatwave to a rainy and snowy day in Southern California. A reader wrote in an e-mail to us "It's hailing! But it only lasted a second here in Northridge."

*UPDATE, Monday, March 10, 11:10 a.m.: The woman was on dry ice, apparently for 'religious reasons' and does not appear to be murdered. Full story can be found here.

Two incidents that took place yesterday in parts of Orange County turned deadly and claimed two lives and injured others.

Despite having returned back to his post just two weeks ago, today Orange County's beleagured Sheriff Michael Carona, announced his retirement from the job on the Department's blog. Carona is entwined in a mess of legal troubles that extend to include his wife and his mistress, Deborah Carona and Debra Hoffman, respectively, in its web.

  • The storm has claimed one fatality thus far, as a woman in her 20s was caught in a flash flood that swept her away as she sat in her vehicle. The LA Times explains what happened to the victim and her companion, who survived:
At about 1 a.m., [she] made a one-minute 911 cellphone call that led officers to the scene before the call was disconnected [...] When officers arrived, they found her male companion, Rene Valencia, 36, of Corona, several hundred yards south clinging to a tree [...]

  • Authorities in Anaheim are working on putting together the pieces of a very disturbing puzzle they uncovered on Thursday on North Lemon Street near the 91 Freeway.

If you want to drive the 91 Express Lanes during peak, peak rush hour, it's going to cost you. A lot.

California Highway Patrol Officer Joshua Blackburn, charged with stealing $1 million worth of cocaine being held as evidence, has had his arraignment postponed at his lawyer's request until early next month, KTLA is reporting.

During the go-go, greed is good ‘80s, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and host Robin Leach became the symbol of American opulence. It was hard not to aspire for 'champagne wishes and caviar dreams.' Of course these days, there are countless shows featuring the upper crust flaunting their wealth. And like a car wreck, we wretch at the sight of such blatant materialism while secretly keeping our eyes glued to the TV set. So...

Ducks 4, Blue Jackets 3, OT - The Ducks managed to kill 7-of-9 power plays and converted three of their own to take down Columbus in overtime. Samuel Pahlsson scored for the OC boys on a penalty shot. Anaheim has won three of their last four and moved into a three-way tie for fourth in the Western Conference, just two points behind second place Dallas, who leads the Pacific Division. Kings 4, Canucks 2 -...

I almost didn’t go to see Ann Summa’s Los Angeles punk photo exhibition at Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica. No offense to the once, raw obscure photographers who happened to be at the right place at the right time 30 years ago, snapping amazing images of once, raw obscure bands. Your recognition is well past due. It’s just that there’s been a plethora of punk picture/art/flyer/book exhibitions in the past few years and I’ve seen most of them and on the night in question, I was running late from an earlier art opening and thought, “maybe I’ll just skip this one.” Thankfully, I came to my senses and hauled my lazy ass over to Bergamot Station. On the way in, I was greeted by the nostalgic sight of a drunk-off-her-butt teenager being half carried through the parking lot by friends. I took it as a sign from the gods of punk rock.
