Congratulations to LAist Reader Brian Flanagan

Last night's victory for North Carolina over Michigan State not only brought the Tarheels their fifth national championship in school history but it also gave one lucky LAist reader an XBOX 360 Elite. Brian Flanagan, also known as "Brifdog," and his "Brif Defeats LAist 09" bracket racked up a total of 148 points to beat out the field of LAist readers and staff members. Congratulations Brian and thanks to everyone for playing. Also, thanks to the good people at Microsoft for hooking us up with a very sweet prize.

It All Comes Down to This

Not only will a national champion will be determined tonight in Detroit when North Carolina and Michigan State square off in the final of a very uneventful NCAA tournament, but we'll also have a winner in the LAist bracket contest. Going into tonight's action, we have a tie between "JK's Picks" and "Bracketology" but neither of those brackets has either the Tarheels or Spartans winning it all. In third place, we have "Brif Defeats LAist 09." If Ty Lawson and company prevail tonight, Brif just might do as the name suggests and defeat all of the LAist readers who participated. We'll just have to wait and see. The winner will receive an XBOX 360 Elite System thanks to our friends at Microsoft. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

Do You Think the NCAA Tournament has been Boring?

With very few upsets and surprises, this year's installment of March Madness has been short on madness. The top three seeds in each bracket have all marched into the Sweet 16, making this weekend's games a battle of college basketball heavyweights. That's not what makes this time of year of magical though, it's the double-digit seeds knocking off a top dog and making a run. The only double-digit seed remaining is also the lone Pac-10 team, Arizona. Does the lack of a Cinderella story have you bored with the tourney? The San Francisco Chronicle's Ray Ratto is. The LAist bracket contest, however, is wide open. The bracket named "Johnny Bag of Donuts" is currently in the lead, but things are close. Winner gets an XBOX 360 Elite System provided by our friends at Microsoft.

How's Your Bracket So Far?

Day two of the NCAA tournament is underway. Yesterday offered little in the upset department, and not much as far as excitement goes besides UCLA's escape from VCU and local underdog CSUN's scare of Memphis. Today, Louisville, the top seed in the entire tournament and the most popular pick in the LAist bracket to win it all, takes the court against 21.5 point underdog Morehead St. Speaking of the LAist group, as promised, we've got a prize. The winner of the LAist group will take home an XBOX 360 Elite System thanks to the good people at Microsoft. Also on tap for today, red hot USC takes on Boston College at 4:20.

Am I smarter than a 9 1/2-year-old?

Her name is Reason and she is not quite 10 years old. In fact, if you ask her, she'll tell you she is 9-and-a-half, which bodes well for her ability to keep a close tab on important numbers. But that is not why I asked her to fill out my NCAA brackets this year. Each and every year, we are subject to endless debate about who will win, who should win and who who has no chance. This year, I decided to forgo usual strategy that included years of picks based on advice from so-called experts and go with someone whose lack of college basketball wisdom rivals only her fondness for recess.
