Don't let their 1990's looking website fool you, their season opener next Sunday night has a program of promising music. It may seem weird that the Santa Monica Symphony is playing Edward Elgar's "Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1", usually heard at graduations, but the light piece is actually enjoyable when it's not played for a hour straight while large graduating classes walk down the aisle (that's how long the orchestra had to play...
For the past 16 years, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience, they have been presenting free neighborhood concerts in the community at churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California. The series for this year begins this week in San Gabriel. The Latin-flavored program includes Bizet’s Suite No. 1 from Carmen; Falla’s Suite from El amor brujo; Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No....
For the second year in a row UC Santa Barbara was ranked the 10th Best Party School by the Princeton Review. In their newly released 2008 edition of The Best 366 Colleges, the university 90 minutes north of LA was the only California school to make the Top 10. The top ranked party school this year was West Virginia University, a school that has made the list seven times in the past 15 years....
Did you know that the Philippines' No. 1 fast food chain was here in Los Angeles? Well, it is. And with inventive flavor-concoctions and the best named foods around (Yumburger, Chickenjoy) what Jollibee lacks in nutritional value it makes up for in wow-factor. And grease-factor. And indigestion. Beyond the jump, behold the wonders of Jollibee... Jollibee 3821 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90041 (323) 906-8617...

Rosie O' Donnell learned a hard lesson this week: Don't mess with the cute, ultra-conservative on The View. There's a reason why Elisabeth Hasselback was a Survivor finalist. She may look all prim, proper and meek, but say anything bad about her bf George W, and she's probably temped to take your eyes out with toothpicks and have them as hors d'oeuvres. Donald Trump be damned--Rosie O'Donnell finally met her match.
An article in the New York Times yesterday says that March is the No. 1 month for distracted workers. Hmm. Really? Though we think holiday Internet shopping in December comes in at a pretty close second, nothing says "blow off work" better than March Madness: Lost productivity from March Madness could cost companies more than $1.2 billion, the consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimates. But according to a survey, most companies do not...

It's always fascinating when old media attacks new media, and today's example takes on yours truly, LAist. In a piece about Best Of lists on websites, the New York Times leads with this oddity: "As any media consumer knows, this is the season of the list." First of all, in this, the era of YouTube and TiVo and 54 million blogs, is there really such a thing as a "media consumer"? Isn't everyone a...
I still want a hula hoop. But I'll settle for a sweet stash of new music and reissues. Here are the newbies for this festive holiday week. [via All Music]
It just occured to us that we like the new Paris Hilton single “Stars Are Blind” (Heiress Records/WB) better than the entire new Pearl Jam record cleverly titled "Pearl Jam" (J-Records).
First things first, Buckcherry will be playing a free concert tonight for the Jimmy Kimmel Show at the outdoor stage behind Hollywood High. And yes, the strippers from the "Sexy Bitch" video will be on stage with them.

TUESDAY
Armageddon must be around the corner. We blame Hollywood. It created the hype around this this whole teen singer-actor-dancer genre. If you can call it that. And now one of Disney's former child stars, Hilary Duff, who's like 17 and eleven-twelveths, has earned her second No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
Much like the NFL Draft, this is a weak class at the top, led by University of Utah player. Andrew Bogut will probably be a solid NBA center, ala Vlade Divac, but that's not the kind of franchise-changing player you hope to get at No. 1.
He may no longer be a Laker, but Derek Fisher's shot with 0.4 seconds left against San Antonio was the best thing to happen to LA sports fans all year. With every Laker annoying the hell out of the city of LA, from Shaq to Kobe to Malone to the Glove to Phil to Jerry Buss to Jeannie Buss, it was always nice to know that D-Fish was around. Sure, he couldn't defend to save his life. And he probably did take too many threes. But Derek Fisher was a consummate professional who was finally rewarded for years of hard work and humility.
We've stated before that it's a little odd that the Dodgers couldn't pony up $2 million more a year to get Adrian Beltre instead of Drew. In reality, after losing Beltre, the Dodgers became desperate for some form of offense and probably felt compelled to overpay for the Boras-represented Drew.
Michael T. Jarvis writes "The Central Library in downtown Los Angeles is home to 2.2 million volumes, including books, maps, CDs, DVDs and prints... We checked out some book lovers for a quick read on the library.
Melcher provided the template for the Angeleno archtype: the Celebrity Scion who thrived behind the scenes of the entertainment world and made a lasting impact on popular culure. Melcher worked on several projects with his mother, actress and singer Doris Day.
Tired of politics? You'd better get your second wind because local politicos descended on City Hall Monday to file the paperwork for the city wide election on March 8th.
