ScientIST Resolution: Eating Healthy A to Z

The holidays are over, the merriment has ceased, and that means that reality now rears its ugly head. It's time to make resolutions to be better this year than we were last year, or any other year, or ever will be in the future. For a lot of us, this means promises to get healthy. Well, LAist believes in you, and so for the month of January, we'll be running articles on health, wellness, and fitness to help make sure those promises aren't empty. Good luck, and godspeed. - Health Editor, Jessica Pauline

New Years Resolutions - The Tale of Two Parties

On New Year's Eve I found myself in the fortunate position of being invited to two parties. One was being held at the swanky Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, well known playground of the rich and famous. The other had an Old Hollywood theme and was thrown at the ancient Vogue Theater, which is no longer a theater but remains an icon (and is rumored to be one of the most haunted places in Hollywood.) The two soirees were four blocks from each other on Hollywood Blvd, but the price of admission cost ten times more at one than the other.

LAist Staff New Year's Resolutions: 2008 Can Suck It!

The new year marks an official "do-over" in the collective consciousness of the world. It's a time to realize our shortcomings, assess our weaknesses, and take stock of the glaring absences (or over indulgences) in our life that need tending. In short, the new year provides us with a clean slate to do more and be more, with 365 fresh and exciting chances stretched out before us. In case you haven't given much thought to how you're going to do it different in 2009, we at LAist are putting forth our personal resolutions as a gentle reminder to take some stock and make some change. This year is totally going to kick 2008's ass.

I’ve never been one for New Year’s Resolutions – it just seems like paving the way to letting myself down sometime mid-February. Besides, if I can’t stick to something in, say, June, why would I be able to stick to it in January?

I didn't want to just do a "best of" list. So this year, I've decided to take a years worth of personal New Year's Resolutions, ask around for those of friends and put a call out to readers (email me here) about things you've always wanted to know, always wanted to do and then take those requests and ask an expert, an insider to help out. The result? Here goes...

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. People want to lose weight this year, get in better shape, look good naked, blah, blah, blah, blah. Does it actually happen? Sure, some do. But most? We all know that reality.

LAist has polled a number of our favorite LA locals to find out their New Year's Resolutions! In the spirit of fairness, here is mine: I'm cutting up the credit cards! Let's see what everyone else has to say:

Holidays have you indulging a little more than usual? Just in time for those New Year resolutions and post-holiday diets, the Wii Fit is expected to be released in North America in January. Released earlier this month in Japan, Wii Fit sold over a quarter million units in the first week. The game was designed for families to exercise with activities like stretching, yoga, step aerobics, push ups, jogging and much more. The additional system to the Wii console uses a pressure-sensitive platform called the Balance Board which players stand on, hop or press against. The platform can measure an individual's weight, body mass index and tracks the information to show your results over time. The Nintendo site states that activities focus more towards working out the "core," emphasizing slower, controlled motions.

In case you missed the banners on every major street in town and the commercials on KNBC, it's time for the LA Marathon. Even if your idea of a workout is walking to the TV when the batteries in your remote die, this event is likely to have an impact on your life. About 26,000 runners will pound 26.2 miles of pavement on Sunday morning. That's right, 26.2 miles of street closures for just the...

If you're bummed out today, you're not alone. If you're pissed, despondent, low, blue, mournful, depressed, dejected, or "in the bell jar", take solace. If you feel gloomy or downcast or spiritless or mopey or dopey or down, there's good reasons to frown, Christmas is super far away, our New Year's resolutions have probably already gone to shit, the weather sucks, and it's time for us to start thinking about bills and taxes, This...

I have decided to take a new approach to writing film reviews in 2007. No more feeling obligated to see and write about Important Hollywood Crap. C'mon, are there actually any LAist readers who care about that shit? I figure if people want to read that stuff they can open the LA Times or the Weekly and read film reviews by someone who probably cares about things like oeuvres and mise en scène and didn't...

7. Get our collective asses in shape! - As written in earlier posts, it looks like We're getting a little tubby over here at LAist. How are we supposed to live in this superficial town when we're a little soft on the edges? 6. Find the treasure underneath City Hall! Thanks for the tip LACityNerd! That being said, I need to buy a pickaxe. 5. 1920x1200 - Jokes for nerds! 4. Visit the Valley...

Just a few days left for making those New Years resolutions, and of course number one on my list is predictably to get healthy. Each year I try some new fangled diet I either read about in a magazine or watched someone talk about on Oprah, and '07 aint going to be any different people. This year I'm going to try to go the holistic, all natural approach. I’ve always considered myself a “clean...
