Tonight Anaheim-based ska-infused pop outfit No Doubt will be headlining the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater with Santa Barbara-bred pop singer-songwriter Katy Perry and Swedish new wave rockers the Sounds in tow. British indie pop duo the Ting Tings (LAist Review) will be performing at Club Nokia with Seattle-based electro pop outfit Natalie Portman's Shaved Head (LAist Review). And, lastly, Swedish chanteuse Lykke Li (LAist Review, #2, #3) is poised to grace the Wiltern with local indie rockers the Deadly Syndrome (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Raleigh-based nu-folk trio Bowerbirds. Raleigh-via-Eau Clair trio Megafaun are slated to kick things off.

                     

For several shows at The Gibson Amphitheater, No Doubt played their fans favorite songs. The massive collection of instruments, white costumes with pops of black on a white geometric stage, and giant video screen of colorful imagery and films of Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, Adrian Young, Stephen Bradley, and Gabrial McNair added to the celebration.

But we strongly suggest heading over to Amoeba Music to catch Los Angeles' own "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Culver City-based DJ/selector DâM-FunK, who will be kicking off the first day of the month-long series Stones Throw Sundays.

And, lastly, local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) will be performing at the Echoplex with Deerhoof (LAist Review). But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-based indie rockers Stellastarr. LAist favorites, Michigan's own Mason Proper and New Hampshire's own Wild Light (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

Pencil This In: Watchmen Director's Cut on the Big Screen, No Doubt's Return

For all those still reminiscing about their glory years in high school, a la Al Bundy, or perhaps just looking for an interesting take on the phenomena, head down to the The Secret Rose Theatre in North Hollywood. 40 is the New 15 opens tonight for a six week run ending on August 27th. The play follows the lives of a cross section of fortysomethings reflecting on their high school days and the goals they hoped to accomplish by the time they hit forty. Based on the life of writer Larry Todd Johnson, it follows the lives of an aspiring neurosurgeon, computer geek, gymnast, die hard baseball fan and musical aficionado. Shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays only, at 8:30 PM.

But we strongly suggest heading over to the Airliner in Lincoln Heights to catch local electronic mastermind Daedelus, who will be performing for this week's edition of Low End Theory. Athens-based avant-gardists Of Montreal will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl with none other than LA-based Cambodian rock outfit Dengue Fever. English alternative rockers Elbow are poised to take on the Wiltern with local indie rockers Mellowdrone and Manchester-by-way-of-LA singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop (LAist Interview, Reviews). And, lastly, London-based electro-pop duo La Roux will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour.

Summer has passed and acts such as Suzanne Vega, Tegan and Sara, M.I.A., Spoon, and Rilo Kiley have reclaimed the spotlight after significant hiatuses, but the year is far from over. It’s now time to look forward to albums on the horizon that look like winners already:

American Idol was only an hour and seven minutes tonight, which we think meant shorter songs clips and shorter packaged coaching segments with guest judge Gwen Stefani. And the shorter show was just fine with us because (1) most of these “Top 10” singers are good -- but they’re not great; (2) while the song choices were better than last week’s British Invasion, they were ripped right from the Adult Contemporary radio station playlists...

Like a presidential election, the information is trickling into the newsroom... Earlier today Andy let everyone know who most of the confirmed artists would be for this year's Coachella. Now we let you know who is playing on what days, etc. April 27 - Björk / Interpol / the Jesus and Mary Chain / Arctic Monkeys / Jarvis Cocker / Sonic Youth / Faithless / DJ Shadow / Peeping Tom / Brazilian Girls / Peaches...

could no doubt or gwen stefani play Coachella As some of you may have noticed, I'm new to the LAist family. I love music and I am happy to provide music listings several times a week.

Now that the weather is more normal we can go back to enjoying the fact that we live in LA and do Southern Californian things like skating, surfing, and editing movies on our Macs.

LA.Com and Venice Cantina are hosting a benefit for Surfer's Healing tomorrow evening from 7-10 PM. Surfer's Healing is a charity surf camp for austistic children. The benefit will feature performances by Sugar Ray (including Extra's own Mark McGrath) and Donovan Frankenreiter. There will be an auction (which actually has stuff people might want like a signed surfboard from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a guitar signed by the members of No Doubt), margaritas, and surprise celebrity guests.

Is it just us or are the 47th Grammy Awards Nominations woefully lacking in Los Angeles based artists and bands? Oh sure, the Black Eyed Peas and No Doubt make a few appearances and Snoop Dogg's Neptunes produced "Drop It Like It's Hot" rightfully competes for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group but these are all the usual suspects.
