Gay Marriage Legalized in New Hampshire

Is New England the new California? New Hampshire became the sixth state, the fifth in New England, to legalize gay marriage today. After months of back and forth revisions, the legislature approved it this morning following by Governor John Lynch approval this afternoon when he signed it into law.

New Hampshire State House Approves Gay Marriage

As California awaits the state Supreme Court's decision on Prop 8's validity, New Hampshire's state house approved gay marriage today in a narrow vote. Since last year, civil unions for gays has been on the books in that state, but if today's bill passes through the state senate and other formal procedures, civil unions would be considered marriage under state law only as federal does not recognize same-sex marriage.

From New Hampshire to South Carolina, Democratic poll workers are noticing a trend grounded in passion and a thirst for new executive direction: record turnout.

The results from the Nevada Caucus are in and all the major news organizations have crowned Hillary Clinton the winner, with 51 percent of the vote. This marks the second win in a row for Clinton, who teared herself to a New Hampshire primary victory last week and hopes to ride this wave of momentum to next Saturday's South Carolina primary.

As the results of today's caucuses--including one being held at Caesar's Palace--in Nevada continue to stream in, most are projecting Senator Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney the winners of the Democratic and Republican races, respectively.

Mitt Romney is the consummate, cookie-cutter, robot-like Republican. Forget about eliciting animation or human emotion from this wanna-be prez. Even his campaign henchmen lack the ability to opine on, well, just about anything, as evidenced below.

We always encourage you to press that little recommend button at the bottom right hand corner of every post if you enjoyed it. For one, it tells us what you want more of here it LAist. So here's this week's five most recommended posts, as recommended by you:

Fresh off her New Hampshire Primary win Tuesday night, Democratic presidential candidate and New York Senator Hillary Clinton will be in Los Angeles today stumping for votes in anticipation of California's Feb. 5 Primary.

We've been hot on the trail of friend-of-LAist Jacob Soboroff and his Why Tuesday? voting-system reform initiative and 2008 campaign coverage. This morning he sent in an interview with our very own Secretary of State Debra Bowen, who was in New Hampshire yesterday to check out the efficiency of that state's No. 2 pencil-driven computerized voting systems.

If you still wondering how the process looks and why it feels different from the primaries that the rest of the country partake in, watch this video after the jump from Why Tuesday to help fill in those missing pieces.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, one of Hillary Clinton's national campaign chairs, is returning to Iowa to campaign for her, the Daily News reports. It is caucus day, so there's not much campaigning left to do.

Somehow "The Tonight Show" scored a trifecta of controversy tonight as they were able to book the most punk rock of punk rock bands, the most conservative member of Congress, and the wackiest Scientologist all to appear on its air in the same hour. Tonight the Sex Pistols, Ron Paul, and Tom Cruise will all be in Burbank to tape the late night chat show. Strangely, whatever wire service the LA Daily News used...

Those of you who've been following the presidential race as closely as I have (and, really, who hasn't?) are no doubt aware of the conventional wisdom surrounding Hillary Clinton's candidacy – namely that she now appears unbeatable. Pundits and reporters alike have been buzzing about her insurmountable lead – often clocking in in the high double digits – over her next two closest rivals, Obama and Edwards, for what has seemingly been weeks now....

Texas congressman Ron Paul pointed his pen at his fellow conservatives at the New Hampshire presidential debates yesterday and won the Fox News text message poll, a day after winning the Maryland Republican Straw Vote, to the outrage of Fox mouthpiece, Sean Hannity. Hannity, who clearly hates freedom and obviously believes that all elections and polls that aren't rigged by Karl Rove must be rigged, flat out accused the American people of cheating when...

As just the latest of high-profile California lawmakers to endorse her presidential bid, Senator Dianne Feinstein should add a bit more West Coast mojo to Hillary Clinton's already momentous campaign. The latest poll figures have her up 49% to 24% over Barack Obama in California, and she is leading the field in most other early primary states — though not in the fund-raising department, where Obama is kicking some serious tush. Her latest California...

John Vanderslice is playing tomorrow night at the Largo. St. Vincent, who we interviewed this morning, is opening for him. It's sold out and even the scalpers are all, sucks to be you. They were both really funny and very smart. Of the two, Mr. Vanderslice seemed to enjoy answering the questions while Ms. Vincent seemed to enjoy eluding them in witty ways. Vanderslice was originally in the band mk Ultra, had an infamous...

Laura Silverman, the delightful co-star of The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central and sister of comic Sarah, answers questions about Jews in New Hampshire, Jimmy Kimmel, and being a bad-ass. How is working with your sister on a daily basis? Do you ever have to call each other on diva like behavior? Well, I can't really call her on it, cause technically she's my boss. It's totally fun, we get along really well in...

Everyone's favorite inappropriate Jewess next door, Sarah Silverman, now has her own TV show on Comedy Central, aptly titled The Sarah Silverman Program. This makes people like me, who have been fans since her one year featured player gig on SNL in the early nineties, extremely happy. Or giddy. Or joyous. Whatever. But even if you're new to the world of SS, it's still really funny, like I watched it completely sober but thought...

Sorry, Chicagoist, and transplanted Bears fans, most of the country believes that the Colts will win the Super Bowl on Sunday. According to a poll at ESPN, every state except one would put their money on Indianapolis and their slick offense over the dominating (yet inconsistant) defense and explosive special teams. With over 340,000 votes tallied, 68% of ESPN.com readers believe that Peyton Manning's team will win. 73% of Californian voters would bet Colts,...

Mayor Villaraigosa, joined by Councilmember Herb Wesson and South Korean Consul General Choi, will celebrate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the partnership between the City of Los Angeles and the Republic of Korea for the Superblock project.

I know it's a bit late in the game, but tonight's the last night The War Tapes will be playing at the Nuart theater in West L.A. Of the recent spate of Iraqi war documentaries, The War Tapes is one of the best. In what may be the most documented war in history, filmmaker Deborah Scranton took the concept of embedded to a whole new level by giving the means of production to the...

When a horse is born it doesn't start off pretty. There's slime and ugliness and voilence and hooves and nothing seems natural, and then there's the little horse and then he wobbles to stand and then he's standing and then he's walking and then before you know it he's a beautiful horse. Hi, baby.

Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron) turns 25 today. She's doing both artsy and big-budget stuff; soon she'll be in both As You Like It and Spiderman III.

In the small space that is the Theatre of NOTE, catty corner to Amoeba Records in Hollywood, the current show explores humanity through a bastard of a character who gains our sorrow as he traverses life full of opportunities not belonging to him. In this dark and deadpan world, where no serendipity can exist, love and forgiveness can be still found.

Carolyn Kellogg has been the editor of LAist for just about a month. She's been writing for the site for much longer than that. At the same time, she hosts Pinky's Paperhaus but we'll get into that later. She explains her professional past as a "former music journalist turned web producer". We'd describe her as energetic, intelligent, invested, excited and colorful.
